certo che in una grande opera come questa Bergonzi non e' eccezionale....ognuno ha un modo diverso di ascoltare, ma leggo pure su Bonisolli, lodato un po troppo in quanto mi sembra molto scarso.......voce debole. Provate a confrontarla col grande Placido Domingo......non ci sono paragoni, la padronanza di voce, il do di petto di Domingo sono insuperabili, forse l'unico che poteva tenergli testa era Alfredo Kraus, oltretutto dotato di una dizione perfetta.

La Tosca della callas datata 1964 ( Londra ) di cui abbiamo solo il secondo atto , è di un livello altissimo nonostante , come dici tu qualche nota non bella. ( ero troppo giovane ) . I problemi per il registro acuto della Callas nascono tutti con la Norma di Parigi (1965 ) dove per un'indisposizione di G.Simonato il ruolo di Adalgisa venne affidato alla giovane F.Cossotto , la quale per imporsi e mettersi in evidenza mise in difficoltà la Callas con acuti tenuti scatenando l'ira di Zefirelli

Carissimo , il registo acuto di Bergonzi ha avuto grosse difficoltà dagli anni 70 in poi. L'età e la provenienza dal registro baritonale hanno avuto sicuramente la loro valenza.Vorrei però ricordare che l'ottava alta di Carreras è sempre stata incerta ( questo gia prima della malattia ) ma questo non toglie che il buon Josè non fosse un grande cantante. ( io li ho sentitti tutti dal vivo e mi baso su questo e non su i dischi ).

Io giudico un opera intera non spezzoni ..... e infatti quella Tosca fu buona.Ma ricordati che Bergonzi aveva 3 volte il volume di Pavarotti e lui e Caballè erano gli unici che si sentivano al di fuori dell'arena di Verona.

Love Pav but would rather hear Bergonzi any time, such character in his voice. All three did fabulously well. I like when you have such well schooled singers that you can see and hear what they are doing technically with their voices. For all three, you are able to see and hear many lines where they produce the voice without complete and pronounced movement of the outer mouth. In this, they create the voice first and sustain it and then place the syllables into this established vocal line. GOLD

Even at this time, Carlo Bergonzi was in better health than LP who was 11 years his Junior. Of course, LP did not even make it to age 72 while Carlo Bergonzi is still very much with us at age 85.

To EPLV2: this may have been left out of the cd but it is on the 4 hour DVD. What is remarkable here is not only Bergonzi in his 70's, but June Anderson's power and beauty and Furlanetto's class and wonderful voice.

This and the sextet from L'Italiana en Algeri were the two best received pieces of the day and night programs. Pavarotti did show up for the evening program.

My only hope is that, if he was substituting for Pavarotti, he was paid what Pavarotti would get.

His phrasing, his use of language are peerless in my book. But what makes his voice so distinctive for me is its virility. Many tenors sound like instruments. Bergonzi sounds like a man.

Lots of singers have performed into their seventies (Cuénod, Sénéchal) but Bergonzi had them beat for the enduring vibrancy of his voice.

Hear, hear. I've always thought Bergonzi's voice has a uniquely sensual quality and at at times, almost even erotic.

Check out the early '50s recording of him and Renata Tebaldi singing "Butterfly". When Pinkerton and Butterfly are singing the famous aria at the end of Act I, the listener does not have to know Italian to understand that Pinkerton's trying to get this young woman to follow him to bed! Bergonzi's voice conveys every nuance of the seduction.

I'm always so amazed at Verdi's music in I Lombardi! I don't understand why this opera isn't as famous as others by the Italian master. Bergonzi is just incredible, the voice is exactly the same, though with much more vibrato and a less refined and flexible legato. But he's amazing for any age! Anderson and Furlanetto are also remarkable performers.

Luciano cancelled at the last minute because he did not learn the score a common thing for Dear Luciano sending the Met into cahos finding a substitubte tenor at the last minute.Begornzi as a true musician and a great artist came foward,still singing well despite his age.Perhaps Signor Pavarotti should learn from him.
