I'm really sorry that things went so very wrong with the Kent County SPCA in the end. Hopefully a good number of the dogs managed to get to rescue groups or adoptors.
I'm puzzled as to why they didn't try to coordinate with you more, especially on the medical aspect of things. It makes you wonder what their priorities really are, and if they take the "SPCA" in their name as seriously as they should.
Hopefully, I'm being too harsh, and this was all just a horrible mix-up.
Hi..thanks..no they didn't help and were very sneaky about it..they didn't want the media contacted when I told them I would have them out and did get them news stations and the local paper come out during the seizure..I had also contacted other humane groups when the original rescue group failed to provide the last leg of transport.
North Shore Animal League had agreed to come on the following Monday to take as many dogs as they could and bring a vet to innoculate all the dogs for rabies. They wouldn't let them even after they took them North Shore called them and told them they would take as many of the dogs as they needed they still said no..they put many of them to sleep for vairous excuses..
I also had someone that worked for the spca at the time take pictures of the dogs while in the care of the SPCA..they lived in horrible filthy conditions which I'm sure led to some getting illnesses. I still have those pictures anyone would be appalled at the lack of humanity.
An update on our rescues at the Kent County SPCA....as of Sept 9, 2007 they have euthanized 15 dogs. Most of these dogs were puppies under 3 months of age..there were not 15 adult dogs amoung the group in total which means they decided it was easier to KILL the puppies then spend time or effort to care for them..They claim they had mange..funny thing is I have hundreds of pictures of these dogs and puppies.
Including the day of arrival while bathing them and NONE of them HAD mange. Considering the conditions they were kept in at the shelter and YES I do have pictures that I will freely post after the trial so everyone can SEE how great this place is.
You can literally see some of the puppies in the pictures were beginning to loose hair some three weeks after they had been at the shelter. What would you expect to happen when we had just innocualted them a couple days before the SPCA seized them and they reinnoculated them again immediately after taking them for a second time in just days plus who knows what else they treated them with which way overstressed the poor puppies breaking down their immune system.
OF course there was gong to be repercussions in some form..mange is easily treated and had we been allowed to keep them and care for them they would NOT have gotten it. Why do these shelters think the first thing to do is bombard these animals with chemicals all at one time??? Common sense tells you it will overstress their immune system. The trauma of them getting to the shelter alone is stressful.
We didn't immediately begin innoculated the dogs for this very reason..we wanted to give them time to settle and destress from the move. We began with just a basic worming then waited a few days and began Vangard 5 vaccinations waited a few more days did heartworm testing and followed up with a three day broad spectrum wormer.(which they were seized after just one day of the medication).
WE also had several puppies on fluids for dehydration from their previous living conditions and many had to have anitbiotics for intestinal bacterial infections from Giardia and Coccidia which is prevenlant in the intestines of many animals mainly causing symptoms when the immune system becomes stressed. You surley don't have to be a rocket scientisit to figure this out. It is common sense. This is one main reasons these shelters loose so many young animals to illness.
I know who called...this person was one of our own rescue temas in Iowa...she thought she was calling them for help instead it backfired on her and all of us lost out especially the dogs..this is what happens when too many people get involved that don't really know about how things operate in other states..maybe in her state they would have helped but I already knew how the SPCA system is in our state and they aren;t always pro rescuers.
And to those people at the shelters that GAS their animals to death -- this is a HORRIBLE way to go!! PLease, if you HAVe to euthanize them, USE THE NEEDLE!!!!!!!!
These were all wonderful dogs in their each little way, you will never be forgotten, and I know even though you were wisked away from your guardian angel, You guys will be adopted, because Kam is your reason these puppies, had their second chance, even though they were taken away, they are not to face the gas chamber and WILL have their normal lives!
Thank you Kam for being the kind loving person, everyone tries to be!
My rescues were seized by the Kent County SPCA due to a paperwork legality during their transport up north. In the short time they were here I had spent so much time taken care of them I had gotten to know each and every one of their personalities. I named them all giving them an identity and enjoyed watching them become happy healthy dogs ready to find that forever home. I will never forget what these wonderful dogs taught me through all this!! You will never be forgotten!!
