HD isn't a modern invention. Anything shot on 35mm film has about 4 times more resolution than Blu-ray. Go and Look at The Prisoner or Star Trek season 1 on Blu-ray... they're often regarded as reference quality along with the likes of Batman Begins or Blade Runner. I have a film from the 1920's on Blu-ray and the detail is gobsmacking. Watch the video on here called 'Blu-ray vs DVD the ultimate 1080p comparison', set to 720p full screen... and prepare to be amazed.
@GhibliFan1 Thanks for the reply. I know that 35mm native resolution is far higher than HD. Mine wasn't a concern in regards of the quality but of the content. The elements in that TV Series are very simplistic (special effects, costume, the space itself, the monsters) compared to nowadays movies/series of that kind. I have the whole series in DVD which I bought about 8 years ago; however its Blue Ray version doesn't enhance anything that is already enhanced from the regular DVD.
You watch a show in the context of the time it was made. Star Trek TOS on blu-ray was one of the most ambitious projects as regards budget for restorations in HD, with all new CGI... and most purists watch the Blu-rays with the original 60's effects (both are included). HD enhances anything. I understand you have the DVD's and might not want to upgrade, but fact is... the BD's enhance the appreciation of the series for most people. This has been a popular Network set.
The amazing thing is that except for the way the moon gets pushed out of orbit much of the premise is somewhat believable ...look at the Eagle...I wouldn't be surprised if its design doesn't meet the basic needs for a cargo transport ship on the moon.
It's amazing how the influence of 2001 A Space Odyssey seemed to cause the effects in Gerry Anderson's shows to step up to a whole new level with Space:1999. Still looks superb to this day, too. And I believe this series, especially the episode called War Games, helped inspire George Lucas when he made the first Star Wars movie.
I perfer season 1 because the stories were more believable. Plus there were too many story lines with changing ito somwthig instead of just using her brain. The HD looks great but could not they have also updated the effects too like the original Star Trek?
Great series; I personally prefer Season 2, mainly because it has the beautiful Catherine Schell as " Maya " and the ladies wear a lovely front left corner split skirt and boots ( I've uploaded some " Maya" clips ). But I also like Season 1 and watched them on tv in the 70's / early 80's ( in Australia ); along with " UFO ", " Captain Scarlett ", " The Thunderbirds " and " Dr Who ". The models ( Moonbase etc ) were of course superb !!! Regards.
This is simply one of the Best sci fi series of all time probably the best for seom decades! I have been a fan since a kid i just loved this series and now that i have seen the Blue ray complete first season i can't wait for the 2nd one to come out as well
I hear they didn't crop the picture top and bottom and left it native 4x3 A.K.A (12x9).
The reason I didn't buy the Thunderbirds on Blu-Ray is because that series was cropped to 16x9 to be full screen on new TV's.I cannot wait to see the quality of the spaceships and explosions in 1080p.I'm glad this show was shot in 35mm color film
The shows like Dr Who,Blakes 7 etc were shot on analog tape and look like shit.
did they update the CGI work? Would love to see the improved Eagles or Hawks! :-)

Have the Network boxset is there any benefit in having it on bluray? Apart from pic quality are there any more extras?

Does any one know if this DVD package includes season 2? I liked season 2 better than season one as it was my favorite of all Space: 1999 TV shows.

I think I may have to buy this one when it comes out in the US. I only saw one or two episodes back when I was a kid, but it seems pretty decent.

@kallemick The sets, costumes, and general overall atmosphere was obviously a huge influence in how Trek:TNG would be presented.

If I watch this on a normal DVD player will it still look better than the old version? I have a ps3 (blu-ray) but no hd tv..just wondered.?
waynebartman 1 year ago
@waynebartman
You can only read it on a blu-ray player or ps3 blu-ray, but if it is connected to a low-def screen, it should look way better than a dvd anyway.
