Billy Bragg hasn't been a union member for years , if ever, and the musicians union does't count. Union membership nowadays is only a way to extort money from the working man to give to the labour party. They aren't able to get money by direct means so they use the unions as bully boys to extort a tax from workers. If you don't pay they send you to coventry or worse. A true union would use the money to help those who loose their jobs to get back into work or retrain.
The Union has really lost what it once stood for. Union Reps. tend to be Bosses' men and Sell-Outs, but at least it still protects the Worker's rights
The problem is NOT unions. Unions are good. Unions all over the world have benefited workers, even non-union workers. The problem IS the modern US worker, especially the modern white US worker. Unions in the US, in general, have lost sight of their true purpose and have settled for compromise instead. The modern US worker does not have the same determination or willingness to fight like the workers of the past. Complacency has won.
Unions are supposed to give workers collective power and help keep unemployment down by creating skilled laborers who can find work. If some unions fail in some way, then it is the fault of those unions, NOT the idea of a union. It is a matter of poor execution or poor planning.
Well, yeah, in theory almost everything could work. The problem is in execution. If a union is protecting bad workers simply because they are union workers then the union is doing a disservice to the good workers in the union, the union as a whole and the whole of society as well.
And even though that's how it should work in theory doesn't mean unions should be eliminated because they don't work that way in practice. They need to be reconstructed from the bottom up and remember what their true purpose is.

"One union, across all borders, be they ethnic, work related or geographical!"
You're so stupid and naive. As if "workers of the world" (ie. Marx) is realistic. Let me explain it to you:
in your support of illegal workers, you are merely supporting the cheap labor which companies are making a ton of profit from. There is no chance in hell that illegal workers and those U.S. workers who were replaced by illegals are going to unite. Can you understand that you shit-for-brains???
No, I can't understand that because I see it happening every day (workers uniting). You would have also opposed black and white workers uniting or other immigrant workers and "non" immigrant workers uniting because you're a greedy xenophobic self-centered racist. It is that type of person that takes away our jobs, not illegal immigrants. Only by organizing together in a union can we beat the cheap labor companies, which is 99 percent of all companies in existence, regardless of immigration laws.
Do you really think the 17,000 former U.S. Tyson Chicken plant workers, who were replaced with cheap illegal workers, are going to "unite" with those illegals who took their jobs?
How about the thousands of fired U.S. workers who used to work for Shea Homes or K & B homes???? Do you think they are going to "unite" with the very Mexican illegal workers who replaced them? Do you think the Mexicans want to unite with the people they replaced?
Are you that stupid to think that is going to happen?
Like most Minuteman, you are a very rude and irrational person, also severely misinformed. If the chicken workers had united with the immigrant workers, Mexican worker, etc., in the first place they would have been far better off. They didn't lose their jobs because of illegal immigrants. They lost their jobs due to racist, ignorant, corporate ass licking sell-outs like you. Read "Juan Crow" in a recent edition of the Nation and improve yourself.
If workers are organized in the first place, instead of bashing fellow workers and submitting to their real enemies, they'd still be working at Tyson. There is strength in numbers, not in fighting your own kind. You don't like it, but immigrants, "legal" or not, are your own kind. You bow to the corporations and then you blame the results on immigrants. Fascism isn't the answer.
You believe in International Proletarianism, a union of all the world's workers. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get even a small union of, say, 500 workers to be united? They always faction off into different camps, from the hard liners to the benders to mgmt and those in between. So how are you going to organize billions of people across the globe, speaking hundreds of languages, with endless different cultures/customs, different standards of living, etc???
Of course I know it's hard. I was a labor organizer plus I have studied labor history. Organizing masses of workers across ethnic, workplace and geographical borders has been done right here in the USA with great success before and it can happen again. With increased global ties, it is not only easier (in the sense of communication) to organize internationally, but essential. It's already being done. As the union song says, "Step by step..."
You believe in globalization, just of the Marxist-based kind (ie. Alter-globalization).
The other type of globalist is the economic globalist (corporations, etc).
The economic globalists simply use people like you in order to tear down borders, dissolve nation-states, etc... toward global gov't. That's why economic globalists like the Rockefeller Foundation and Ford Foundation fund leftist groups. They'll win out in the end, and youll realize you were used.
