Dr. Sagan was one of the early (publicly) supporters of Global Warming and the proposition that the build-up of CO2, methane and refrigerant gases in the atmosphere could lead to a cataclysmic rise in the earth's temperature.

It just seems obvious to me that the planet cannot continue going round and round without fluctuations in its orbit, any slight fluctuation and the planet will either heat up or cool down, and you can also take in to account the effects of the other planets
