  • This was extremely helpful, and the tips were very beneficial.

  • @meymey50 re your question about the shyness. i have that problem too. i'm in the news reporting field right now. i would recommend that you take an improvisation class, a beginner's one for sure (not the ones where you're with ppl wanting to become actors b/c the teachers will do heavy feedback)! it REALLY relaxes you and makes you feel really comfortable doing silly things.

  • I'm a journalist for print and I think you should also mention that this job never stops. You have to be ahead of time ALL THE TIME. You can't just go home and stop thinking or informing yourself about what's going on in the world. You can't just go on holiday and turn off everything for one week. You would miss a lot and this can be really embarassing when you come back and start your job again. This for me is really stressful - but nevertheless I love this job!

  • Good luck with your news career. My town is so small we thought Feng Shui was Hopsings uncle on Bonanza. News is cool.

  • the high school i am in has a tv station on campus. i anchor and I LOVE IT! the only reason i tried anchoring was because of you, i originally wanted to do cameras and all that backstage stuff... :)

  • you sound like a new caster..lol

    no wonder

  • Thank you so much for this video! I'm studying broadcast journalism right now and hoping to be a reporter! :-)

  • good advice!

  • My professor last semester told us that if you get a behind the scenes job, doing something small like being a production assistant for instance, you won't move up. She told us that people at stations lie and say you'll have a chance to move up in the future but you never will. What do you think about that? Should someone who wants to be a reporter accept a lower position if that's all that's available, or will they end up stuck like my professor said.

  • if you're looking for an internship in the field, but can't find one- then i'd recommend getting a part-time position like a production assistant at a tv station. i did that and have been for 2 years and i'm in my final year of college. within a month of doing that, they moved me up to a temporary assignment desk editor and now i'm a weekend assignment desk editor and i get to help write the show. it really gives you an insight on what goes into tv news so you can understand it better!

  • Really love your hair here.

  • You're great!

  • I really enjoyed this vlog and hearing your advice on the tv news business. And watching you on your station's news site interview people is really helpful, as we get to see you "in action." =)

  • u r awsome!!!

  • i really love this video i wish youtube was invented when i was a high school senior about to enter college. very informative.

  • I love the way you communicate. It's very calming for me as a listener. I'm from Sapin and I don't have to make any effort to unsderstand you. I congratulate you because, in my opinion, that is an important thing for a news reporter: to get understood easily.

I love any kind of video you do.

    XOXO

  • Thanks! You're amazing :)

  • Sorry for the installment comments. I hope I didn't annoy anybody. Haha. Anyway thanks Emily for the video! You're so great to watch.(:

  • But probably the most important aspect of being a reporter is being aware of current events - no matter what. It would really suck if, say, you went to interview some important personality and was not able to ask him/her a question because you didn't know about that issue. I cant tell you how many times Ive been reprimanded for this. Haha. Okay, so Im not the best reporter in the world.:P

  • I've been a TV reporter for almost a year now and I have to say, the job does let you experience different things almost every day. And you're right Emily, it tests your flexibility and willingness to do things you're not used to. It's a fun job, I'll give you that, but it IS terribly exhausting. Mentally-exhausting, for the most part. As a reporter you have to think critically to get a good story. You also have to think quickly, and creatively, especially for script-writing.

  • Thank you! As a teacher, I tell my students these things daily!

  • How important is physical appearance in your field of work? Do you have to be beautiful? Will beauty open doors compare to someone with an average look?

  • darn. i liked your makeup.

  • Thanks for the video. Great questions to ask yourself and great advice. :) Thanks for sharing.

  • Very inspirational! =D

  • lol yep I had to keep myself on track! :D

  • You are the greatest! I so enjoy all your vids, thank you for being you!

  • awesome video - it was very informative and interesting!

  • Great video as usual! I don't think a TV news career would suit me, although I think it would be a great career to have :D

  • Many of what you shared here applies to any career & jobs!! Thank you.

  • how much is the starting pay/salary for TV news reporter??

  • love your motivation :-) i'm also a hard worker (still studying)! love your attitude about that :) xxx

  • This is very helpful for people who are interested in this field. Hearing from someone rather than just a book or website is soo much more tangible. IMO :P As usual...great job!!

  • omg i have been waiting for this video for so long! thank you so so so much for doing this for ppl like me;) this helps a lot!!<3<3

  • Interesting information. Thank you!

  • really helpful!

-the demand for these jobs aren't too high, so a "back-up" plan is important to keep in mind. i thought it was great that you pointed out that you have to work your way up

-also i think you have to be articulate and have a polished look, which obviously you have.

