while royce jones was touring with steely he was often the target of lynch threats from both denny and skunk, for the obvious reason of his race. the inclusion of a black man on tour had a lot to do with the eventual departures of both denny and skunk
@Exilemainstreet i read it in the book "ain't no mexican: the denny dias story", which was never published A) because of it's blatant racism and B) because denny, being a swamp-dweller from the deep south, is barely literate, and the text is almost unintelligable. it's been mostly passed down through oral tradition (as is common in the south). of course denny blames "the jews", and fagen and becker in particular for keeping "the truth" from the public. i know denny's cousin tom so i heard it all
@Exilemainstreet are you fucking kidding me? do you know who the fuck Denny Dias and Skunk are? If so then how the hell does that sound like bullshit? It's the truth
@Playjex THANK YOU. they had to tell denny and skunk that jones was a goddamn slave just so they wouldn't harass him, yet this guy is telling me i'm full of it
Got to see them twice in the same year. Long beach auditorium and then the Santa Monica Civic. Mc Donald, Jeff Poccarro, Jim Hoddar, . the originals. It was fantastic.
@crimsonrush It was percussionist Royce Jones. My wife and I saw their April '74 concert at The University of Toledo Fieldhouse and Royce also sang David Palmer's lead vocal on "Dirty Work." Since this was their last tour for nearly 20 years I always wondered why they never released a live concert album. Musically it's still the best concert I've ever attended.
@andyinoregon I had a ticket to see them in Liverpool a few days after this, but they cancelled on the night - never to play again with this line up. I was devastated.
@crimsonrush Damn, I'm devastated for you as well. I know so many Dan fans who never got to see the original lineup perform live, and those of us who did had no idea that we were seeing them for the last time in 1974. One year later I was watching Skunk Baxter and Michael McDonald playing with The Doobie Brothers at Bowling Green University. A great concert, but not Steely Dan great.
Apart from from negligible tape hiss, amazing sound for 70's live recording -nice bass response, everything can be heard clearly, highs not to muffled - listen to that snare snap; the cymbals ring, glorious harmonies, even more warmth than the studio recording -a gem!
Something about London...I have a recent show (2006) of Donald Fagan solo in London and it still blows my mind. I think I have this entire '74 concert on a bootleg.

Royce Jones does a great job on this. I wish I had a time machine, because I'd go back in time just the see the original Steely Dan band play live.