Global solidarity against corporatism is not the same as global corporatism. You're right, the Rich try to co-opt progressive movements. So we have to reject that. The only way is to organize, reject neo-liberalism, reject the neo-cons, and reject the Minuteman fascism that serves the purpose of global predatory capitalism by dividing the workers by "race."
You seem to think the global elite corporate types sit around worrying that one day the world's workers will all "unite". You also think the elites scheme about ways to divide workers based on race or other things (to prevent workers from "uniting"). This is nonsense!!! Elites don't think about such things. Why? Because the very concept of the world's workers "uniting" is so absurd, so laughable, so ridiculous... it's fantasy. Elites want cheap labor of any race or any mix of races.
And, by the way, stop jumping to conclusions. I am not a Marxist. More of an anarchist. I believe in capitalism with a small "c", socialism with a small "s" and the philosophy of anarchism with a medium size "a". Prudent eclecticism is my approach. But above all, we must find our common ground as workers and organize, together, not against each other.
Sounds like you're describing Communism in the purest sense (ie. shared authority). On a very small scale, your ideology probably works OK, such as with indiginous peoples (we see this today, ie. EZLN type approach). But in large societies, it wouldn't work. Imagine getting even 1 million people to agree to such a system. Never would it work. Chaos would result.
The main problem with Communism is that humans are wired for selfishness & greed, for better or worse, that's the reality.
I'm not describing communism or any ism, just organizing. Let the people decide what ism they want. Can't get 1 million people to agree to organize and strike at one time? Nonsense. Happens in Europe all the time, look at Poland, look at France and look at the United States May 1 2006. Far more than 1 million, it was millions.
It wasn't a strike on May 1, 2006... rather it was a million or so illegal alien squatters screaming for their imagined "rights". If I were President, I would have rounded them up and deported every last one of those border jumpers. Those illegals need to return to their home countries and fight for revolution there.
Yes, but then you are a fascist and fascists round people up and deport them, or enslave them, or gas them. On moral grounds fascism is wrong, in my view, but also on practical grounds. Imagine if we started to deport "illegal alien squatters screaming for their imagined rights." Then we would have to deport all of the Minuteman members like you who don't know their history. But what other country would take them? Nazi Germany no longer exists, after all.
I would let the Asian illegals stay because they are pretty good people. Asians are generally clean, have small families, value education greatly, have a very low crime rate, are upwardly mobile, learn Engish, etc.
On the other hand, Mexicans and Central Americans are trashy people. Who wants trash in their country? Nobody.
Whenever these people infest a decent U.S. neighborhood, it quickly turns into a 3rd world barrio. It's not just me who says this, everyone says it.
God (Who is a totally non-existant deity, until otherwise is proven, which it has not been)...You're aware that the only reason it turns into a third world barrio, is because of the quasi-fascists that do their best to deny them education, homes and, most important of all, a living wage? If they had all these, they wouldn't be criminals. Asian immigrants on the other hand come from developed countries, and most of them come because some corporations promotes them or such.
No. The reason they still live in a barrio is because of the hispanic culture; it doesn't value education. That's the #1 problem with hispanics.
Look at the 800,000 Vietnemese boat people who the USA took in in the late 1970's. These people were dirt poor and uneducated. Yet Vietnemese have risen to the top of American society in a single generation. Why? Because Asians value education.
Hispanics have had 42 years of affirative action and they have wasted all those opportunities.
No, they rose up there because the american state thought it in their interest to educate them for the sake of the eventual plan to retake Vietnam, somewhat like the bay of pigs invasion. It just never happenend.
Oh sure that was the plan [laughing]. Yeah right... educated, successful, properous Vietnemese Americans are real likely candidates to want to take part in some supposed plan to "retake Vietnam". They are living a good life here, trust me, they don't want to "retake Vietnam" in any capacity. You are smoking crack if you believe that. Vietnemese rose up here because their culture values education very highly (unlike Mexicans). Deal with it you mother fucking bitch.
Just because the vietnamese do not want to return does not stop the US government from wanting them to, in order to curb the 'horrible' threat of world communism. Also, there's no need to call eachother names.
