  • 2:30 "beacouse it was the chance of my life i did not stop hitting him"

  • Rip machen, say one for us. He didnt comit suicide but fel thru window accidentaly!

  • What...the...fuck

  • Two of Machen's seconds were attending to him while the ref was counting over him.

I don't know what the rules were at that time, but nowadays a fighter is automatically

disqualified if his second comes into the ring while a fight is in progress.

Machen later had mental problems, and eventually committed suicide.

  • What a great ko by the legend. We need more refs like that around today. If a boxer keeps getting up let him continue.

  • Ingemar was in the best shape of his life in this fight. This version of Ingo would never have lost two of three fights against Patterson.

  • @QueenToBishop Nah, Ingo was a one dimensional fighter and not half as good as Patterson. If he hadn't landed that punch early he probably would have lost this fight. I don't think Machen took him seriously.

  • As the referee, Joe Lewis pretty much let the same thing happen to Jerry Quarry in his second Frazier fight. It is the ref's fault, not the fighter's.

  • @TraderJack641 this is true. still, to me, one of the most brutal knockouts in the history of the game. Machen was lucky he wasn't killed or permanently disabled. PS: What Marciano did to Jersey Joe was pretty bad too.

  • Svenskt stål!

  • Machen's trainers or manager should have jumped into the ring sooner or thrown in the towel!

  • That is the worst refereeing I have ever seen. They should have stripped him of his license. I'm surprised Machen survived that.

  • Machen really got nailed; thar right hook!

  • Den bäste boxaren Sverige någonsin har haft!

  • Johansen should have been disqualified. He's hitting the man when he's only been held up with the ropes so he's technically hitting the man when he's down more than once.

  • @capablemachine its up to the ref to stop it

  • @ronbos60 Yes it is so why isn't he doing his job? He must step in when the boxer is in danger of receiving a serious injury and he must call a knockdown when it a fighter is only being held up by the ropes. Those are the rules.

  • @capablemachine That's the way it was back in those days. Refs let fighters take a lot more punishment than they do now but I agree that even back then most Refs would have stopped the fight sooner. That was way over the top.

  • @tbcass Well Johannsen got his just deserts with Patterson's left hand.

  • @capablemachine Only after he took Patterson's title away in their first fight by punching his lights out.

Johansson like Patterson lacked the ability to take a stiff punch but his right hand was lethal. Perhaps just as good as Baer or Schmeling's right.

  • @capablemachine If his Machens gloves were not touching the canvas and the ref allowed the fight to go on Johansson did not commit a foul. Maybe it was unsportsmanlike like to keep belting Machen but it was certainly not a foul. The referee should have never let that happen.Blame the referee not Johansson.

  • This is a proper stoppage, the way they used to do things before the pussification of boxing. Back when guys got REAL asskickings.

  • What the fuck is the referee doing, unbelievable, did he want Machen to get killed!

He is totally distracted during the first knockdown and allows Machen to take half a dozen clean punches to the head whilst semi-conscious. Is this why pro boxing was outlawed in Sweden for decades?

  • @lordbyronofbristol Shut your cunt you fucking cunt. This was a proper stoppage. Old school stuff.

  • What the fuck is the referee doing, unbelievable, did he want Machen to get killed!

  • S

ynd att machen fick bestående skador i skallen

  • That ref was incredibly dumb, he shoulda stopped it after the second knockdown! Machen was clearly out, could barely stand.

  • Comment removed

  • The Toonder right hand!!

  • 02:25 onwards:

    That's how people get killed.

  • the ref must be punch drunk does not even look at the condition of Machen

  • @billthestinker Fuck Machen. He lost.

  • sköna domare de hade

  • It's Ingo commentating the fight. He's saying he had big respect for Machen knowing he came to this fight with a string of KOs. He says he took the fight because the money was good and he had a glimpse of hope of winning. Then he explains that he saw the fight as the chance of a life time. That's why I keep hitting him in the end.

In the end Ingo says that it took Machen two years to re-enter the ring. 'When I saw him then he appeared like a novice.'

  • @perfuzz Ingo is right about Machen I saw a couple of his post-Johansson fights and he wasn't the same guy.

The money must have been good. Otherwise, why would a top contender be willing to go overseas to take on an undefeated fighter with the risk of a hometown decision. No decision was necessary, obviously, but I think the ref let Eddie take too much punishment.

