I know some Led Zep and Robert Plant fans can't stand Coverdale, but damn, he rips it vocally on this song, not sure what some of you are talking about.

the reason that Coverdale sticks to rock is because he'd look like an idiot trying to do what Plant does now... I like Coverdale as a vocalist but he absolutely BUTCHERED this song.

David is a plant poser but besides that i cant lie his voice is one of the best in rock, but he TRIES to EVERYTHING from plant. which i find funny, but hes fucking good at it! mostly.

Plant's voice "soars like no other"? Huh? I suggest you come out from your country backwater and check out a guy called Steve Perry some time. That nonsense aside, a lot of people are comparing Plant against Coverdale, blah blah. To me they are both enjoyable, but if there is going to be a competition about it, at least give Coverdale some credit for sticking to ROCK! Nuff said!

@MrAttPatt Plant is bluegrass/alternative country now. Coverdale Page album and tour were all about hard rock and Whitesnake is a kick ass band even now. Respect for staying a rock n' roller David.

Normally reserved for classical voice: suspect Coverdale's tessitura is in the baritone range and that his screeches are a head/falsetto range, whereas Plant's tessitura is a low-tenor range. Plant can belt in the tenor mid-high range, and uses falsetto very sparingly. So to think of it this way... Coverdale more often sings lower and higher than Plant, but Plant's voice is a more "pure" voice that fills out the in-between.. although he does go into baritone and falsetto on occasion.

I dont get it, Coverdale should be able to sing Led Zeppelin songs and sound good because he is awesome on his own stuff but when he tries to sing the Zep stuff he sounds all screetchy, screemy and like every other idiot he tries to sing it. Plants voice gets high but not screetchy like Coverdale's. Plant has that high soaring quality to his voice just no other singer has plus I just don't think Coverdale understands Zeppelins music or lyrics. He is too much of a simple macho rock star poseur

This song is great listen to the version on Led Zeppelin DVD... this version has pour soundquality I have a lot better versions of this song by David & Jimmy... The slide licks, drums and vocals are killer!!! The best Zep song next to Achilles Last Stand and Stairway To Heaven!!! So fucking dramatic... In My Time Of Dying is the BEST!!!!!!!

@physical75inthelight DC can sing but beside that he can growl and scream as hell.... Robert Plant is able only to sing clean now. His chest lows and highs were blowed around mid 70's... Though Plant's chords were the best thing in the world on Led Zeppelin I to IV... So David always will be number 2 I guess...

As someone who knows much in Zeppelin history, I give Coverdale credit. But, he does not have that same style Plant does. Plant is a showman and a sex symbol. Coverdale is only a showman. A bit too arrogant for Led Zeppelins style. Robert Plant is much better at the Zeppelin stuff than Coverdale. Reasoning? He adds that extra edge brought on by Bonzo, Jonzy and page. Together, that is a rocky combo that fits well. If it were coverdale and not Plant, it would not have been as big.
