HBO are now overshadowed by Showtime in my view. Soprano's & Six Feet Under were great but HBO have failed to reach the high standards and are now not as good as Showtime. Just my ten cents worth.

The Wire = one of the best series ever. The Sopranos and Deadwood were pretty damn entertaining too, but have nothing on The Wire.

"Rome" was a good show but it was simply too expensive at $100 million/season. "Game of Thrones" by comparison (a far greater show, IMHO) cost about $60 million/season.

Right now, I'd put HBO's current line-up of GoT, Boardwalk Empire, and Treme up against any shows that they've done in the past. Right now is HBO's Golden Age.

i just finished watching deadwood. All that build up and then they cancelled it.. All they needed was a final epsiode with a big massacre or something to put my mind at ease.. lol

Deadwood, Rome, The Wire, Sopranos, all the best of HBO.. Now what do we have, True Blood, Entourage, Hung, all of which are falling off the wagon hardcore.. Entourage used to be a good show, but it has gone to shit. I really wish HBO would make the good stuff again!

@mofobishop you forgot to mention Carnivale along with thise other HBO classics. Boardwalk Empire is probably the best show to come around HBO for awhile. BTW- HBO also turned down Mad Men as a show for their network. To me, AMC has 3 amazing shows, Mad Men/Breaking Bad/Walking Dead, and Showcase has Dexter, HBO's slipping.

I am an absolute huge fan of the series Rome, even though it ended with 2 seasons. But what I hope for is with all this encouragement from fans for all these various series from HBO that they bring them back (Mostly Rome!!!). It was made amazingly and hope to see season 3 soon.

@romefandonald Rome is a fantastic show, but it's not coming back and it shouldn't come back. All that stuff that happened at the end of Season 2 was supposed to happen in seasons 3 and 4. They found out they were being canceled while writing season 2 and tried to fit like three seasons into one. Going back now would be kind of pointless.

Here's Entourage in a nutshell: Everyone's rollin' in dough but pisses and moans over how life isn't fair. "Oh no, I'm a hugely famous actor and this girl didn't want to date me. I will spend the rest of the episode sitting on the couch and destroying the plotline with my pissing and moaning. Then, we'll all have a sexually ambiguous cool time at some posh club." Yep...now go spend that time doing something usefull, rather than rot to that show.

wow, i completely disagree astrofunkyness. i think hbo has the most brilliant cable shows on the air, and not showtime. i like dexter and loved huff, (hate weeds) so can you really beat entourage, curb your enthusiasm, and flight of the conchords? (i would mention the sopranos and rome and extras but they're gone now)
