You should make a robot that as it's moving around an area, draws up a virtual map of the area so It run into walls. But when it does, it just tells the sensor not to go there. Or is that what this is doing? I can't tell.

Yes, and it already exist in universities in Japan, Europe, US and Australia. This videos is a No-Microchip robot that depends on circuit and switch. If the robot had a microchip and camera, it can learn from it's surroundings such as Tokyo University Robot.
