actually that is a hard rudiment.. however the hybrid rudiment is a little more difficult. its a total of 4 flams. play the paradiddle but with flams.
Many flam rudiments sound good played with one hand on hi hat and the other on snare, but playing "flat flams" (left-right unisons with equal volume, rather than actual flams, which require one hand to strike just before the other). On that topic, all of the flam beats in the book Stick Control can be practiced with flat flams, as well as regular flams. Practicing unisons with left hand on snare and right on floor tom is useful, as there is often a need to play such unisons when filling.
great bit of knowledge, but the words could be revised more for example: "even my more advanced students, which I teach" - just a bit redundant. Less talk more play, in essence. Otherwise excellent video.
Wow! Who would have thought this rudiment would trigger so many comments! Seriously though, I am glad to hear that others find it difficult also and not just me. For me, the hard part is that my left weaker hand can't go any faster and I don't know of a way yet to close it with a bounce. Thanks for the vid DF
@TheLovedahiphop I think I decided what you're talking about. Everytime he stops playing, and begins talking the vocal mic picks up the resonance of the snares, and the rest of the kit. Because the mic is gated the "chord" you mentioned just seems to start out of nowhere. 3:55 or so is a good example. Again, you hear it the second he speaks. It's subtle.
"What I'd like to do in this video is show you how to play a decent Flam Paradiddle so that you can impress your friends and, basically, have a nice time with a decent rudiment."
I FRIGGIN' LOVE THIS GUY.
That kind of positive attitude makes me really happy because all you ever seem to get on YouTube is idiots arguing about who's better between Mike Portnoy and Danny Carey.
-He's playing wat us experienced drummers call American grip which is halfway between french and german. Just because everyone on ur marching band squad must play german does not mean set players do the same lol
Your hands are too turned upright. What I mean is your palms should be parallel with your drum. If there was a quarter on the top of your hand, it's not supposed to fall off. There is way too much movement going on with your forearm for just drumming on one drum as well. Perhaps you were just exaggerating your movement for the sake of breaking it down... On a positive note, your drums sound superb brotha.
I can do those daddyfunk3. Love the rudiments. When your good at them, they sound great! Boring shit to learn but instrumental in playing the drums well.
That really was an informative video. I know what you mean about all the negative comments. Anyhow, thanks for the lesson. I appreciate the lesson as a lefty.
Daddy Funk appears to be a cool guy. I like it when a person can really play and he or she takes the time to teach those who are willing to learn. The flam-paradiddle is a great exercise.
Hes nto using a moeler technique which is why it sounds so open. there are only 2 accents which are both on the flams, the rest of the 16th notes plaed are all played gracefully, not ghosted but not too open like hes playing.
love drum terminology... it is clear to me here that what should be played at any given moment is what "feels" the best for the drummer- what the drummer's psyche, nerves, and muscles 'need'... but then I'm all for 'art' drumming- along with the functional first tracks to be laid down, I always make another as the very last track, and think 'art'...
Yep flams need to be tighter! im not dissing your playing at all (before i get hounded with hate mail!!) I spent 12 years in a pipe band and flams are one of the most common used rudiments in side drumming! but should be played tighter than that. Great sounding snare you have!!!
It doesn't matter how fast you play it, it's how it applies to what you are doing. slow down!! 60bpm highest to start. work every technique you know.. Low strokes, moeller, french, German everything in between.
Try accenting the e's, then the ah's after you begin getting that balance and feel going! and make musical phrases...not just a barrage of flam frenzy...unless you are at a music store trying to impress people... :)
What's difficult for me on this rudiment is to get the flam as clean in higher tempos as in low. I can play the flam, but it doesn't come the way I want it to do and usually the right handed flams and the left handed flams sound unequal.
hey man Ive played all types of music from drum corps to hardcore to funk. the best way to practice any rudiment is slow to fast to slow speed up as you go and as soon as you mess up start over and do this until you can smoothly transition from very very slow to as fast as you can play that specific rudiment.
I found that there are quadruple strokes within this rudiment. Right plays one (an a 2 e). Left plays two (an a 1 e). Likewise the flam tap is triple stroke even though the sound of the rudiment is in 2s.
you can get flam paradiddles REALLY fast!! learn lRL, then lRLR, then lRLRR. Repeat with the left. keep gracies at 1", taps 5", accents 9". to build strength, learn RRRRLLLLs. keep rebound strokes straight down, straight up. No upstrokes!!! No extra movement.keep flam sound open, don't spank the flams, aim for nice 'chuu' sound. pull flam sound out of head. Should sound like a choo choo train. practice slow, then medium, then fast, then go for fighter pilot speed!!
I'd say that your flam isn't very tight, but that's coming from a background in marching... I understand that drumset is more groovy and about "feel".
Can I help you for correct flam paradiddle? If You can see Philly Jo Jones in youtube, for exemple, he play flam very near and a sound is great...your is particular bat not "great"...and your hand is only down..with respect...
Very excellent instruction. I will practice this a lot since when I just did it on my practice pad I can see that it is an excellent rudiment. Hey, what kind of tom toms are those? They are very short and almost look like snare drums.

here in the states we call that a flam-a-diddle. A flam para-diddle would have a flam followed by a complete para-diddle.

Jawbreaker2237 3 years ago
Hi daddyfunk,
this rudiment is always difficult for the beginners and sometimes for advanced drummers because it contains three strokes for each hand.
When I learn this rudiment to my students I prepare them for a week or more playing three stroke rolls.
Anyway, the third note must be played as a ghost, so it isn't exactly a three stroke roll but such exercise helps a lot.
More, in my experience flam-paradiddle must be learned as a completely different rudiment than single-paradiddle.
Ciao!
italiarovinata 3 years ago
@ daddyfunk: excuse my bad english,
I wrote "learn" but I meant "teach", so the correct phrases are: "when I TEACH this rudiment", and "flam-paradiddle" must be teached as..."
Ciao!
