I love all this bitching... Right, if its a British style brass band there are NO trumpets. Only cornets. In some American Brass bands they use trumpets instead. British style also don't use French horns, they use tenor horns.
@melove7up I'm afraid I disagree with you there but each too their own :) You should have a listen too this Vienna Horns-director's cut-pirates of the Caribbean. Is brilliant and might change your mind :)
Love this song! Our brass band plays it a lot of the time, and it's just so fun to play. Your version seems more jazzed-up than ours though :(
Also, well done on that bit at about 0:48. In the piece we have, it's the solo cornet section that plays it, and I don't think anyone really appreciates exactly how hard it is, even though it sounds simple.
@stu1552 Cornet is like a Trumpet. There is a difference but not much. I play Euphonium and everyone calls it a baritone. Does it really matter? Yes in away. But you can replace a trombone with a baritone yet not a Euphonium. And I have played in brass bands with Trumpets. So before you go off thinking your always right maybe you should shove it.
@wilshire1992 well i play in a british-style brass band (which only have conical bore instruments apart from trombone)- i dont know if your band has a different format but we have a traditional british one- see grimethorpe colliery and Black dyke Mills-and the only reason why u can replace trombones with baritones is because they are the closest thing as they are more of a cylindrical bore instrument than a euphonium- so maybe u should play in some higher level bands before u tell me to shove it
@pianogenius2006 On cameras like this they pick up the Xylophone more. Our band our Xylophone was quite but you can hear it over the band on the recording.
brass bands use cornets traditionaly, sometimes trumpets are used to show-boat their lead cornet player or in a jazzy rendition , the trumpet is only used in a brass band as a status symbol for the lead cornet player especialy when the sop* cornet has a crazy counter harmony that over powers everyone else xD ....but who knows,,,,every band is different,,, not everyone sticks to tradition :P

U guys...cornets are almost exactly the same as trumpets just a bit smaller...take it from i play the trumpet and my teacher plays the cornet and ive seen the pocket trumpet its a very small version of a trumpet...yes these are all brass instruments...and if u listen closely u can cleary hear those trumpets
ummm trumpets are not nearly exactly the same as cornets if they were then there wouldnt be any point in making both of them. duhhh! im a grade 8 trumpet and cornet player. cornets have a softer tone than trumpets and trumpets are easyer to play than cornet coz it has less tubingg to go thru hence the harsh sound and the higher notes and a pocket trumpet is in a completely diff key to a Bb trumpet and Bb cornett.i suggest you get a new trumpet teacher coz your teacher obviously knows nothinggg.
right i have to point out what many people are saying
THERE ARE NO TRUMPETS IN A BRASS BAND!!!!!!!!
take it from a grade 8 trumpet and cornet player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
listen to what ive sed!!!! NO TRUMPETS IN BRASS BAND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT OBVIOUSLY and this band isnt good for the age these people are i agree :)
take youngblood brass band, two trumpets. a normal british brass band. loads a trumpets and cornets. in other words, there are trumpets in brass bands
ummm there arn't supposed to be trumpets in a brass band !!!!! listen to what im saying ive played trumpet and cornet for 10 years i know what im talking about so no there is not!! are you a brass playerrr coz if you are then your pretty thick then. cornets for brass band trumpets for orchestras!!!! listen you fool..... youngblood brass band is stupid for having trumpets in it thats probably why they are crap!
youngblood isn't a brass band for one it has a tenor sax and an Mc/rap .. and this its a terrible band i would no ..i play for South Yorkshire police brass band and also renegade brass band (which is like youngblood) and no by the ruling of the British brass bands association there are not meant to be trumpets in brass bands has they are from the USA
I've played this exact arrangement with my brass band. I think it's a good performance. I do understand why "CriticalNin3R" would mistake those cornets for trumpets, cause they did sound like that. and I have to agree with noofnoof3112's remark about trumpets:P
For the dimbo's who use the F word if your critism of music is as good as your vocabulary, a word of advice wash your mouth out and then shut it up. This band in my opinion is a pleasure to listen to.
for an adult brass band this is pretty unimpressive. The dynamics are weak they never build. the trumpet players solo was ruined by taking a breath 2 measures and 2 counts in,not counting pickups its only 4 measures. Were was the double tounging on the to the pirate cave melody. Im in high school and we double tongued that part in a field show. shits weak!
As a player in a second section brass band, I have to say this is not good. The timing at the beginning is shoddy and the dynamic range of the piece is limited. And i agree with nikkiroanne - theyre cornets not trumpets!
Deffinately need to back off on the trumpets, and practice that part over and over again before you can play this. Those tops notes are not coming out clean, and the tonguing sounds a little mushed. Ok, and for the record when you have a trumpet soloing you need the resonance where it should be, that is the main point of that music. i also played this in eight grade. But good work over all, the speed is at the exact par, but work on it till it hurts.
Don't forget the "cornets" are facing the camera so the sound will slightly over power the others as the sound is being projected in a different direction.
im a trumpet player, and i will just say there is too much trumpet, if you backed them off and brought out the low and middle end it would be so much better...i still enjoyed it though
but it sounds tinny because there's no reverb!! it should be in some concert hall, theatre or something....it really needs more reverb nothing anyone can do though i suppose!

The band i'm playing is playing this and we play this like WAY better then this band i mean we play it REALLY good i mean REALLY good and this just sounds so bad. My brass band played this arrangement too... it seems like this particular arrangement became really popular with a lot of brass & concert bands when the most recent Pirates movie came out.
Reasonably well performed here, although I must admit some parts would sound better played slightly faster than the tempo this band played it at.
i wish i had a brass band near me that i could join overall it was awesome but the lead trumpet needs to work on his high notes he fell off a few times
This one is Ted Rickett's arrangement for Concert Band (not one of the best arrangements, in my opinion), but re-written for Brass Band by John Blanken.

So you say you can do it better? Post your own video and let's see.

A proper brass band doesn't have trumpets but if it's just a brass ensemble then you can have trumpets and french horns etc

Blaven233 2 years ago 2
and to point out the trumpet/cornet issue... from a musician who has lived and played in Liverpool, Vancouver and California...
in the US true brass band dosent exist and trumpet is the primary soprano voiced brass used,
if there is a brass ensemble it is 90% played on a Bb or C trumpet, some challengeing parts on a D or Eb trumpet.
the Cornet is reguarded as a colour instrument used mainly in jazz for the warmer, richer sound
littlephoenix1115 2 years ago
the Eb cornet sounds really tired, especially up there in the hits
