My kids asked me what used to scare me when I was little.I told them there was this commercial for a movie called "magic" that was one of the scariest things ever. I then decided we should try to find it on You Tube. It still freaks me out, but we watch it over and over.
...I told my kids how this commercial used to scare me sooo bad as a kid. I showed it to my 13 year old and my little 6 year old to see if they would think it was scary. It didn't even phase them. My 6 year old thought it was funny!!! I was like Oh my Gosh! Kids now a day are sooo desensitised!!!
This scared the crap out of me as a child. I'd be sitting in front of the tv set watching a show then THIS commercial would come on. I'd have to cover my eyes! But of course, I'd have to peek and then be scared to go to bed afterwards. To this day I HATE PUPPETS!!! They really creep me out!!!
80's horror films became gory and the focus turned into blood, eyes popping out, zombies eating brains and so on.... in the 90's horror films became too technologically advanced to be even scary.... the horror films today are mostly remakes of 70's horror films!

@emmy62197 There are scary moments. It's more of a movie based on psychology as you'll see if you watch it. Careful.. you're only 14.. watching this movie might cause you to mature past your years in your taste for good movies unlike what we get today :)
@emmy62197 Scary as HEEEEELLL. You will shit out your own EYEZBALLLLLLZZZZ. I suggest you watch it double quick. And what the hell kind of dweeb asks if it is too scary, ya bloody wimp??!! Just watch it. On your own. In the dark. And leave the damn front door OPEEEEEEN!! TeeHee. ;D
Went to this movie with my uncles as a kid. I'm 39 years old. It was playing at our theater in '78(?)
Needless to say this dummy scared the living SH*T out of me!!! lol.
I didn't sleep for a week. My uncles always LOVED to take me to see horror movies back then. If you had a guardian with you? You were in.
They took me to see ALIEN at 8 years old. American Werewolf in London? Yup! It was when they took me to The Thing with Kurt Russell that I was like "NO MORE!" "NOPE. I'm done!" (laughing)

Aw man. This trailer and Suspiria ('77) were the only ones that had me scurrying to my room hiding under the covers in fright. Totally had nightmares from this stuff. It's true though, this movie was more of a drama rather than horror, from what I remember. Nevertheless, the trailer and the movie posters were creeeeepy!
This was my first scary movie! Scared the F'ing hell out of me! Have not seen it since! In a strange way it makes me feel better that i am not the only one! I am thinking about watching it again!
I was around 4 or 5 when the previews for this movie would come on tv. It scared the crap out of me every time! I would run to my room. I had nightmares about it.
This movie is the reason I am terrified of all things clown, dummy or otherwise! It is still so scary as a 41 yr old, but i now see the brilliance that is Sir Hopkins! After seeing Silence, I thaught.. He tapped into the dummy!
At home when I was a kid living in the Bronx. Just happened to be home alone when this first aired. Turned on every light in that apartment as it scared the hell out me. The dummies face burned an image in my brain for months. Damn you fats!!!!
This ad used to scare the hell out of me as a kid. I would have to turn the sound down--that voice! This has to be the all-ugliest ventriloquist dummy ever created, and considering that they are all hideous, that's saying something.
I recall seeing this commercial in 1978 when I was 10....and it scared the crap out of me!! Now that it is on Blu-Ray, I can finally buy it and watch it...for the first time! I'm so excited!!!
These TV commercials scared me as a kid! I remembered them for years. I was a lifelong Anthony Hopkins fan after this movie!
I love all the creepy doll stuff --the Zuni doll from "Trilogy of Terror", "Dead Silence", the cool "Twilight Zone" and "Night Gallery" episodes from the 60's-70's, etc. If you get a chance, check out the movie "Dolls" (1986) -- a cool stop-action animation piece by the great evil-dollmeister Charles Band!
That little fucking doll commercial fucked me up when I was little. Specifically, I remember one time I was sitting in the living room with my older brother. He was watching TV and I was playing with a deck of cards. That shit came on and I threw the whole deck and started running.
I guess I wasn't the only one who was scared sh*tless of this commercial!! LOL Maaaaan, I'll never forget when I was a kid this commercial came on while I was watching TV with my older brothers and I quickly ran to my mother's room for an "escape/comfort"!! Only one thing....she was watching the VERY SAME CHANNEL!! Needless to say, I ran to the living room and covered my ears so I couldn't hear it!! Too funny!! Can't help but laugh now!!
THE WORD YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IS 'TEASER'. SO, IN THAT RESPECT,'TEASER TRAILER' WOULD FIT THE DECSRPTION THAT, I SUSPECT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. NO WONDER THE ABOVE TRAILER WAS DROPPED BY SO MANY TV CHANNELS. IT'S EFFECTIVE, THOUGH I CAN SEE WHY IT TERRIFIED CHILDREN.
Trilogy of Terror is also another element born of Rod Serling's work. I think Rod was brilliantly dark and all of our now movie makers owe him much respect for the money that has been made on the bodies of what he left behind for them to feed on. If he had the CGI now available during his time, woooow boy!, none of these guys around now would be able to make a dime lol hahahaa
All your fears were born into your minds at the hands of Mr. Rod Serling..hahahahaha :) He did it first and he gave Steven Spielberg his start in directing, check it out...Night Gallery, Twilight Zone. This movie is a creature of his breathe and I think it was brilliant advertising, just wrong time period for what it packed in substance for an ill prepared era of kids and even adults at the time lol. All praise to Rod for his works of true terror without CGI or speed cameras.
Brilliant Film, Hopkins' genius as an actor was evident and more of a psychological Thriller than horror. Sometimes reality is scarier than the Supernatural.
@jjhaywood: I agree; however, the dvd does have a good featurette about ventriloquism. One thing I did notice about the movie "Magic", is that it has many things in common w/ movie "Secret Window" starring Johnny Depp.
@hootyhaha: They r called "trailers" because, originally, they were shown "after" the main feature, but ppl would leave soon after the movie was over & not watch them; however, the name stuck, so now-a-days, they show them "before" the feature film, but they're still called "trailers."
Thanks for posting this! I was 11 when I first saw it. It came on during M*A*S*H at about 10:00 at night. It scared me so bad, but I watched it every time it came on. I still haven't seen the movie though. Too scary
People something that comes before a movie is PREVIEWING the movie. It can not be a trailer if it COMES BEFORE. Even in the PREVIEWS, it says "THE FOLLOWING PREVIEW." Why do you all insist so much on continuing to screw up the English language. That's why people continue to dumb down, nobody TAWKS RIGHT! Gon on though, continue being a bunch of tards and screwing up the meaning of the English language, this hasn't been the only word. No wonder Education is hurting. This was the final straw.
Clearly the final straw in terms of the destruction of the English language is the misuse of the terms "trailer" and "preview".
Whoops, had my "anal-retentive fuckwad" hat on. Let's try that again. Movie trailers, or "previews", are so named because they were originally shown after the end of a movie. This practice quickly changed, because everyone in the theatre would leave before the trailers would start. Still, the name stuck, and now the terms are interchangeable.
@dancingmakesbabies So, you are saying PREviews, too , were shown at the same time as the trailers? Hmmm... I don't think you have your "anal retentive fuckwad" hat on tight enough!!!!!!!!!!
@dancingmakesbabies just because they are not shown at the end of movies doesnt mean they are not trailers. does it really matter when a trailer is shown to determine it being a trailer, im sure if you look up the English language word trailer, you'll probably see that theres no mention of it being at the end of a movie.
I remember seeing this trailer when I was five, thinking it was the most disturbing thing I had ever seen. When I finally saw the movie on HBO a year or two later, I was a little disappointed but I guess I wasn't old or sophisticated enough to really appreciale the plot of the movie. Thanks for posting.
I have been practicing ventriloqusm since I was 6 I am 14 now and I got a new one that looked like that 1 a few months ago. I thought it was so cute, I used it every day . yesterday I saw this movie for the first time and ill use another dummy angain! I threw away all of my dummies, and I like 19 of em!
This trailer made me sleep with my head under the covers for years and caused a massive bout of phobia for dummies. This is the first time I've watched the it for 30 years.

