  • The people who don't have respect don't like football, they just like shouting and having a go at people

  • Yeah, being a ref is stressful enough without these kinds of jerks (used to be one but quit after 3 years), The ref can't see everything, but so long as he keeps the game going, people safe and sticks to his guns while doing his best, then that is the kind of ref I like playing with. Also, a note to everyone including referees, the ref has the power to kick people out and away from the game, that includes the coaches AND the spectators.

  • I have so many friends now that have turned to Rugby because of the respect thing ..Nothing on the TV a few months back so thought i'd try and watch the football .. first few seconds a guy takes a dive .... next few minutes full of guys screaming at the ref .. next shot shows a guy spitting all over the place and swearing .. off it went !!

I took my young daughters to the Saracans recently and they both asked me why the fans wernt a bunch of idiots like the football fans .. says a lot ...

  • I totally agree with this video but I also think they could use more video replay technology to help their work, that will maybe weed out a part of people who are being disrespectful. Sure there are people who will remain disrespectful and deny the truth even if it sits right under their nose.

  • damn right you're losing refs. this sort of lack of respect is why I wont ever become a sunday league ref, a teacher, a policeman, or anything similar that invites abuse. if people are going to treat you like this (and they are in 2011) then let some other idiot do the job.

  • fantastic video , just wished all these mugs who go to kids football watched this before they start shouting there mouths off. its why we have such a shit england football team .it why all the great kids have quit so they have not got to listen to abuse

  • @1caruana why do you use swear words? my son was reading your comment.

  • Wow parent was shouting at players and the ref! :0

  • refreeing is one thing that does not turn me on at all. even if nobody was shouting at me, i wouldnt get any joy running around the pitch without kicking the ball. if i was a ref i would tackle some players (de jong, barton, terry and all the chelsea players) from behind. i wouldnt be able to resist that.

  • All refs should carry round details of the next local course run by the RA around on the pitch on with. Any mug who gives us any abuse we just give them that card and make then sign up.

Anyone who gives me abuse is straight to the car park and I don't play until they are gone!

  • @TheReesyboy

Spot on fella...there is one ref on the pitch and 20 odd referees in the crowd who don't know the rules of the game properly !

  • This advert isn't played enough on television in my opinion

  • Ray Winstone: so hard he scares the shit out of his OWN DANG SELF

  • @Applemask HA! He's the only one that could!

  • LOL i have justed passed my referees course and i can see what im gonna get, well im gonna make sure that Ray Winstone is never at my games XD

  • I'm a level 8 ref in bedfordshire, and compared to one guy I had, this guys a pussy cat. Seriously though, next time you shout: 'REF!' just think, are you able to meorise all 18 laws?

  • i am also a ref you always get 1 parent like this they dont know how hard the game is

  • I think a young referee should be playing the part because its very rare you get an adult referee on a Mini-soccer match this day and age. It probley would of had a better impact, not saying aint had a change on the game already i just think it would make people realise more what is going on within the game!

  • I'm a ref, but in two and a half years I've only ever had one person like that.

Some teams are fantastic, one game I did, manager told me before the game he had taught all his players to respect the ref. I gave 2 penalties against them that game, both very close decisions, no moaning no abuse, manager even said well done to me at the end. Contrast that with the other team, one stonewall penalty against them, managers comes onto the pitch at the end insulting me, had to be physically restrained.

  • as a manager of a sunday league side who has reffed i make sure my players toe the line with regards decisions. anyone with an attitude can F*ck right off as far as im concerned.

  • The sad thing is, there are actual mugs who shouts at 10 year old kids because he was too crap to become a player.

  • I suggest they just do what they did in "The Search For Bobby Fischer" where they locked the parents in the basement....

  • just pulled my son off a select team this year before the season began b/c of what I saw in tryouts and our discussion on the phone! THIS....is what I saw in him and did NOT want to kill my son's spirit and love of the game. I'd rather him play "down". Is it really playing DOWN? Or playing UP...if they are loving the game? I think we need a better sifting system for coaches! THAT is how we will protect our kids and refs!