I guess nobody quite "gets" the relationship between the catastrophic decline of the auto industry and steel industry in the US and union power. Wherever unions have been strong, costs have risen and productivity declined. US unions are now a fraction of their former size and power because, like a tumor, they destroyed the very industries that fed them. Oh, except for unionized govt employees like the teacher's union. And we all know what a "great" K-12 school system we have, don't we?
Be honest, the reason why the auto sector is failing has more to do with the companies not being sell the crappy ass car they DESIGNED, not the work of the 8-5 workers. There also hemoraging money because the US has no public health care, therefore they have to pay the costs for the aging workforce. Here in Canada, we don't make the companies pay for that, therefore, were doing alright... now if they can only build sellable cars they wouldbe on easy street.
runner: IMO price was a factor too. In the 70's Japanese cars were not only better, but much cheaper. Today, quality is the primary issue. I grew up in Michigan where everybody's dad worked on the GM assembly line. I could tell you some real horror stories about worker mischief and disloyalty which would have impacted quality; it was virtually impossible to fire them. But, I admit, the main reason for poor quality is poor design and mgt must take the blame.
actually, it's because of free trade agreements wthat enabled companies to go overseas to exploit other workers BECAUSE they could no longer do so to the ones here. and to blame the teacher's union for the flaws in our education system is idiotic.
chilam: You need to do some research. The US auto and steel industry decline had NOTHING to do with US corporations outsourcing overseas. Our industries declined because of sky-high labor costs...driven by the unions. Once our costs got high enough, foreign govts/corporations started their own industries and kicked our asses with lower prices higher quality. Re K-12 Ed, there are plenty of reasons for our problems and IMO the Teacher's Unions is #1; zero accountability, reactionary as hell.
Great video and song. What's happened to the unions? Selfish capitalism and individualos, seems to have eroded humanity's sense of solidarity with eachother.
prrolg. Wipe those tears n harden up princess Hopefully the bro/law knows what you think now and gives you a right slapping. You sound like a jealous guttless child. Leave the gun shit out of the conversation. There is alot like you that say this crap until you r personally involved. Its OK M8 we as unionists will still stand up for your rights.
Ourcomradesbeforeussacrificedeverythingfor there commitment and belief in a fairer working enviroment. Contrary 2 anti union belief. As a unionist I am not anti company and hope that they make a profit. Just dont try and do it at the expense of the workers and if they do well financially then employ more of us. So thanks too the working men and woman who continue 2 stive for the rights of working people around the world there is still alot to do. Maritime Union of Australia proud member 3499.
Weird reading these replies on how the union doesn't work in America. In the wellfare states of Scandinavia the unions function well. Nearly all working men and women is member of one, and our society hasn't colapsed from it. Actually, we have one of the highest standards of living in the world. Power to the unions!
My brother in law is union. Working at Temple University now. He's too fat to work but makes $900 a week. He makes alot of hours but doesn't work many of them. He had a two hour lunch the other day and was bragging about it at a family cookout. Seems they had to go to the recycle center and sell some "scrap" from the job for cash. Doesn't know how I feel cause I keep my mouth shut and my revolver loaded.
When a government is so detached from its constituents that it would on a daily base pass laws to restrict access to free enterprise and illegally penalize thru taxation to finance a fed that is in it for themselves until there is nothing left of you or those you love except for a debt. Rebel against the tyranny of corporate greed and political bullying. One vote, one constitution. Don't let the bullies lie to you and steal your rights!
I had a friend who told me about a strike at Pan American Airways. There was a strike for higher wages. The company then went out of business. He learned a lesson

Its OK M8 we will be there for you.
one rush one push and the world will be ours workers! We have the power of every factory, every harbor every thing can be ours! Black with yellow we`re all shades of brown!
join a union people, we need them look at the social wage where unions are weak,(USA) or where they are strong (Sweden) a union is more than just your rights
Anarchy won't work? IF you think anything we've had is working you must not have had a job working in it. There is wonderful working power in the union. Kentucky IWW
unions had there time and place. i don't understand why they are always against the man above them. he's just doing his job as well. the union doesn't sign their paychecks. it's all socialism anyway.