This was another trailer that used to scare the shit out of me. The lighting and tense music are brilliant.

This was the final straw.
hootyhaha 1 year ago
Clearly the final straw in terms of the destruction of the English language is the misuse of the terms "trailer" and "preview".
Whoops, had my "anal-retentive fuckwad" hat on. Let's try that again. Movie trailers, or "previews", are so named because they were originally shown after the end of a movie. This practice quickly changed, because everyone in the theatre would leave before the trailers would start. Still, the name stuck, and now the terms are interchangeable.

@dancingmakesbabies I'm glad that the previews are before the movie now because then when I'm late..I usually haven't missed any of the movie.

@dancingmakesbabies thank you, you learn something new every day.

@dancingmakesbabies So, you are saying PREviews, too , were shown at the same time as the trailers? Hmmm... I don't think you have your "anal retentive fuckwad" hat on tight enough!!!!!!!!!!
Wedneswere 11 months ago
@dancingmakesbabies just because they are not shown at the end of movies doesnt mean they are not trailers. does it really matter when a trailer is shown to determine it being a trailer, im sure if you look up the English language word trailer, you'll probably see that theres no mention of it being at the end of a movie.

First saw this trailer at age 9 during the '78 Gator Bowl (where Woody Hayes' went nuts and punched a Clemson player).

Do you know 'Slappy the Dummy' in the R.L. Stine books? He was the dummy that started my fear of dummies.

Still the scariest thing I've ever seen, relatively speaking. I used to be so terrified of this thing.
ceecee777 2 years ago 4
The trailer got to me, not the movie. At the time I was thinking there would be something supernatural about the dummy.

I remember this commercial terrifying me as a child. When it would air on TV, I would close my eyes and cover my ears.
About 10 years later I saw the movie and loved it. It wasn't a horror movie as much as a psychological thriller. But very gripping and entertaining

The trailer was scarier than the movie.

I remember this. It would certainly give small children nightmares...

This trailer was pulled from circulation because it gave kids nightmares.

This trailer made me sleep with my head under the covers for years and caused a massive bout of phobia for dummies. This is the first time I've watched the it for 30 years.
