Each episode of the DiC series were half-hour commercials. Most episodes introduced a new character or vehicle that had an accompanying toy. This episode is all about the ninja force toys. It's the only episode where slice and dice appear and they're referred to each others name.

No, it actually didn't exist in the sunbow series. Show me one moment where they portrayed Duke and Scarlett as a couple. A cobra-induced dream of Shipwreck's doesn't count. The fact is, the very original mini-series in itself disproves the oft mistated non-fact. I think it comes from the idea that the alpha-male and alpha female always end up together (like Flint and Lady Jaye).

@MrRobenson2009 Nothing about the Sunbow cartoon counts because it was an 80's cartoon that existed for no reason other than to sell airtime to advertisers to market toys, lunchboxes, breakfast cereals. Lots of 80's cartoons did foolish non-canon things. The Fantastic Four replaced the Human Torch with Herbie the robot. Does anyone consider replacing Mary Jane with a red-headed look-alike named Firestar in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends canon? Nope. Only Snake Eyes & Scarlett are canon.

@MrRobenson2009 No, it's not an opinion, it's CANON. Larry Hama created GI JOE from a previously unpublished story idea called Fury Force, and Hama stated in a letter to ComiCon that "Scarlett's heart belongs to Snake Eyes," period. Silly-ass 80'scartoons are not canocal, or else you'd still see Batman having Bat-Mite as a sidekick, or the Wonder Twins as part of the Justice Leage. You're not gonna win this battle.

He's right. The only female member of GI Joe that Duke actually kissed in the Sunbow cartoon was Covergirl. His relationship with Scarlett was mostly flirtatious, and she eventually got phased out after only 29 episodes, with Lady Jaye becoming the more prominent female character. You can't separate Scarlett and Snake Eyes without diminishing their characters. They have all the history, and carry the dramatic weight of the storyline. The comic books got it right and the cartoons got it wrong.

@MrRobenson2009 And the reason for Duke and Scarlett being a "pseudo" couple who never kissed at all in the cartoon was to suit the convenience of the animators who didn't want to work around Snake Eyes' muteness. Larry Hama wanted Snake Eyes and Scarlett's canon romance from the comics in the cartoon, but Sunbow thought it would be to difficult for them. Duke didn't even exist in the comics originally. He was a corporate-made character due to Hasbro's issues with Hawk's code name at the time.

@MrRobenson2009 Flint and Lady Jaye may have had to tone it down due to the limitations of animation at the time, but you saw them in much more obvious "couple" situations such as the 'Eau De Cobra' episode where they attended a social function as a couple. Notice how Scarlett was phased out of the show altogether by Season 2 in favor of Flint/Lady Jaye. Hama and Marvel wouldn't budge on Snake Eyes/Scarlett, and Sunbow had no backstory for her and Duke, so the dropped her for Lady Jaye.

@MrRobenson2009 And as for the "valid source" you ask for, look no further than Larry Hama himself. Hama has stated in interviews that Hasbro/Sunbow had issues with Hawk's code name being too "politically charged," and thought that Snake Eyes' inability to speak made it difficult for the animators to portray his romance with Scarlett in what was essentially a 30 min. cartoon made to sell toys to young boys. Why do you think Duke's presence in the comics was so limited? Hama never created him.

@MrRobenson2009 And Sunbow didn't "even the playing field," they rammed Duke down our throats. What need is there to even anything, and who said there is a playing field? If cartoonists decided to do that with Batman/Catwoman and have her hook up with Green Arrow instead, of have Mary Jane Watson fall in love with Daredevil and not Spider-Man, fans would cry bloody murder. Stop making excuses for Sunbow's laziness.

@MrRobenson2009 Some things change, others stay the same(Superman/Lois Lane). Fans were upset by Gwen Stacy's death to be sure, but her character's death due to her her storyline having nowhere left to go, and the cartoons certainly wouldn't pair her with Captain America or something silly like that. The fact is that Duke/Scarlett were implied, never fully realized, and she was phased out in season 2. Theirs was a union of convenience for Ron Friedman and Sunbow, nothing more.

Great point. I actually wrote that in as the original #3 and then took it out because it wasn't pointed out with anything particular about the episode and I didn't want some diehard Duke-lover starting anything over it ;)

I also originally posted how it was the second time they implied romance between Snake Eyes and Scarlett (the other being the original mini-series) and it was actually NEVER implied in any cartoon episode thet Scarlett had any affection for Duke besides the episode where Shipwreck was in the cobra-induced dreamworld. Duke in fact made out with another woman in front of Scarlett before and she had no problems with it.

That's right, the scene in "The Mass Device" where Snake Eyes sacrifices himself to save the team, and he and Scarlett touch palms while separated by a plexiglass wall. One of the two best moments in the miniseries, the other being when Snake Eyes shows up alive at headquarters and Scarlett throws herself into his arms!

GREENL3600 did a fantastic tribute vid for Issue # 21 "Silent Interlude" -- also known as the "silent" issue -- featuring Snake Eyes and Scarlett set to Jan Hammer's "Evan" score from Miami Vice.

I've seen it and it's nice. I always thought that a better soundtrack would be "Battle without honor or humanity". Everytime I hear that song I envision issue 21 for some strange reason.

@coldice33 Hey there! Actually, this isn't the Sunbow cartoon. That one only lasted two seasons and was cancelled in 1987. This is the DIC cartoon from the early 90's that picked up where Sunbow left off. Renegades is a lot better than this.
