It takes a dedicated person to create an aggressive pit. They may be naturally dog selective or maybe even dog aggressive, but many live wonderfully with other dogs, cats, etc. As far as how they are with humans, well it makes me laugh to think people are scared of these dogs. I personally think they are the friendliest breed out there. This is coming from a person who has owned goldens my entire life. (+one Newfoundland and one Shih-tzu).

@Saibrock: I am certified in dealing with dog behavior and am a constant student, I've also worked with many pit bulls coming in and out of the local shelter (none of which had an ounce of aggression except for some dog selectiveness). No- the "pit bull" breeds are not likely to become aggressive. In fact- it is just the opposite. It takes a lot of work or very selective breeding to create an aggressive pit bull. They are very tolerant, resiliant dogs that have a high threshold for pain.

The BREED was made that way. Ask any dog behavior expert, and they'll tell you that pit bulls are a breed that have a natural propensity toward aggression. The breed was originally designed to promote this kind of behavior, so it comes naturally to them (and yes, behavior is part of a breed). I wouldn't suggest that ALL pit bulls are dangerous and aggressive, but the breed is designed to lean that way.

It always talks about their extreme loyalty and strength. The the people that fight them will use their loyalty and turn it into aggression towards other dogs but no dog wants to be like that. I live in NY and I know just how sneaky some BSL can be. Dogs labeled "pitbulls" or "pit-mixes" aren't banned outright in NYC. Instead, they changed the law so that people living in public housing can only have one animal, and the pet has to be under 25 lbs. Since pits and other so-called "dangerous" breeds are 40+ lbs, it indirectly bans them from a lot of potential homes.

I groom dogs and the types of dogs that always give me the most problems are small breeds, chihuahuas, pomeranians, maltese, yorkies etc. I have been bitten many times by poms and chihuahuas. However, its not the breed it is the way they are raised. A properly socialized dog that is treated as a dog- not as human-never acts aggressively. I have groomed many "bully" breeds and to me, they are always the sweetest. Breed specific legislation is a huge blow to the rights of ALL dog owners.

This is an excellent video. I live in Ontario where Bryant's "BULLY" Ban is in effect and over 4 thousand family friendly pets with a certain look have been put down in 3 years. They are killing pups. Yesterday animal control stopped a guy walking his 4 month old boxer/mastiff pups and is threatening them with death if they are not removed from Ontario. It is a holocaust here and responsible dog owners are being made to pay for a few jerks. On has being a living nightmare for dog lovers.

There actually is a California law, SB 861, also known as the "Dangerous Dog Breed" legislation. (I've been trying to post this reply with the link but Youtube isn't letting me.) SB 861 authorizes any California town to remove from the dog population any breed of dog by allowing a town to require forced sterilization of any particular breed that they choose to target.

It may not be a "ban" but it's close.