It took a couple ring deaths(like Benny Paret in '62) to change the approach to refereeing.

  • Johanson was a fearsome puncher.

  • @gianca60 His biggest problem was that he couldn't stand prosperity. He enjoyed life after he beat Patterson in '59. Floyd, OTOH, worked his butt off and was ready for the return match.

  • @battenwood Yep. I read that in Hollywood had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor.

  • He was spanked old school

  • damn that was a nice knockout

  • That's the worst late stoppage I've ever seen, that guy looked like he almost died.

  • Johansson was a big puncher, sonny liston failed to stop machen

  • Ingo är min morfar :)

  • It´s cruel, but that´s boxing or at least was. Machen was a very neat fighter, quick and with a hard punch, looking like a million dollars. Before this match he was ranked second, had knocked out almost all his opponents and never taken a knock-down himself, reckoned as the next champ. But he was utterly destroyed by Ingemar. Afterwards he was a shadow of his former self, had huge psychological problems and ultimately killed himself. RIP, Eddie, we didn´t care too much then, but we do today.

  • @RudySunseeker

Of course the referee should have stopped the match after the second knock (just like Ingemar says in the video).

It may be that he had a brain injury after all the punches he got, hanging on the rope, unconscious. A brain injury can lead to various psychological problems.

This fight was a good fight, but the price was too high. Our hearts suffers.

  • Ingemar Johansson DU är en hjälte för det svenska folket!

  • It's a miracle Machen never suffered brain damage after this fight. The ref just stood there while a fighter pounded on an unconscious, defenseless opponent. Awful refereeing.

  • @FlaviusConstantius

I give you the same answer as gave RudySunseeker.

  • Ingo threw his right hand like a dream.

  • terrible refereeing here! clueless! first time seeing this fight. Eddie could have been killed!

  • That fucking referee just let Ingo swing away while poor Eddie was already out on his feet. What a heartless prick.

  • Hello archdeaconj--The first Johansson-Patterson fight was fought in Yankee Stadium not in Madison Sq. Garden. In North America the broadcast was either radio or closed circuit tv.

As for Johansson-Bygraves 2 (February 1962) Ingo won on a 7th round stoppage. It was a slaughter.

The first Johansson-Bygraves fight (February 1956) however was close, with Ingo just edging Bygraves, As for the London fight, Ingo was winning easily with his jab until the knockdown right at the end of the fight.

  • That Johansson was one clever dude. He jabbed you into boredom until he saw the opening and he let that right hand go.He knew he had thunder in that hand. He did the very same thing to Patterson in their first fight.

  • Occasionally confusing commentary from Johansson.... here's a quick translation: "...as you can see, I'm wary in the beginning, i'm extremely cautious, since I have great respect for Eddie Machen. And if you look at Eddie Machen, he's every inch a winner. Before this fight he's won almost all his fights by KO, knocked out lots, big guys and small guys. Personally I felt that it was a pretty big risk to take, to fight him, but also knew how financially viable it was. Perhaps I wouldn't have"

  • "dared hope for a result, but I was in fantastic shape at the time... As you saw, or rather, it's pretty hard to see that right I throw. It comes so quickly, or so fast, so it's hard to keep up" (lol) ". Afterwards, I don't want to rush things, but keep fighting like I had up to that point, and not try to take any chances, because then it's pretty easy to get walloped. But the second big punch I caught him with was quite devastating also; he's pretty gone and shouldn't, when you"

  • "look at it like this, the fight should've been stopped, perhaps already after the second knockdown. As you can see, in this fight we didn't have padding in all the corners, and that's one of the reasons he was so thoroughly knocked out. He ended up sitting on the lowest rope, and I could continue, and since this was the chance of my life, I don't stop, but continue hitting." ... "The tragedy that unfolds here (in Machen's corner) really is something enormous, when you consider that"

  • "Eddie Machen has won almost all his previous fights, by KO (it was 16 KO's i think, in 25 fights?), "and been world champion (????) without having had the chance to fight Floyd Patterson. He had never before been floored, and after this fight it took him two years to recover. I watched a couple of his fights following this one, and he seemed like a novice."

  • @secondwindrecords: Pretty cool, thanks for the translation. Took a second to realize you need to read it from the bottom up; then it makes more sense. But right on, thanks man.

