In my opinion "World of Darkness" is best played without any of the Monster books, but rather as a Human in a darker reflection of our own world. I would not want to play or run a game with Monstrous PCs.
The Hunter books paint hunters as grossly stupid xenophobes with the emotional maturity of 13 year olds who can not comprehend human nature or cause and effect relationships.
For example a group who kidnapped and tortured a mage is not able to understand that the mages cabal had a right to be angry and may have been justified in their shock and awe extraction methods. I do miss Hunters Hunted.
The official hunter forums indicate that most don't play like this tho.
@YaoiHuntressEarth It aint so bad if you read the official Hunter forums. I feel bad that in light of the more or less reasonable take most have on the game I am so stuck on what the books frequently seem to ask of the reader in terms of intellectual dishonesty
Every now and then I work up the will to read a bit and notice that here and there it flat out says "as a Hunter you will now and then REQUIRE the aid of a supernatural to remedy the doings of another, so don't gib all on sight"
I feel you on the pre-effed book deal. I was in a rush to get my hands on Mage and the only copy at the store had a worn spine. Probably got used at one of the tables a few times.
Also, about the jumping into the supernatural characters in WoD: it's true that playing a mortal can be more dramatically horrific in a cthulhu-esque manner. The thing though is that while SOME people go into Vampire for the super-powers, the truth is that it's supposed to be a different kind of horror. Particularly, the personal horror of monstrocity and what depths man can sink to given the opportunity and "necessity".
Read Plato, Timaeus in particular, for the theory on Gaia from Werewolf. Also look into alot more of Plato for political structure in the Camarilla. Look up the political faction called the Technocracy, which existed in the USA a few decades ago. The WoD setting and its themes are ripped from existing literature, though their rules are quite unique.
No offence but you need to be more direct about your points you trail off a lot then will pick up the main point again then trail pick another point then go back to the first without a bridge, maybe a script would help with this or at least a presentation with bullet points in front of you
The NWoD is a weak setting, that had so many issues when it first came out. Requiem was horrible, it wasn't playtested enough and was put out way to soon. WW needed another year of play testing, proof reading and editing before they should have released it. From my understanding the later settings Mage, wearwolf etc are better.
Its pretty much the same as the WoD corebook, Only it gives you more options, and helps with creating monsters and the like for your players to come up against.
I would say very nearly any of them, especially the supernaturals' core books.
My friends and I had a werewolf chronicle running for a while that everyone loved... so if I had to pick just one I would probably say Werewolf the forsaken.
hi. i'm just starting up a WOD game. Do I need the storytellers screen? How important is it to have one? if you have one could you please do a review on it. There isn't a single review for a gamer screen on youtube! (as far as I could find anyway) you could be the first!!
You'll find that you really don't need a GMs screen to run most games. If you're really worried about your players reading your notes upside down then make your own screen out a couple of pieces of cardboard.
@bearforce001 One thing I will say about screens personally. It seems they do have the rules for basics and dice rolls, but sometimes the more obscure rules are not included as I feel they should be. There are some fun things to be done with screens if the GM decides to cheat. Example: GM rolls for damage, comes up with 6 pips on each die, and calls it 2 damage. Otherwise the game is over too quickly. Or a roll of two ones that hits for 20 at a whim. Just don't get caught.;-)

Mechanically, NWoD is FAR superior. However, OWoD is AMAZING story wise.

@jkhaleel Absolutely! When I play campaigns, we use mechanics of new WoD, but stick to Old WoD lore :3

@YuriPRIME That's what I'd do if I ever ran a game (I really like the virtue-vice system).

Vampire the requiem, werewold the forsaken, and mage teh awakening!? NO SIR! IN MY MIND I STILL USE VTM WTA AND MAGE TEH ASCENSION!!

Old WOD is much better than new. I've played multiple games of both of them. I think NWOD is a decent game but nothing close to the original.

Not the only system I play, but I really do love it.

WoD Supernaturals are NOT Uber when they start out. Just a note.
I also agree that your summary of Hunter: The Vigil is a bit pompous. But as you warned, you would be talking out of your ass at some point.
keiryuujin 2 years ago
it is by far my favorite game setting because it is set up very well and is flexible for the storyteller and can be inspired by so many things

Nice summary, and I agree that WoD is at its best when you're playing the little fish.

You don't need a screen, but the screens are nice for having quick references for rules and modifiers and such.
