I wash some of my fruits and vegetables in water containing bleach and baking soda. The bleach kills the germs and the baking soda cleans away some of the wax and pesticides. I just wash them in water if I will peel them and throw away the skin.

I wash my fruit and vegetables not only to remove the chemicals (which I understand are plentiful), but also to remove any dirt that may still be on them! Especially with carrots (even ready-to-eat), I feel that rinsing them off makes them come back to life.

rutabaga is actually good raw, you should try it, it is related to cabbage, and it tastes similar

there are three things to worry about: dirt you can chew, pesticide, and bacteria.

it is obvious when you need to wash dirt.

when you need to wash pesticide is not obvious, but studies show that even machine-washed plants still have pesticide, so washing it again doesnt really help.

and washing bacteria works, but there usually isnt bacteria, so usually we dont wash for this. but when we are wrong, like when the spinach contamination happens, we can get sick.

The white carrot looking veg is a parsnip :o) and the other one you got from the shop is sweed not a turnip (in the UK) a sweed has an orange ish inside and a purple/grean/white outside and turnip is white inside with a white and may be white greeninsh outside. :o). Hope that helps.

You should always wash your vegetables and fruits. We had a big problem with greens here in California a few years ago. There was a cattle ranch next to some farm fields and there was cross contamination with the water supply. I wash everything now.