  • did that announcer say eskimoland?

  • 3:22 - Awesome, i'll shake his head some more so his brain really gets fucked up.

  • johansson was a very hard puncher, don't forget machen went the distance with sonny liston also a hard puncher!

  • Idiot the fef were all like this in those days

  • Ingemar Johansson is my great uncle.

    -Justin Johansson

  • Agreed DannyA123. Ingo had one HELL of a right hand! He went through one of the top fighters in the world like the guy was made of popsicle sticks...

  • It is Ingo thats speaking

  • Yes it is Ingo

  • What a fucking moron that ref was.

  • @xMIKEBROWN30x "that ref" was Ingemar "Ingo" Johansson himself, talking about the fight many years after, his fighting career had made a mark on his made and that is displayed in his slow voice. RIP.

  • thats not joe louis

  • That referee is a top quality cunt. Well, most likely dead now. Poor fucker. Ingemar was a great boxing. Sweden's never had a better boxer, or decade of fighters come to that. Unlike the huggers and buttfuckers they have now.

  • as a boxing fan and budding historian, I can safely say this is one of the most disgusting knockouts ever. Hopefully I never have to see a Referee as shoddy as this. Disgraceful.

  • Don't be a wuss. This is what sometimes happens in boxing: a fighter gets hurt, held up by the ropes, and his opponent does what he's supposed to do: with all his power smash the dazed guy's chin and jaw until there's nothing left. Both fighters new the risks before they entered the ring. Ingo was the better man. End of story. HENRY.

  • True boxing.

Ingemar, you meant a lot to our common city.

    Vi kommer alltid älska dig.

Vilken fruktansvärd fin stad Göteborg alltid kommer förbli!

  • Ingo's Bingo was one powerful punch, and this quick win over the rated Eddie Machen was impressive, for sure; but that referee almost got Machen killed!

  • You're not kiddin'.

Seems like he should've received an 8ct somewhere between 8-12 punches before the KO!

  • rip ingo

  • Johansson had a murderous right hand

  • Eck and Ked,

Absolutely agree, ref was a major fool.

I remember Ingo well from back in the day of Patterson- Johansson fights.

We rooted for Floyd back then, the American - but Ingo was respected and liked.

And the their 2nd and 3rd fights, could heve come out the other way.

  • Thunder and lightning! Vila i frid Ingo. Sveriges största idrottsman

  • Heja Ingo!!!

  • That referee is an utter disgrace. Machen was nearly killed . This idiot is still counting as the medics are attending to him.Perhaps the most moronic human being ever.

  • Hopefully this stupid jackass of a referee was never allowed near a boxing ring again. Talk about a dottering old fool. Great win by Johansson though; just an absolutely crushing win.

  • THE HAMMER OF THOR!! Fan vilken knockout i slutet! RIP Ingo

  • This is going back a bit. I remember my mum making me a flask of coffee to stay up to watch the fight from Madison Sq. Garden, broadcast by the BBC. Britain is 5 hours behind NY so it was in the middle of the night. Johannson was white hot then. Machen in 1 (Machen was number one contender then), Patterson in 3. Of course you can't maintain that white heat - in any sport. In the end he struggled to beat the likes of Joe Bygraves and Brain London (who comes from my home town, incidentally).

  • Watching this fight proves Ingo had the killer instinct.

  • Ingo and patterson indeed became close friends and business partners aftertheir savage 3 fight series, makes sense ,ever watch 2 friends or brothers box? they try to bomb each other out. ingo was a mediocre champ but he did have that bomb right hand, thats how he became the champ.

  • The only person that beat him was Patterson (2 out of 3). I would have liked to have seen him vs. more quality fighters like Machen and Patterson. Folley would have given him a good fight I think. He beat H. Cooper and B. London as well but these guys were pretty beatable by good fighters.

  • This is the first time I have seen this KO. It appears the standing eight count didn't apply back then!

After the second knockdown, the referee allowed Machen to take around 12 unnecessary punches to the head when he could barely stand.

Johannsen had average boxing skill but was certainly a big puncher who demolished all european opposition before facing Floyd Patterson in the 1st of their 3 title fights. Patterson later on became his life long friend until his passing in 2006.

  • sveriges stolthet!