They built a Starbucks in Phila Pa. Starbucks did'nt use union labor. When the local union found out they went in and destroyed the plumbing and electrical. Goons, thieves and anti democratic. And they get away with it,I mean beating people up.
Starbucks has more then enough money to pay the local standard wage. If this company is going to prey on the middle class, which is a major chunk of there business, they need to be taught that there are people out there that will not stand allow that to happen. Live better, work union.
You show how uneducated and simple minded you are through your own words. If you are my opponent in the "open" shop sector, I'm not in the least bit worried. Thank you for helping the Union cause.
But I hate the fuckers who make $900 a week and stand around like bums. And the sheet metal workers steal the aluminum or copper and sell it for scrap and split the $1000 with the foreman. Hopeless.
First, there is no doubt in my mind that i can and do work harder than you on a daily basis. Second, the morons that steal from work are both Union and non-union. Please do us all a favor and put more than a few seconds of thought into your next post.
Okay dokay here goes. THE FUCKING UNIONS GET ALL THE FUCKING JOBS IN PHILA. THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STEAL ON THAT LEVEL. THEY ARE POLITICALLY PROTECTED SO THE CORRUPTION GOES UP TO THE TOP,THE MAYOR. I WORK AS A HOUSE PAINTER ON A CREW OF 3 GUYS AND I WORK HARDER IN ONE WEEK THAN YOU HAVE EVER WORKED IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE FUCKER!! Have a nice day.
Unions protect all of the middle class. Not just Union members. Your wages would not be what they are if it wasn't for Unions. I do not know what "level" you are talking about. But as far as stealing that you had mentioned, that happens on all job sites. I have worked both Union and non-union in my lifetime, so i know both sides of the fence first hand. By the way i am a bricklayer and you as a painter couldn't carry my toolbag.
I could carry you and your toolbag sonny. Wait till you grow up and you can still get up out of a chair at 10 o'clock at night and you'll know how easy your fucking union was on you.Go back and work private. You won't last until your 40.
Your logic is very strange to me.what i am hearing from you is,that i want to work myself to death(which i am sure is great for you and your family that has to suffer because you are laid up in a bed and they have to take care of you).you are a painter.what is killing you?the paint fumes?is your roller to heavy?try laying a couple hundred block a day. give me a break.you chose your job, as did i.there are millions of people out there worse off then both of us.make a decent point next time
I could lay a couple of hundred block a day.I've laid lock block. All sizes. It's easy if you work 100 days a year. You obviously have never painted. I would love to see you move a 40' ladder all day.Work on a crew where you do everything yourself. Boy you know nothing about work. It is so obvious. Go home and lap your girlfriends pussy and get off you tube.
i thought i said make a decent point this time?? first you know nothing about my personal work history. personally i make around 2000hrs a year. second if you know the proper way to move a ladder it is not hard at all. and for your comment "work on a CREW where you do everything yourself". i thought it was the union guys that"stand around like bums". sounds like thats your scab crew. telling me to go home and have sex with my girlfriend sounds like the smartest thing you have posted yet.
Thanks for the ladder comment. It shows your ignorance. And the three of us do everything ourselves. Who sets up your scaffold bricklayer? Union rules say it can't be you. I watch the union guys building the Comcast bldg in Phila. One out of 10 is working hard. Everyone knows union is bullshit.Just like you. Calling me a scab is typical. One thing though, don't bring baseball bats to my work site.
yes i do not build scaffold. a laborer does that. i also do not hang drywall, rough in plumbing, or paint. i do MY trade, i am a professional. my ladder comment shows ignorance? but with no explanation. not one of your comments show any intelligence. every one of your responses is nothing but name calling and comments that you are not educated on. i am done responding to you. hope you have a nice life working for a cut rate and "stuck in bed after 10pm". good luck with that.
Unions are good, and management is necessary, but neither side should dominate. It's supposed to be a give-and-take.
Therefore, say no to corporatism, but also say no to unions controlling the government.

Only by organizing together in a union can we beat the cheap labor companies, which is 99 percent of all companies in existence, regardless of immigration laws.
OCVOICE 3 years ago
Do you really think the 17,000 former U.S. Tyson Chicken plant workers, who were replaced with cheap illegal workers, are going to "unite" with those illegals who took their jobs?