  • @jawise86 shouting at your kids from 3 yards away, making him feel ashamed and probably mocked by his team-mates, is going to make him love the game? Do me a flavour....

  • @JackUnionfy what flavour????? I think you misunderstand me? shouting at them from 3 yards away is NOT going to give them love of the game! That is my very point. I would rather my kids play on a differnent, but "worse" team, rather than have their spirit hurt by this kind of behaviour. Don't be a h8er. :)

  • @jawise86 Ah gotcha, i misinterpreted, looks like we share the same view - this is a good thing. My apologies.

  • @JackUnionfy no worries! We def share the same views! My sons ref as well as PLAY, and I when I see people like that, I want to go up and kick their TEETH IN! I mean, this is little people REC! not world cup! And when my 12 yr old REF is getting yelled at by big adults like that, the protective instincts come out! Cheers!

  • "Jack the biscuit", I'll have to remember to use that one. :)

  • We need something like this for hockey as well. I may be guilty as well.

  • whos the f....n daddy naaaa son . i love ray winstone .. top man

  • He is a Hammer for life

    "I'm forever blowing bubbles

    pretty bubbles in the air"

  • can i download this anywhere?

  • jack the buiscuit lol

  • He's actually a west ham fan

  • I'm a referee and yes this should be stopped i have reffed kids who are so frightened to kick the ball as there are dads like that on the sideline, and yes it's just awful i fully back this campain 110%

  • As a FA coach ive seen this many times, its disgusting and shameful

  • looooooooooooooooooool.........this is so funny..."u mug"

  • Found out after a match this week that a kid on the otherside's grandad was telling his grandson to break my 7 year old son's legs ...

  • its discusting isnt we need to work on respect we cant expect our younger generation with the younger generation learniing off the olders ..plus the poor refs

  • We need a Ray Winestone at every match. The rational, well spoken one in the suit, not the loose cannon in the traksuit.

He is a calming influence but also strikes fear into the eye of any mug telling young kids to "get into him! FUCK HIM UP!"

  • ray winstone is the man and one of englands best actors

  • WOW RAY WINSTONE HAS A TWIN BROTHER....

    joking im not that stupid

  • What would happen if the overreacting one fought the cool calm collected one?

  • Excellent performances by Ray Winstone - both of them.

I heard about this on the BBC yesterday. The problem isn't confined to English soccer alone. Here in Aus we have similar stories in the paper pretty regularly.

This excellent clip ought to be compulsory viewing in every sports club. Especially junior leagues where the parents, just like this berk here, turn a weekend game into a form of torture.

  • Sponsored by Common Purpose.

  • is he off sexy beast?

  • Gin, Checkmate and Yatzee my friend.

  • Yes, althoug he is probably best known for his early role in the film 'scum'.

  • LOL - he looks like the exact manager who yelled at me before 'referee, referee, how many more times until this goon breaks somebody's leg?'

    My best mate ^_^

  • if i was on the pitch and the old man was going shouting at me i swear i would hack him and break his leg

im pretty sure the kids on the ad would love to if it were real life

  • Great Video, makes you think about what you are like yourself

  • This Advert is Def Effective :) i Like it.

  • somtimes the ref has sent parents and managers off

this guy sounds like my dad he shouts at me and somtimes the ref

  • great vid i played sunday league for 4 years now and parents give the ref loads and somtimes even the players

i have seen a ref hand out 4 red cards in a game that i played in the game got very dirty and takles where goin in left and right

  • Terrific performance and so like real footy matches that I've been to. Trouble is would the idiots that I've seen on the sidelines recognise themselves? probably not. Big respect to refs though.

  • i don't even like football but this is definitely one of its major problems. good video/message

  • winstone is the daddy...

  • hahahaha

  • Great stuff going straight on our footy site, reminds me of several of our league coaches.

