Man the same thing happened to my 99 Cobra. The previous owner of the car over tightend the spark plugs and the result of it was an "exhaust leak" sound. I didn't know this till the spark plug blew up in the motor and melted the coil. I helicoiled it and it fixed it but the explosion of the spark messed up my cylinder head. :( So I'm getting a replacement motor for the Snake! :D
@seppipimp If it is under warranty, you should get Ford to replace the heads. I had inserts put in the spark plug hole by mechanics (I do not know the brand of inserts they used) and when I sold it I disclosed this to the buyer.
I dont let any ford tech touch my truck.. They dont know shit.. they always fuck it up .. I work on my own vehicles.. I do everything myself.. I dont trust anyone. And i dont care of your the best tech in the world. you still aint touching my vehicle.
hey what i found actually is the reason 4 this is to be not tightening them enough they get loose and back out till they only grab a few threads and then they blow out ........ if u would had checked them all when the first blew u would have found a few that weren't tight ... ive seen this over and over ......... 3 valves r a diff story all together, he he they wont come out when u want them out!!!!!
@91mustangmike: I think you are correct. I think my problem was a combination of using Bosch spark plugs, the aluminum heads not having enough threads and this prevented them from tightening enough. I realize since I installed the plugs that I cannot get any money, I just want Ford to be held accountable if they had a bad design. If someone can prove it was not Ford's fault, I will be neutralized :).
@binayt ford is still having serious problems with these.. its not because they are getting loose. its because of VERY poor casting. they "attempted" to fix it, and looking at the new heads, it looks exactly the same, but now the plugs seize inside the head when trying to replace them, and then they still blow out. it seems to be worse on the trucks though... its pretty common in the trucks for them to blow in the first 10k miles...
@NeXtras ... WTF?? I use to have a KB/ built Lightning.. I torque speced my plugs and they never came out or anything...mine was 03.. yes the 99/02 Lightnings did have threads problems.. (4 threaded holes) .. the 03/04 Lightnings had (8 threaded holes)...
@LightningMAS if you modified the truck/car, Ford has the right to deny the warranty claim. Same goes for if ou do the work to the vehicle, because it was not carried out by a Ford certified tech
i love fords but when it comes to customer survice they blow donkey dick......bought a 05 f-250 with a bunch of exstras from the dealership (stage 2 turbo, stage two intake, stage two injectors, 5" exhaust, edge chip). started towing with it stretched the head bolts took it back in and they told me they wouldnt touch it cause of all the shit on it warrenty would not cover it. even after i was told countless times and saw it had been written up in the warrenty that the truck had all these parts.
@oilfield666 yea i do. the truck is set up as a hot hauler truck.. its ment to tow like a mother fucker. and ford new it when we bought it from them what we where going to do. and they said they would cover the truck under warrenty with all the shit on it. They also knew 05 ford 6.0 litter powerstroke will stretch head bolts.
@nakedchicksrock the reason u stretched the head bolts is because u were towing with the mods, egts were thru the roof. idiots these days dont even unsterstand how an engine works....jump in and go, drive her till she drops.
its obvious they didnt cover ur dumbass, and its not head bolts stretching, its idiots TOWING and not paying any attention.... egts getting too hot, boils antifreeze in EGR cooler that raises the pressure in coolant system. head gasket gets pushed out.
I'am in the process of going to trial with Ford Canada in B.C and would appreciate feedback from anybody has experianced this spark plug blow out problem.
Same thing happen to my 2002 mustang gt i bought a spark plug thread rapir kit from parts store comes with everything you need.... My car runs fine now.
WARNING: ALWAYS wait untill the car is COMPLETELY cold before attempting to replace the spark plugs. Also screw them in by hand at first and take it easy. You can watch my 3 videos on spark plug change on the mustangs, it is supposed to show all the steps involved. Also use the factory recommended spark plugs which are of the MOTORCRAFT brand. Better ones would be for boosted engines and whatever else that actually needs better plugs. Plus Motorcraft=like $3 a sparkplug.
I Just put a new steel insert in my 99 ford f-250 and it was a real pain in the ass but i am so glad i could do it with out pulling the motor or replacing the head
man my 2003 steeda did the same today and this is the 2nd time i mean wtf ford this is crazy now i cant get the spark plug back in it now i guess its stripped forreal now got to take it to the auto service place in the morning
Be careful if you use a heliocoil or insert on the 99 Cobra, there is a flare at the bottom of the plug hole and you need a special tool. What a design! But I am sure the ratio of smart/stupid engineers is > 1.

joshmarauder 5 months ago
@joshmarauder you have to get a new sleeve for the spark plug i believe timesert sells the cheapest, or buy new heads. either way its not cheap

Thats what you get for tightening them to damn tight and stripping the heads out.. Of course FORD wont pay for your fuckups.

Idiot... why would you file with the DOT? They make TSB's/SSM's for a reason... 10 bucks says you modded it too.
Lightnings had an issue with the #8 plug, normally blew if you chipped it.. so if we saw a P1000 your Warranty wont cover it

I had a VW beetle that blew out a spark plug while I was driving.
I got a new plug, carefully threaded it, put the tighten on it and it never blew out again.
I think someone had either cross threaded it or not tightened it properly.
By the way, isn't a super soft metal like aluminum just perfect for something that has to be removed and replaced many times?
They learned their lesson with Aluminum cylinders with no liners, I wonder why no steel liners for the spark plugs?