How about the thousands of fired U.S. workers who used to work for Shea Homes or K & B homes???? Do you think they are going to "unite" with the very Mexican illegal workers who replaced them? Do you think the Mexicans want to unite with the people they replaced?
Are you that stupid to think that is going to happen?
jimj122680 3 years ago
Like most Minuteman, you are a very rude and irrational person, also severely misinformed. If the chicken workers had united with the immigrant workers, Mexican worker, etc., in the first place they would have been far better off. They didn't lose their jobs because of illegal immigrants. They lost their jobs due to racist, ignorant, corporate ass licking sell-outs like you. Read "Juan Crow" in a recent edition of the Nation and improve yourself.
OCVOICE 3 years ago
If you lost your job at Tyson Foods, you'd "unite" with the Mexican illegal who now is working your job?
jimj122680 3 years ago
If workers are organized in the first place, instead of bashing fellow workers and submitting to their real enemies, they'd still be working at Tyson. There is strength in numbers, not in fighting your own kind. You don't like it, but immigrants, "legal" or not, are your own kind. You bow to the corporations and then you blame the results on immigrants. Fascism isn't the answer.
OCVOICE 3 years ago
You believe in International Proletarianism, a union of all the world's workers. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get even a small union of, say, 500 workers to be united? They always faction off into different camps, from the hard liners to the benders to mgmt and those in between. So how are you going to organize billions of people across the globe, speaking hundreds of languages, with endless different cultures/customs, different standards of living, etc???
jimj122680 3 years ago
Of course I know it's hard. I was a labor organizer plus I have studied labor history. Organizing masses of workers across ethnic, workplace and geographical borders has been done right here in the USA with great success before and it can happen again. With increased global ties, it is not only easier (in the sense of communication) to organize internationally, but essential. It's already being done. As the union song says, "Step by step..."
OCVOICE 3 years ago
It's not only hard, it's impossible.
They'll win out in the end, and youll realize you were used.
jimj122680 3 years ago
Global solidarity against corporatism is not the same as global corporatism. You're right, the Rich try to co-opt progressive movements. So we have to reject that. The only way is to organize, reject neo-liberalism, reject the neo-cons, and reject the Minuteman fascism that serves the purpose of global predatory capitalism by dividing the workers by "race."
OCVOICE 3 years ago
You seem to think the global elite corporate types sit around worrying that one day the world's workers will all "unite". You also think the elites scheme about ways to divide workers based on race or other things (to prevent workers from "uniting"). This is nonsense!!! Elites don't think about such things. Why? Because the very concept of the world's workers "uniting" is so absurd, so laughable, so ridiculous... it's fantasy. Elites want cheap labor of any race or any mix of races.
jimj122680 3 years ago
And, by the way, stop jumping to conclusions. I am not a Marxist. More of an anarchist. I believe in capitalism with a small "c", socialism with a small "s" and the philosophy of anarchism with a medium size "a". Prudent eclecticism is my approach. But above all, we must find our common ground as workers and organize, together, not against each other.
OCVOICE 3 years ago
Sounds like you're describing Communism in the purest sense (ie. shared authority). On a very small scale, your ideology probably works OK, such as with indiginous peoples (we see this today, ie. EZLN type approach). But in large societies, it wouldn't work. Imagine getting even 1 million people to agree to such a system. Never would it work. Chaos would result.
The main problem with Communism is that humans are wired for selfishness & greed, for better or worse, that's the reality.
jimj122680 3 years ago
I'm not describing communism or any ism, just organizing. Let the people decide what ism they want. Can't get 1 million people to agree to organize and strike at one time? Nonsense. Happens in Europe all the time, look at Poland, look at France and look at the United States May 1 2006. Far more than 1 million, it was millions.
wudunion 3 years ago
It wasn't a strike on May 1, 2006... rather it was a million or so illegal alien squatters screaming for their imagined "rights". If I were President, I would have rounded them up and deported every last one of those border jumpers. Those illegals need to return to their home countries and fight for revolution there.
jimj122680 3 years ago
Yes, but then you are a fascist and fascists round people up and deport them, or enslave them, or gas them. On moral grounds fascism is wrong, in my view, but also on practical grounds. Imagine if we started to deport "illegal alien squatters screaming for their imagined rights." Then we would have to deport all of the Minuteman members like you who don't know their history. But what other country would take them? Nazi Germany no longer exists, after all.
wudunion 3 years ago
I would let the Asian illegals stay because they are pretty good people. Asians are generally clean, have small families, value education greatly, have a very low crime rate, are upwardly mobile, learn Engish, etc.