  • Quite powerful actually....saw it on the TV a few days ago. I think this is a message for more than just respect for the ref....but also respect for your fellow man.

  • I love this ad. Great script. It's brilliant.

  • ray winstone is the man and an amazing actor and a propper geeza, this advert is so powerful when the noise stops and then the pitch is empty

  • I think the video is good I am a high level football referee and instructor of officials and I may use this clip in training . Good job to the FA USSF needs to act on the problem

  • I am a ref and get dis every week

  • @extrarandom12345 i am a ref too and even the people are like "the bad Ray" a love to be a ref because I love the game and I don´t mind what these really "intelligent fans" think and say :) am I right? :)

  • @Sudca6666 im a ref for indoor and outdoor too wheni see pepole like that i tend to get nervase and that really ruins my game for me

  • its well moving and effective. just like my average sunday at my little bros matches well not that bad

  • Being a ref is harder than you think, they should make it like rugby and make the players and fans respect the ref, a load of the people who moan and complain about the refs wouldnt last one minute doing it.

  • My Old Man told me, in Rugby, the Ref's 'word' was final....If you notice, they NEVER kick up a stink, they take it, and they sod off the Pitch...no nonsense.

  • yea i agree with ya

  • Used to be true. I've noticed complaints and arguing starting to creep into rugby too recently.

  • The angry dad in this vid is about as funny as they get :D

You facking mag....you tasty li'ul caaaaaaaaaant.

I'm orf to listen to me chaz and dayve and eat some jellied eels, pie, mash and liquor me old fackin' choina

    :D

  • No - not funny - I've been on the touchline and I've heard much worse than that

  • Nice one Ray for getting involved on an important topic. Professionals on TV acting disgracefully to the ref & modern football allowing cheats to prosper (Makelele, Rivaldo, Drogba etc... ) are the real issue though. FA's role should be to promote good role models & ensure that cheats (diving, time wasting & over acting are CHEATING not 'gamesmanship') do not prosper from it.

Simple solution: implement video refereeing & punish players that cheat - the beautiful game will be better off for it

  • No thanks to video refing. Yes please to stronger punishments for cheating. Cheats should be punished and then kids will learn that cheats really do not prosper. Maradona should not have been able to play for the rest of the 1986 tournament.

  • Where the fuck was the bad language?

  • Has Danny Baker seen this?

    Any comments from him?

  • Ray Winstone, spot on.. as for the muppet next him on the left? dummy

  • if ray winstone was actually like that when i was reffing i wud shat myself lol

  • They got the right man for the job good vid

  • Good video, should hopefully get a message across to some muppets out there, Ray Winstone is also brilliant in it.

  • Great video, Hopefully i wont have to abandon any matches due to abuse

  • when ray winstone does an advert like this this you think maybe there is a chance people will take note'' including senior players who make life a misery for the ref....i have seen a lot as a goalkeeper for 30yrs..every game we had i would say to the players remember the ref is someones husband and someones father....they still gave him hell....but i never did...i let him have my orange at half time..and told him not to listen to those nasty comments about his wife..

  • This advert couldnt be any closer to the truth. Full Respect to Ray.

  • ray winstone is fuking awsome!!!!

  • come on man respect them for once the are human like us they do make mistakes man come its a man that respects people

  • it's their job not to make mistakes

  • yea we no but your tellin me that ya never made a mistake in ya life

    every ones the same

  • my mistakes don't potentially affect the outcome of a game..it's understandable when people get mad. i can understand at a level like this where kids are involved but when your team might be knocked out of a competition or even relegated then i can see why people get angree

  • yea i agree with you i do it my self 2 ref`s i think every one does but i think they should be shown some respect like the ref on the video because hes given up his saterday for what think it about £15 they get paid for one day so they could get a bit more respect

  • It is a part of everybody's job not to make mistakes. You mug!

  • About time too!

  • Good stuff chaps! I'm 29... still remember the muppets who shouted stuff during football games. We were children for crying out loud!!! Nice one.

  • That's good, that. Well done Ray!
