hello i really appreciate your videos, i have seen conch shell horns online for sale with a mouthpiece is that really necessary? and also is it better to make them as opposed to purchase them already made for playing, thanks ben from chicago..
Matt, thanks for the videos -- I've got a lot of work to do, but have found your 3 videos very helpful. Out of curiosity, how large are the holes on your queen and helmet conchs? I have trouble hitting the fundamental on my helmet -- I started out with a smaller hole and am thinking I need to enlarge it a little. -Alan
@georgekaneohe on the larger shells, the hole should still not be much wider in diameter than a trumpet mouthpeice. I feel this way. I have heard many people want try larger 'trombone size' holes, but i do not know anyone who has actually done it and commented on it. Think about it this way. no matter how wide the shell is at the end, they all begin with very small 'lead pipes', so a mouthpeice size that is appropriate for the begining of the shell is probably what's best for the whole shell.
@blacklungsjoe That sounds like a reasonable way to look at it. I found I just needed to vary my technique a little -- I got used to the queen conch and the range is of course quite different. FYI: I'm able to get C, D, E, F on my helmet conch using similar positions to what you're using. Now I just need to practice more! -Alan
Nice! Lovin' the conch lessons. First time I saw Steve Turre whip out the conch shells I was blown away. Kudos for the teaching. Gonna keep an eye out for a few of my own. Only have 1 now and you've inspired me to pick it up more. Thanks.
