@QueenToBishop Nah, Ingo was a one dimensional fighter and not half as good as Patterson. If he hadn't landed that punch early he probably would have lost this fight. I don't think Machen took him seriously.
As the referee, Joe Lewis pretty much let the same thing happen to Jerry Quarry in his second Frazier fight. It is the ref's fault, not the fighter's.
@TraderJack641 this is true. still, to me, one of the most brutal knockouts in the history of the game. Machen was lucky he wasn't killed or permanently disabled. PS: What Marciano did to Jersey Joe was pretty bad too.
"He must step in when the boxer is in danger of receiving a serious injury"
no. this is old style boxing. go watch griffith paret when paret was killed on live television they added some more rules after that fight but before then you could beat a man who was unconscious even if he was being held up by the ropes.
Johansen should have been disqualified. He's hitting the man when he's only been held up with the ropes so he's technically hitting the man when he's down more than once.
@ronbos60 Yes it is so why isn't he doing his job? He must step in when the boxer is in danger of receiving a serious injury and he must call a knockdown when it a fighter is only being held up by the ropes. Those are the rules.
@capablemachine That's the way it was back in those days. Refs let fighters take a lot more punishment than they do now but I agree that even back then most Refs would have stopped the fight sooner. That was way over the top.
@capablemachine If his Machens gloves were not touching the canvas and the ref allowed the fight to go on Johansson did not commit a foul. Maybe it was unsportsmanlike like to keep belting Machen but it was certainly not a foul. The referee should have never let that happen.Blame the referee not Johansson.
What the fuck is the referee doing, unbelievable, did he want Machen to get killed!
He is totally distracted during the first knockdown and allows Machen to take half a dozen clean punches to the head whilst semi-conscious. Is this why pro boxing was outlawed in Sweden for decades?
It's Ingo commentating the fight. He's saying he had big respect for Machen knowing he came to this fight with a string of KOs. He says he took the fight because the money was good and he had a glimpse of hope of winning. Then he explains that he saw the fight as the chance of a life time. That's why I keep hitting him in the end.
In the end Ingo says that it took Machen two years to re-enter the ring. 'When I saw him then he appeared like a novice.'
@perfuzz Ingo is right about Machen I saw a couple of his post-Johansson fights and he wasn't the same guy.
The money must have been good. Otherwise, why would a top contender be willing to go overseas to take on an undefeated fighter with the risk of a hometown decision. No decision was necessary, obviously, but I think the ref let Eddie take too much punishment.
It took a couple ring deaths(like Benny Paret in '62) to change the approach to refereeing.
@gianca60 His biggest problem was that he couldn't stand prosperity. He enjoyed life after he beat Patterson in '59. Floyd, OTOH, worked his butt off and was ready for the return match.
It´s cruel, but that´s boxing or at least was. Machen was a very neat fighter, quick and with a hard punch, looking like a million dollars. Before this match he was ranked second, had knocked out almost all his opponents and never taken a knock-down himself, reckoned as the next champ. But he was utterly destroyed by Ingemar. Afterwards he was a shadow of his former self, had huge psychological problems and ultimately killed himself. RIP, Eddie, we didn´t care too much then, but we do today.
Of course the referee should have stopped the match after the second knock (just like Ingemar says in the video).
It may be that he had a brain injury after all the punches he got, hanging on the rope, unconscious. A brain injury can lead to various psychological problems.
This fight was a good fight, but the price was too high. Our hearts suffers.
It's a miracle Machen never suffered brain damage after this fight. The ref just stood there while a fighter pounded on an unconscious, defenseless opponent. Awful refereeing.

Hello archdeaconj--The first Johansson-Patterson fight was fought in Yankee Stadium not in Madison Sq. Garden. In North America the broadcast was either radio or closed circuit tv.
As for Johansson-Bygraves 2 (February 1962) Ingo won on a 7th round stoppage. It was a slaughter.
The first Johansson-Bygraves fight (February 1956) however was close, with Ingo just edging Bygraves, As for the London fight, Ingo was winning easily with his jab until the knockdown right at the end of the fight.
That Johansson was one clever dude. He jabbed you into boredom until he saw the opening and he let that right hand go.He knew he had thunder in that hand. He did the very same thing to Patterson in their first fight.

"look at it like this, the fight should've been stopped, perhaps already after the second knockdown. As you can see, in this fight we didn't have padding in all the corners, and that's one of the reasons he was so thoroughly knocked out. He ended up sitting on the lowest rope, and I could continue, and since this was the chance of my life, I don't stop, but continue hitting." ... "The tragedy that unfolds here (in Machen's corner) really is something enormous, when you consider that"
"Eddie Machen has won almost all his previous fights, by KO (it was 16 KO's i think, in 25 fights?), "and been world champion (????) without having had the chance to fight Floyd Patterson. He had never before been floored, and after this fight it took him two years to recover. I watched a couple of his fights following this one, and he seemed like a novice."

