Photoshop Black and White Conversion

I don't understand why people go through all of this to de-color an image.. Just go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.. bada bing, bada boom.. takes 3 seconds.

Channel Mixer - Monochrome is a quicker way to do that last step that you did (adusting the brightness of each red/green/blue channel when rendered in black and white) and it gives you the most control. Then go into curves after that and adjust.