On the other hand, Mexicans and Central Americans are trashy people. Who wants trash in their country? Nobody.
Whenever these people infest a decent U.S. neighborhood, it quickly turns into a 3rd world barrio. It's not just me who says this, everyone says it.
jimj122680 3 years ago
Oh, you forgot to say "Seig Heil."
wudunion 3 years ago 2
Thank you for standing up against facism.
ykmstudios 3 years ago
God (Who is a totally non-existant deity, until otherwise is proven, which it has not been)...You're aware that the only reason it turns into a third world barrio, is because of the quasi-fascists that do their best to deny them education, homes and, most important of all, a living wage? If they had all these, they wouldn't be criminals. Asian immigrants on the other hand come from developed countries, and most of them come because some corporations promotes them or such.
RasmusThorupKoudal 3 years ago
Hispanics have had 42 years of affirative action and they have wasted all those opportunities.
jimj122680 3 years ago
No, they rose up there because the american state thought it in their interest to educate them for the sake of the eventual plan to retake Vietnam, somewhat like the bay of pigs invasion. It just never happenend.
RasmusThorupKoudal 3 years ago
Oh sure that was the plan [laughing]. Yeah right... educated, successful, properous Vietnemese Americans are real likely candidates to want to take part in some supposed plan to "retake Vietnam". They are living a good life here, trust me, they don't want to "retake Vietnam" in any capacity. You are smoking crack if you believe that. Vietnemese rose up here because their culture values education very highly (unlike Mexicans). Deal with it you mother fucking bitch.
jimj122680 3 years ago
Being childish detracts from your attempt to persuade and it reflects negatively on those who share your ideological position.
warrensson 3 years ago 4

JohnR22926 3 years ago
Be honest, the reason why the auto sector is failing has more to do with the companies not being sell the crappy ass car they DESIGNED, not the work of the 8-5 workers. There also hemoraging money because the US has no public health care, therefore they have to pay the costs for the aging workforce. Here in Canada, we don't make the companies pay for that, therefore, were doing alright... now if they can only build sellable cars they wouldbe on easy street.
runnerpucci 3 years ago 3
runner: IMO price was a factor too.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
actually, it's because of free trade agreements wthat enabled companies to go overseas to exploit other workers BECAUSE they could no longer do so to the ones here. and to blame the teacher's union for the flaws in our education system is idiotic.
chilam8668 3 years ago
chilam: You need to do some research.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
Unions are good to a point, but they are human and they can get just as greedy as the corporations they are fighting against.
I basically agree with what you wrote about the teacher's unions.

Your logic is very strange to me.what i am hearing from you is,that i want to work myself to death(which i am sure is great for you and your family that has to suffer because you are laid up in a bed and they have to take care of you).you are a painter.what is killing you?the paint fumes?is your roller to heavy?try laying a couple hundred block a day. give me a break.you chose your job, as did i.there are millions of people out there worse off then both of us.make a decent point next time
brk2121 4 years ago
I could lay a couple of hundred block a day.I've laid lock block. All sizes. It's easy if you work 100 days a year. You obviously have never painted. I would love to see you move a 40' ladder all day.Work on a crew where you do everything yourself. Boy you know nothing about work. It is so obvious. Go home and lap your girlfriends pussy and get off you tube.
prrolg 4 years ago
i thought i said make a decent point this time?? first you know nothing about my personal work history. personally i make around 2000hrs a year. second if you know the proper way to move a ladder it is not hard at all. and for your comment "work on a CREW where you do everything yourself". i thought it was the union guys that"stand around like bums". sounds like thats your scab crew. telling me to go home and have sex with my girlfriend sounds like the smartest thing you have posted yet.
brk2121 4 years ago
Thanks for the ladder comment. It shows your ignorance. And the three of us do everything ourselves. Who sets up your scaffold bricklayer? Union rules say it can't be you.