That referee is a top quality cunt. Well, most likely dead now. Poor fucker. Ingemar was a great boxing. Sweden's never had a better boxer, or decade of fighters come to that. Unlike the huggers and buttfuckers they have now.
as a boxing fan and budding historian, I can safely say this is one of the most disgusting knockouts ever. Hopefully I never have to see a Referee as shoddy as this. Disgraceful.
Don't be a wuss. This is what sometimes happens in boxing: a fighter gets hurt, held up by the ropes, and his opponent does what he's supposed to do: with all his power smash the dazed guy's chin and jaw until there's nothing left. Both fighters new the risks before they entered the ring. Ingo was the better man. End of story. HENRY.
Ingo's Bingo was one powerful punch, and this quick win over the rated Eddie Machen was impressive, for sure; but that referee almost got Machen killed!
That referee is an utter disgrace. Machen was nearly killed . This idiot is still counting as the medics are attending to him.Perhaps the most moronic human being ever.
Hopefully this stupid jackass of a referee was never allowed near a boxing ring again. Talk about a dottering old fool. Great win by Johansson though; just an absolutely crushing win.
This is going back a bit. I remember my mum making me a flask of coffee to stay up to watch the fight from Madison Sq. Garden, broadcast by the BBC. Britain is 5 hours behind NY so it was in the middle of the night. Johannson was white hot then. Machen in 1 (Machen was number one contender then), Patterson in 3. Of course you can't maintain that white heat - in any sport. In the end he struggled to beat the likes of Joe Bygraves and Brain London (who comes from my home town, incidentally).
Ingo and patterson indeed became close friends and business partners aftertheir savage 3 fight series, makes sense ,ever watch 2 friends or brothers box? they try to bomb each other out. ingo was a mediocre champ but he did have that bomb right hand, thats how he became the champ.
The only person that beat him was Patterson (2 out of 3). I would have liked to have seen him vs. more quality fighters like Machen and Patterson. Folley would have given him a good fight I think. He beat H. Cooper and B. London as well but these guys were pretty beatable by good fighters.
This is the first time I have seen this KO. It appears the standing eight count didn't apply back then!
After the second knockdown, the referee allowed Machen to take around 12 unnecessary punches to the head when he could barely stand.
Johannsen had average boxing skill but was certainly a big puncher who demolished all european opposition before facing Floyd Patterson in the 1st of their 3 title fights. Patterson later on became his life long friend until his passing in 2006.
It's hard to believe this happened to Machen when you look at the Liston fight. Liston could really punch and really never hurt Machen. He looked kinda cold and he also said that he really didin't know enough about Johansson. But wow what a knochout
Ingemar was a champion when being a champion still meant something. "The" heavyweight champ instead "one of the champions". He brought fun into the training camp and dynamite into the ring. Rest in peace, champ. - Jan Swart, South Africa
strong punching from ingemar, and lamentable refereeing from probably a time when referees could be excused. ....as a guy growing up and studying heavyweights, and at one time being able to recite them all, it was always refreshing to be able to say the name ingemar johansson.....
Njae..tekniken varnog enklare. Dom boxas nästan precis som nutidens MMA fighters,,stående med mycket långa slag, och huvudet mera upprätt,men ett j-a klipp i slagen.
I was crushed to hear Ingemar passed away early yesterday morning, he was a great competitor and a very nice man. Sweden and the world have lost a great champion and role model this week.
I agree, the ref should have stopped it, with Johansson's powerful punches, Macher could easily have suffered hemmorraging to the brain, dangling on the ropes and taking those kinds of punches. In today's "boxing" standards it would never fly ;) May he Rest In Peace
Ingo was a great boxer, yes. I would really like to see some more fights with him, mostly the first Johansson/Patterson fight. It's a shame it isn't uploaded. Can't find it anywhere.
You see the way Johansson keeps hitting Machen when Machen is caught on the ropes and defenseless. Ali never would do anything like that; he would always let up. Ali would never even hit a man who was on his way down; I saw him pull back punches many times on a fighter who was going down.
this isnt the first time ie deiscovered an incredile person, only to have looked at the comments and found that they died within two das prior to me watching. Its quite upsetting :(
Yeah he did and very sad to hear that... Patterson and Johansson were very good friends after these battlesand both passed away ironically from the same disease (Alzheimer's) . One made it a point to visit the other every year... Your adversaries can always end up being in your corner and your best buddy in the end (e.g. Mickey Ward & Arturo Gatti).

Two of Machen's seconds were attending to him while the ref was counting over him.
I don't know what the rules were at that time, but nowadays a fighter is automatically
disqualified if his second comes into the ring while a fight is in progress.
Machen later had mental problems, and eventually committed suicide.

strong punching from ingemar, and lamentable refereeing from probably a time when referees could be excused. ....as a guy growing up and studying heavyweights, and at one time being able to recite them all, it was always refreshing to be able to say the name ingemar johansson.....

hmm vilken skilnad mellan då och nutid ......
tekniken i dåtiden är så dålig... still boxning is boxning ^^
serraniumxetra 3 years ago

In today's "boxing" standards it would never fly ;) May he Rest In Peace

a young cassius clay actually got the chance to spar with the great ingemar in preparation for his third fight with floyd patterson

Ingo was a great boxer, yes. I would really like to see some more fights with him, mostly the first Johansson/Patterson fight. It's a shame it isn't uploaded. Can't find it anywhere.
maskarlasse 3 years ago
I'll try to upload it as soon as possible.

You see the way Johansson keeps hitting Machen when Machen is caught on the ropes and defenseless. Ali never would do anything like that; he would always let up. Ali would never even hit a man who was on his way down; I saw him pull back punches many times on a fighter who was going down.

Was that ref immediately lynched after the fight? I certainly hope so. Hell of a puncher Johansson was anyway.

HOLY FUCK..............rather un-nessisary.

Ingemar Johansson was the one talking in this clip. And he said the referee should have broken the fight after the 2nd knockdown.
