means 'test of courage by burning skin with cigarette' according to my dictionary.

Konjou means will-power, guts, courage, temper, nature or spirit.

Yaki is used at the end of food names like Teriyaki.

The Japanese actually have a very decent understanding of the nobility of self mutilation. The language barrier just prevented it from being articulated as well as it might have been. The interviewer (male) had a genuine interest in the psychology of Richey's tendencies.

At 2:38 he says"watashi wa samishi kanashii boy desu" which means "I am a lonely sad boy".

And then he says "konjuyaki" which probably means "scars".

Normally you'll learn introducing yourself first but he tried to learn how to express his pains first....It seems...

Thanks about explaining what the phrase Richey uses means. Apparently konjou-yaki means burning cigarettes on skin to show that you have guts. Konjou means guts or courage so I guess the interviewer is asking him if he has any guts (pretty tactless thing to ask imo, besides, I think it's obvious that he has it).

@Meggy. if you think Richey looks happy in this interview, you should check out the interview i have with him and Nicky playing put-put (miniture golf). IMO, it's the one interview where he looks and acts truly happy. it's very adorable. check it out if you haven't yet, it's not to be missed :) it's my favorite interview with Richey in it!

This interview is actually from late 1993.

He says at the end: "Hai. Er, give thanks and praises to the most high. Love, Richey."

I like this interview, but you can tell that Richey was having back pain during it. The lady in this one is also in the 'Manic Street Preachers Arrival in Sapporo 1993' video.

I wish I could tell you what Richey says at the end, but I have a hard time making out exactly what he is saying too. But if I do figure it out, I'll post about it here.

Heart-breaking to see Richey here it seems to be the beginning of his downfall.He complains about his back, has lost weight, chain-smoking, as for his arm - speaks for itself. So sad.

@RimmelLipstickLover - i know what you mean about Richey. well, i think he got a lot worse towards THB, but if you watch interviews he was in during GT, you can see the change in him in just the short amount of time between that and GATS. Richey actually seemed happy & playful at times during GT. it is sad he slipped away so fast, but hopefully he's in a better place now. i personally think & believe he is.

Hi again Rimmel. Yes this interview was from around 1994. I too find it sad that Richey's fans will never get to see him again, but I believe he is better off & happier where ever he is. I think he was a very sensitive person. Not weak, but just sensitive & think it was hard for him to be in the Manics. If he did come back, all the attention he would get would be 1000 times worse, so I believe he is better off where is is & to remain there. But I agree, it is hard to make sense of it all.

Since he explained it's Konjo-yaki. Konjo-yaki is what many young kids do to show off they have guts to fight. (Konjo means guts) I think interviewers did not realize another meaning, that he was doing it by self destruction.

i wish i knew what Richey says @ 2:34 too. maybe someone who knows Japanese can translate it. as far as them laughing at Richey's cuts & burns, i don't like the way they laugh at it either. but i think sometimes people react that way out of nervousness or being uncomfortable, rather than cruelty or mockery. esp. if it's something like self injury, which a lot of people don't understand & freak out about. well, just a guess. thanx 4 your comment theyarejustlizards & i like your user name too :)

yeah,i guess they just dont understand that some people hurt themselves when they feel bad. but its not only in this case-some british interviewers were even worse,for instance that rhona cameron..how could anybody let her so close to Richey
