Just occurred to me that this arrangement is similar to Barry Manilow's version. Very different from the musical arrangement (I always did think this arrangement stripped away a lot of the angst of the musical version), but it has its own merits (sounds smooth as silk!). Never realized that Jason really did go for some high notes near the end of this recording.

OMG I totally disagree with eldiran2. Jason sings this with SO much depth and feeling. The context in-which the song was written is totaly irrelevent. Jason brings so much passion to the lyrics, without staying within the guidelines of the muscial. I believe that is true talent. Every artist must put his personal mark on any one else's music that he sings. Jason took this song and made it his own, singing from the depths only known to him. I love this version more than the original.

This studio version is certainly an improvement on his Idol version, which he really botched up (as the judges agreed; his was the beginning of his fall)...BUT, though he sings it well here, he is totally wrong for the song: it is narrated by an aging person (actually an old pussy cat!), remembering sadly their glory days. Jason's too young and naive for its depths.
