So nice to see an amazingly skilled guitarist that isn't thrashing the hell out of a guitar or trying to show off. The subtlety and skill in the creation of this guys beautiful soundscape is just stunning !! To my mind, skill is one part of music, Imagination is the greater part. Lots of people out there very skilled, but just copy other peoples music.
Having said that, anyone who can find pleasure in whatever music they play, good luck to em. It's all good
@SONGSTICKS i complety agree with you. Imagination is the greater part of musical writing. you can obtain a musical piece only with simple musical idea but together it can turns into magical piece.Just look into akira yamaoka's work ( Silent Hill's music writter ) his song arent complex, it's simple melodies but all flooded together it becomes beautiful art.
@SONGSTICKS I compose and the best part of it it's when you write something that you've never heard in you own existence and not even a hint to something else, it's truly a gift :) if you mind go listen to my ''Sanctuary'' piece. these is some lack about it like Video/sound quality and at the time i did not master the song entirely but i think you catch the color/mood. enjoy !
I also noticed your comments about inner wounds etc.
My best friend Neil has inner wounds from his childhood that he expresses in his lyrics when we make music together. We never rehearse, we just roll some ideas around, then start playing and see what comes. Neil makes up the lyrics on the fly and they usually come from a deep place. Have a listen to our "give me back my freedom" track and see what you think?
NO NO NO NO, Andy Mckee is still the god of acoustic guitar hahaha! No but him and Erik have a very different sound! Erik has this great spiritual sound that i adore like hell, but i just think Andy is better at melodies! But both of them... fuck sake man, couldn't we just whipe out MTV and VH1 and put on a 24/7 channel with their music!?
This song is truly amazing. What he does here with his left hand is "do-able" enough for a skilled technician with much practice (save the "millimeter harmonic" which may take a little more time to get right), but what he does with his right hand in this song is god-like. Hours upon days upon months of practice to do it like that. Well done sir!
Paco is the best flamenco guitar there is rly i think i can be brave enough to say the best in history. Segovia yes yes but paco is better imo. Anyway erik is in a league of his own don ross and mckee are very good but eriks music has more depth to it:)
Tommy emanuel?thanks Barry....Im just discovering you and erik....thankful too...you guys are inspiring...I am curious and delving a little in hedges...cant believe I missed him too.....William
better is probably not the word, but he hears music in a totally different light compared to other modern fingerstyle players. do I see his name next to Hedges in changing this genre of music...............
@avxnce Nope. This one IS Pandora's Box. Look at videos of Erik playing both songs live. I can't remember what service it is, but Erik's album was for sale somewhere other than his website and iTunes, and the names of the songs are mixed up. Where did you get the album?
@junaids23 So dont bother arguing with that other kid. Like i said, just enjoy the music. I smoke a bowl, sit in my room and blast this shit and it gives me chills lol. Try it sometime its awesome:]
I just noticed that Erik's right arm moving back and forth across the body of his guitar between percussion and melody actually provides a subtle maraca/tambourine sound. I thought it was just to keep his rhythm. There's so much to listen to in each of Erik's songs.
this guy is actually the most amazing soloist ive ever heard every little note pop and slap is so well crafted with so much passion and love for his music he deserves a nice big hug
I saw this guy last Friday on Later With Jools Holland. I've been addicted to his music ever since. If I could play guitar half as good as he can I'd be a very happy man!
It will be tabbed eventually so for the moment you'll have to made do with the videos. If you combine this video and the live in Reunion Island one for the very end, you can figure it out but be warned, it can sound like a load of open strumming, I dunno how Erik hits just the right notes without sounding everything in this song :P
@barrywalsh789 ...Erik put the tab up on his website recently for purchase/download in .pdf. Can anyone tell me how to do the squeal technique he uses at about 35 seconds in (and a few more times throughout)? I know its a bend, but I can't get it sound quite as intense as his...is there some kind of pinch or harmonic too?
@theguitarchris123 It's a harmonic that he calls "The Millimeter" because if you miss the sweet spot by about a millimeter, it doesn't work. To hit it, with your left hand, press down on the ninth fret on the second string and with the right, you do a one-hand harmonic on the same string near the bridge. You'll have to find it yourself and memorize it. Usually, it's somewhere over the bottom of the sound hole...
to manikwest > Its not about comparing Andy McKee to Erik Mongrain. Thats the problem with this country, everything is a competition. Why can't you appreciate Erik for his work and Andy for his?
I was simply pointing out that far me personally I LIKE HIS STYLE MORE. It is not about competition at all, I love Andy McKee's work, but it is heavily influenced by Don Ross.
Erik for me is more original that's all.
Next time I will make sure and clarify everything for you......lol
