No, this would be earlier. It was 1984 that the Lange government came to power. Anyway didn't Douglas/Prebble kill off PostBank? I remember in the earlier 80's having a PostBank account operated through the primary school I was going to at the time.....around 1987 or 88 ANZ took over the account.
As for interest rates of the 80's, they went through the roof shortly after the start of the Lange government when our country's credit rating dropped.....so reform had to be made.
@timarulad As for interest rates, they went up around the world not just NZ - as a result of the Reagan/Volcker US govt tightening monetary policy to control inflation - the US$ is regarded as the risk free rate... for NZ and most other western countries this meant 8% to 20% interest rate hikes! Lets hope history doesnt repeat...
Sorry, I am wrong about when ANZ took over the Postank accounts, I remember still going to the post office as late as 1991. After that I stopped using the account but never closed it...I must still have a little money in that account. I must look into that :-)
Still doesn't change the fact that I know my video clip to be from before 1987.
Thanks. The thing about these news headlines is that they were nothing special at the time. I just happened to find it on a very old video cassette that I had....wish I had more of them.
Yeah that is the fun part! I love watching old news clips and or reading an old newspaper article! It is like a time capsule. When my great grandmother passed away she had furniture with drawers lined in newspaper from the 1920's. It was neat going through the headlines and sales at the time. So...post more if you have them! :)
omg 8 to 20 % interests rate hike in mortgages lol and he said it like he was reading the weather

@WoodsJulie In an earlier comment, someone named him as Robin Kora. This sounds right to me, but I can't 100% guarantee that.

This would be sometime after 1987. PostBank was one of the Douglas/Prebble reforms of that time.

Nice one! That's Robin Kora.
He got a lot of stick because of his pronunciation, at the time, but I've seen and heard a lot worse.
