From when it signed on, the Apple owned the "rock franchise" in New York - it hammered WNEW and WPLJ like they were roofing nails. Then in 1984, WAPP's parent company (Doubleday Broadcasting) saw WHTZ's ratings doing CHR and chased after it. Stupid. The Apple's format change to CHR killed it - the station wound up being bought by Emmis and turned into dance-y "Hot 103.5" And as for Scott Shannon, well.... Alumnus, WAPP '83-'85, WHTZ '85 - '86.
In the end only WHTZ and PLJ survived. Well PLJ survived three format changes. Album Rock to CHR to Hot AC and kept its hertiage calls intact (never mind the WWPR calls back in 1988).
Too bad all 3 stations succumbed to the radio monopolies (2 stations WHTZ and WKTU, formerly WAPP, now owned by Clearchannel) which operates by continuing to play "Evacuate The Dance Floor" 24/7 all the time.
Remember NYers, payola could sometime turn hit songs into worthless crap!
I grew up With Joe Krause. Joe worked at the legendary WABX in Detroit. He also built a Broadcast studio in his basement. This was a long time ago he looks like a kid.
we need NY radio stations to change their formats. I'm tired of hearing today's crap on almost every single station. we need more oldies. KTU used to play more 80s, now they've moved more into today's music. I need more 80s on the radio.
Isn't it sad what happened to nyc radio and music in general? I love 80's too. I know time moves on but music really sucks and it leaves such an empty hole in me.
I know. NYC radio is terrible now. My only favorite time to listen to it is on Saturdays when PLJ does Saturday night 80s and 102.7 plays Saturday night 90s!
radio meant everything to me. I've wanted to be a radio disc jockey since I was 5, but wound up becomming a recording artist. Now the problem is, radio wants to play rapp shit, so now I'm trying to release in Europe. I just covered Runaway , originally by Del Shannon. I put it on youtube if youre interested, search joey binky runaway. They like it but wont play it
there was a station like this in L.A called movin 93.9 exactly like in this video. Well back then it was "new" but its classics now. but the station got sold. I enjoyed it a lot.
Wapp radio is from 1983 and doesnt exist anymore. it was on 103.5, which is now , wktu, which back in the early 1980's used to be 92 wktu on 92.3 fm all here in Ney York city. sorry. the old phone number for wapp was 212-955-wapp
what ever happen when WAPP became WQHT 103.5

The idea is to do away with all New York radio. It's all incompetent.

@JoseTwitterFan Half the stations were making money back in the day and the others where not. That was the ideal behind ownership consolidation.

LOL at the WAPP DJ cleaning his record with "Discwasher".
After watching this video, I never want to hear "Love Is A Battlefield" again.

I remember the summer of '83 when WAAP debut as "commerical free all summer". It was awesome; my entire school adopted it as our favorite station.
