This is my favorite smartphone and i really appreciate how you actually USE this phone in the review..this is exactly what i am seeking in a review. Good Job
@reddnmilla same here he actually used alot of different features the phones has to offer, not like other reviews of people whjo seem to like to hear them selfs talk lmao
I've seen videos that show some enlightened dot next to the front camera, that might be a message-notification, like other devices (HTC Desire) have. Can you confirm that? Thx!
@Isoik dont forget he was looking through everything in the phone, changing settings, taking pictures, it was constantly on. if this video took an hour to record, the phone was on for an hour, plus with all the stuff running in the background.
@kingkonggarden I like watching reviews from both Noah and Mike honestly. It's good to get more than one persons point of view. I think Mike does a great job reviewing as well. He takes time to show us all the capabilities of the phone.
for the video chatting...can you video chat on skype? or any other chat service? a guy from the sprint store told me you could... didnt know if i believed him. but he said it about the evo, do you know?
This phone is sweet and I am really thinking about getting it. Is there away where you can use AIM and YIM on the phone ? And do yall know anything about metropcs ? and what kind of android phone they are supposed to have coming out ? And if so, could you tell some details on it ? Thanks alot for the great video review.
Okay I watched a few reviews of this phone everyone is avoiding the youtube! I was in the store and when I looked at the youtube on the phone it was aweful. Did anyone else notice this or was it the 2 i played with in the store? I mean it was pixelated so bad I could not even see the video. Someone let me know if maybe it was a setting or something
does samsung epic 4g allows you to use flash while you're recording videos or the flash is just for taking pictures with the camera? and also i was wondering if we could use the camera flash as a light?
@jersey2221 I have an evo 4g. I just explained how easy it was to upgrade to android 2.2. You don't need a computer sprint sends the upgrade straight to your phone. It's awesome.
I haven't found anywhere yet - can you sideload applications from outside the market like you can on the Vibrant, or is it locked down like the Captivate is? Thanks if anyone knows - it's a deal-breaker for me if I can't sideload.
Great videos and reviews from these guys. Very informative and they show you the features that you'd probably want to know about. I do agree that the video chat may not be the most functional like the iPhone's facetime, but, holding down the button to talk isn't the end of the world. Also, the whole 4g $10 charge is pretty lame, but no carrier is perfect. I think overall, Sprint does offer the most value, even though they're ripping you off for $10. Epic is my next phone.
@ian48065 Oh okay, lol sorry I sound stupid... I just didn't know because all the internet connections said WIFI, 4G, Bluetooth, and there was no 3G... Lol
Loaded froyo 2.2 yesterday. The phone had a pop up saying I had a software update & it updated my wifes evo4g 2 froyo. All I did was press ok & install. Best browsing experience on any phone bar none. Love & God Bless
so...was it just that quikpic or whatever application that worked like that? ihope so...so you can just get a different application because that would piss me off if people can only hear me if they call me and ipress and hold that talk button
Some people such as myself that are going to get this phone have a while before they can do the upgrade and I was wondering the price of the phone (Full price) Ive seen the captivates price is like 500.00 but with the addition of the keyboard front facing camera and what not...is it going to be closer to six hundred dollars??
Your complaint about the lights on the capacitive buttons isn't really valid because you can put the buttons on the same timer as the screen in the options menu.
@mobileburn Engadget updated their review with this (they had complained about the same thing initially): "Sprint has let us know that you can actually change the behavior of the button backlighting -- it uses the keyboard's backlight timeout setting, which is 6 seconds by default but can be set to match the screen. Problem solved!"
seen your two videos for the epic, thanks for taking your time with the phone to show what the phone does. others just skip over alot of stuff or just show the same stuff. great job. i'm getting two after seening this video. wifey and mines, thank u
@roy15840 My homework skills are fine. Other IM systems don't come on the device. I'm not going to list every application in the Android market just because somebody could install it. I'm reviewing the phone as it ships, not as it is after it's loaded up with 3rd party apps.
1. Is there a setting to keep the backlighting on for the touch sensitive buttons?
2. What does the Vibrant/Capacitive touchwiz have that the epic version doesn't? (So far I notice the lockscreen, heard about the music player, daily briefing, editing the home screen/ dock...what else is missing??)
@MoneyMakerRayRay No way to increase backlight time on those buttons that I have found, but I have not used the device all that long (it is already on its way to Todd Haselton for review). As far as I can tell, the homescreens can't be modified/rearranged, nor can the main menu. Daily briefing is missing. Bad lock screen. That's all I've noticed.
I believe you can adjust the timing for the back light to stay on and that should allow the touch buttons to stay on longer. I'm sure it's somewhere in settings. Maybe under Display or something. I remember watching a quick look at the Epic when it was announced along with the other versions and they mentioned the buttons going out quick to. They said they changed the setting for back lighting and it helped. Hope it does for you and others.
Great review Michael. Your reviews are ALWAYS more detailed than any other reviews on youtube. Thanks for such a well thought out and descriptive demonstration of these features. Keep it up buddy! :)
@aznkid248 Yes it can go in landscape without pulling out the physical keyboard.
I believe if you watch Noah's review on the Epic from Phonedog he shows that. Michael does awesome reviews as well. Noah and Michael and this other guy I can't really remember his name are the best. They go in depth and show common things people would probably ask questions on.
Great review!! Overall it seems like it a good device!! For me tho I'd have to pass cause I'm not a fan of hard keyboards, I like the on screen keyboards, but other than that it looks like a solid phone!!
Heard that the music player is different in this compared to that of Vibrant or Captivate? Could you please create another part showing the music player and the GPS? Thanks.
@creativekams Yes the GPS is fine on the Epic. Samsung said so: Go on Engadget.com and they have a small post on it. I tried to paste the link to it on here in the reply but it won't let me. Keeps saying 'error, try again'
Thank you. I did see that. But for reviews I never read engadget as they don't cover it completely or properly unless it is an apple device. I just go there for other articles and for the funny comment section they have. I was hoping something would be shown here. Anyways, maybe Brandon from PocketNow or Phil from AndroidCentral might show something. Waiting for their reviews.

That $10 charge is for (as you stated) "premium data." Not 4G.
They call it premium data specifically so that they can say to anyone who lives in a non-4G zone that it isn't for 4G, when it basically is.
