Beautiful music - understatement! Savaal is the supreme master of this difficult to play instrument. The best recording I know of where Casals plays this himself, is at the 1961 historic concert he gave at the White House before President Kennedy. He also played it in the Cinerama film "Windjammer" for the crew of the training vessel Christian Radich. Cheers.
Than you Emmarosecarrte, your recomendation is wonderful. ALEJANDRO ALDONZA it´s a magic singer, not only singing this song but all of his vocal performances...
wonderful interpretation, if you want to ear a incredible voice version of this song, look for Alejandro Aldonza el cant dells ocells.. he is out standing and beautiful to... jajaja

subbass, you are right in saying that the cello and the viol are related, but one is not the direct descendant of the other. The Viol actually is an offshoot of the guitar and lute family. The cello was first made a bass version of the violin, like you said, and it was not until the baroque period that we see an instrument resembling a present day cello.
Hello, thank you for posting this. What a wonderful human being to grace us with such an astounding amount of the very best music.
I'm sorry to trouble you, but my only language is English and a very poquito bit of Spanish. Can anyone translate the text of what is said in the interview? I would be grateful beyond imagination. THANK YOU kind soul.
The language is Catalan, not Spanish. I assume 'el cant des ocells" means "the song of the birds", as "il canto degli ucelli" would in Italian. Fakkirr775's comment means, if I'm not mistaken: "The 'song of the birds' is much more than a song for the Catalan people. Rather, for us, it is a breath of the freedom we have lost as a nation and as a land, it is in word love for Catalonia, it is a wisdom which enslaves itself in the heart every time we hear it."
@ironlungs33 Hi! They talk about the origins of the song (the words originally praise Jesus' birth, and then they were used in politics by the Austrias when they were trying to get our throne) and about the melody, how rooted this song is in our tradition, and how beautiful it is. They say that this kind of melody, so melancholic and even sad can make you FEEL even more than a happy song, and this is because it mixes a feeling of sensuality and spirituality in it. Hope it helped!! hehe :)
@ironlungs33 It’s normal that you can’t understand this because he speak Catalan not Spanish, Jordi Savall is a musician Catalan like Pau Casals (the music who re-popularized “El cant dels ocells” in English “the song of the birds). In the interview, he is talking about uncertainty of the song as this song have a lots of centuries, originally it was a Christmas song (the birds “els ocells” contribute to worship and to held the birth of Jesus)
and we don’t know who was the author. In the succession war (1705-1714) the Catalans wanted as a king to the the Archduke Charles of Austria, and in that time the song ( a part of its lyrics, changing the letter) was used to praise the Archduke.
He is going on talking about how these melodies that have very clear roots with traditions that go far; the emotion of tenderness, the emotion of melancholy, the sadness … and these feelings and make people enjoy, sometimes more than cheerful songs, because to estimate with those emotions are appreciated with an intensity sensual, aesthetic and spiritual.
I hope to be able to help you and sorry for my English is not very good.
Well, to be exact is a "viola da gamba", the ancestor of cello; has more strings, and a part of the keyboard is fretted. Also dimensions are a bit different.
The Cello and the Gamba have NOTHING in common!Goddamn can't you figure out that one belongs to the fretted family, and the other to the violin family?
Before the Cello was played on a spike,it was smaller and was played with a strap around the body,so held in the air?
I'm really despaired to read such retarded retorts such as"ancestor of".Name the Gamba "cousin"if you want,as they (Cello and Gamba)developed in parallel at the same time but belong to 2 DIFFERENT categories.
Ok, thanks for the lesson, mine was perhaps a simplification... is a matter of points of view... If you prefer i say cousin i say cousin. Is what i meant to be. I know the differences you told, it was no necessary to say it again. But thanks for explaination. Don't write only to me, write to the others too so they can learn.
looks like this foul-mouth is cousin to a jerk, aka, a pill. Unnecessary truculance is verbal flatulance. You can educate less offensively. We all love the music. You know the phrase that includes, 'sounding brass'?
The language is Catalan; the song is a Christmas Carol, which became something of an unofficial Catalan national anthem when Pablo (Pau) Casals used to perform it at the end of his concerts in exile.
Yesm that is the name of this piece.. you can find it in the c.d "Du temps et de l'instant", in Savall's record label.. you can buy the whole c.d, is absolutely beautiful.

No. The cello was developed independently from the Viola da gamba. They even coexisted. But not related.