  • It's hard to believe this happened to Machen when you look at the Liston fight. Liston could really punch and really never hurt Machen. He looked kinda cold and he also said that he really didin't know enough about Johansson. But wow what a knochout

  • Looks like Machen didn't have to argue the referee didn't give him a chance! Surprised though that Machen's corner didn't throw in the towel!!

  • Vila i frid!

  • A real champ a real fighter RIP we wont forget

  • Ingemar was a champion when being a champion still meant something. "The" heavyweight champ instead "one of the champions". He brought fun into the training camp and dynamite into the ring. Rest in peace, champ. - Jan Swart, South Africa

  • han använder tors hammer här

  • strong punching from ingemar, and lamentable refereeing from probably a time when referees could be excused. ....as a guy growing up and studying heavyweights, and at one time being able to recite them all, it was always refreshing to be able to say the name ingemar johansson.....

  • Dagsedel =)

  • hmm vilken skilnad mellan då och nutid ......

tekniken i dåtiden är så dålig... still boxning is boxning ^^

  • Njae..tekniken varnog enklare. Dom boxas nästan precis som nutidens MMA fighters,,stående med mycket långa slag, och huvudet mera upprätt,men ett j-a klipp i slagen.

  • Vila i frid vår störste fighter... Nu e de bara ali kvar av dom riktigt stora...

  • Oh my god Machen got slaughtered! :O

  • I was crushed to hear Ingemar passed away early yesterday morning, he was a great competitor and a very nice man. Sweden and the world have lost a great champion and role model this week.

  • Vila i frid Ingemar..

Ni som inte kan respektera honom kan hålla er väck från att kommentera, kräk.

  • Haha visst. If you even dream about beating him you'd better wake up and apologize

  • R.I.P

  • Vila i frid Ingemar! För evigt i våra hjärtan!

    R.I.P.

  • R.I.P :/

  • Riktigt grym... RIP

  • R.I.P

  • The biggest swede that ever was..

    R.I.P Champ

  • I agree, the ref should have stopped it, with Johansson's powerful punches, Macher could easily have suffered hemmorraging to the brain, dangling on the ropes and taking those kinds of punches. In today's "boxing" standards it would never fly ;) May he Rest In Peace

  • a young cassius clay actually got the chance to spar with the great ingemar in preparation for his third fight with floyd patterson

    may he rest in peace

  • R.I.P. Ingemar

  • Ingo was a great boxer, yes. I would really like to see some more fights with him, mostly the first Johansson/Patterson fight. It's a shame it isn't uploaded. Can't find it anywhere.

  • I'll try to upload it as soon as possible.

  • You see the way Johansson keeps hitting Machen when Machen is caught on the ropes and defenseless. Ali never would do anything like that; he would always let up. Ali would never even hit a man who was on his way down; I saw him pull back punches many times on a fighter who was going down.

  • @deepcosmiclove Mabye you sould comment on a Ali video then? idiot

  • Look inside yourself.

  • this isnt the first time ie deiscovered an incredile person, only to have looked at the comments and found that they died within two das prior to me watching. Its quite upsetting :(

    RIP Ingemar

  • RIP Ingemar. You´re a true champ!

  • what a useless referee (andrew smyth), machen could've been killed!

    R I P INGO

  • You were truly great and an inspiration for many.

My thoughts and my condolences goes out to your family and friends. May they remember the joy you gave them.

    R.I.P Champ!

  • RIP Champ

  • RIP Ingo

  • RIP Ingemar

  • RIP Ingo!

  • RIP Ingemar. You are a legend

  • Yeah he did and very sad to hear that... Patterson and Johansson were very good friends after these battlesand both passed away ironically from the same disease (Alzheimer's) . One made it a point to visit the other every year... Your adversaries can always end up being in your corner and your best buddy in the end (e.g. Mickey Ward & Arturo Gatti).

  • I've heard that the great Swedish champion Ingemar Johansson has just died.

    May he rest in peace.

  • yes he did, it's very sadly, but we will always remember his powerful right punch.

  • Ingmar e kusin me min mormor :P

  • Tack för detta videoklipp!

  • Was that ref immediately lynched after the fight? I certainly hope so. Hell of a puncher Johansson was anyway.

  • HOLY FUCK..............rather un-nessisary.

  • Ingemar Johansson was the one talking in this clip. And he said the referee should have broken the fight after the 2nd knockdown.

  • I agree with Ingemar...hahaha