  • :) Thank you for your honesty in this video. I've gradueted from law school 5 months ago and I work in an attorney's office- the thing whith starting from somewhere is true in every profession I think. You have to start somewhere to learn, prove yourself and then continue to hte next level! Thanks for your vid!:)

  • Hey Emily, I think you do a great job on the news. I live here in central Illinois and watch the news every morning( have to know what the weather is gonna be like!). ch.3 news! xx

  • Hi!! I don't know if you're in the Champaign area- but do you ever watch Kalee do the weather? she's one of my best friends!

  • well i live around the Galesburg area and travel back and forth to Sterling.winter was bad this year, so watching the weather is a must! You have such a sweet personality that i bet your bf's with everyone there. xx

  • LOVE your hair and makeup in this vid!!

  • Can you do a tutorial on how you do your hair? It is gorgeous. I have long, dark hair and don't know how to do anything with it.

  • i am not interested in a tv news career. but for people who are, this is a really good video. you gave a lot of great examples and tips. even before you posted this video and watching your past videos, i always thought you had a good voice, a voice people would listen to on t.v.

  • I LOVE YOUR HAIR! I'm not going into the news industry but it was great listening to your perspective.

  • OMG. your so pretty, like gorgeous. like wow! lol

  • Emily thanks for letting us know you even better. I think its so sweet of you trying to help other people that might want to be in the same field your in. =)

  • You are the best!

  • i really like it!! :)

  • my son wants to be a reporter so bad....I think he'll be good at it....he's always been nosey and loves to ask people questions..lol....he loves people and I swear he has not 1 shy bone in his body...oh and he LOVES attention..hmm wonder where he got that from lol...we call him geraldo rivera because he always has a camera with him and a breaking news to share lol

  • wow! i think this vid will be SO helpful for the ppl interested in this field b/c you had many good tips and ideas to think about and spoke from experience. it's esp admirable that you worked from the bottom-up. LOL i'll admit, im envious of you emily;P i think you're SO successful for a 25yo (same age as me & still figuring what i want to do) w/ having a husband, good job, the yt, etc. congrats:)))

  • That was great, Emily. Thank you for sharing!

  • sorry about that it was my computer making the noise..

  • whats the in the background?? ur really pretty..

  • You are so intelligent. I really admire that. Girl Power all the way! Brains and beauty! I love this video because it speaks volumes. Not only for communication majors, but for a wide range of other majors. I'm a management major and I can relate to your tips. It works with just about anything anyone wants to do with their life and career goals. Hard work, and passion for what you want to do. If a person gives up easily without a fight, then that might not be the path for them.

  • This is such an informative video, thanks =]

  • I totally agree with what you're saying,I use these philosophies in my film career. Iwouldalso add develop a thick skin it's key in the entertainment industyr.Emily you are so wise girl, this vid will help alot of people.

  • oh absolutely. I wish I would've included that- you have to have a thick skin and be able to constructive and NOT constructive criticism and move on. maybe I'll have to make another vid for that LOL

  • Couldn't agree more.I loved this vid it was unique ,I would definatly say do more of them.I meant to say I would also like to add, like I also think.... Keep the great vids up !

  • I love when you slip into news anchor mode when doing these videos. It's neat to see that it's a cultivated skill.

  • omg one time i randomly ran up to people asking them if wearing shorts and long sleves were weird for a bet i made with some friends lol :-) i really want to be a reporter!!!!but im 14 so ill have my time when it comes

  • aw thanks! I'm going to try to post more of them soon- i just haven't come up with a good way to transfer there from work to my computer here at home- we don't always record on the whole newscast. I'll work on it though!!

  • im starting college soon, what type of computer do you reccomend? a macbook or an imac desktop? i want to be a reporter/journalist but im really shy, do you know how to build up confidence? thanks for the tips!!!

  • I may not have the aspiration to become a reporter, but I still really enjoyed watching this video :) It was very insightful!

    Thanks!

  • I've wanted to be a reporter since I was little. Now that I'm in my last semester of journalism school, I can't wait to give my tripod and camera back to the program. It is a disaster! Unless you are into working around the clock with major frustrations and very little pay, I'd consider another field. Thanks for the insight :)

  • do you mean you didnt like reporting? what are you pursuing now? im starting college in the fall and some insight would be great!

    thanks! ^_^

  • Great video. I love how you explain everything. :)

  • Thanks for making this. I always wanted to be a news reporter since i was a little girl. And i look up to you so much!! You are truly an amazing role model for girls. Please reply.

  • Very informative! I am not interested in reporter career, but still the video was so interesting. I learned a lot. Thank you!

  • I wanted to add that i totally agree on working your way up. I used to think that i would be the top doctor right away, but i have learned. I also believe in internship. I am working in a hospital and i don't get paid, but i believe that this experience gives me so much and i get to know the job and the little details behind it.

This was a great video and i think that so many people can relate to this. Every career need dedication and not giving up. Thank you for being an inspiration!

  • I love your attitude about working your way up. Too many young people now and days expect success to be handed to them. I think you learn to appreciate something when you work for it.

  • Great video! First comment. I love your videos.
