In Canada we've always called them "tar sands". The recent trend of calling them "oil sands" is re-branding BS. The French term is the most accurate: they are called "sables bitumineux", which means "bituminous sands", as the natural state of the hydrocarbon is neither tar nor oil but rather bitumen (the stuff used to glue asphalt together).
It's unbelievable that there's no mention of Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors. Molten salt reactors could help solve the problems being discussed. Originally built in the US and now being developed in China.
