For some reason I got up this morning and this song was stuck in my head, so I thought I'm going to see if it's on UTube. I haven't heard this song in years, thanks for posting it. It's always been a favorite of mine since childhood.
We thank you for posting these. We loved each and every thing Marty Robbins did, and always enjoyed his sense of humor. Memories come back of him not wanting to leave the stage, and all of us laughing. What a great entertainer!!!
I just came back from a vacation in Red River. I told my mother in Japan where I was going, and I thought finding a video of Red River Valley song would be very helpful for her to know where I was going. And then I found this video. There are many versions of this song, but I thought this video and the way it was sang was perfect to let her know where Red River was. It is a wonderful song and wonderfully sang. Thank you.
Marty was truely one of the all time greats in country music. I happened to be going to Phoenix the morning he died and Marty this and Marty that is all you could hear on the raido over there. As most of you know he was born in Glendale there in the Phoenix metro area.
Thank you. I enjoyed this version very much. Marty was a pure genious when it comes to Country Music, From songs like "Feleena" to El Paso you feel as though you are there in the background witnessing the actual scene. There will never be another like the Great Marty Robbins.
Marty Robbins had just the greatest voice, so effortless and true. And he seemed to enjoy himself, as those around him seemed to enjoy being there. Love him always.
The best of the best ... The Red River Valley ... my mother's favorite song of her whole 80 plus years. Marty was a legend in his own time, and now has a permanent place in history. Blessings be.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing these classic video clips and songs for the benefit of those who may never have the chance to enjoy these beautiful songs otherwise. God bless you!
Love it. Always have since i heard it. I'm guessing most the posts here are from fogeys older than my dad woulda been. I'm 33 yrs old now and just LOVE marty robbins. I could go forever on how badass he is but the only people who would understand already agree so i'm just gonna give it a giant thumbs up and wait for the meteor.
Such a pure sound, Marty's voice and the harmony of the Glaser Brothers.....Sure do miss REAL COUNTRY MUSIC on the radio, this stuff they play now days is no more country than a cow that can fly.
Dear Marty we miss your bright smile and beautiful singing, the many songs that you have written and the wonderful Western style in which you performed is legendary. grazie (GMT) giovanni
Red River Valley is a folk song and cowboy music standard of controversial origins that has gone by different names—e.g., "Cowboy Love Song", "Bright Sherman Valley", "Bright Laurel Valley", "In the Bright Mohawk Valley", and "Bright Little Valley"— depending on where it has been sung. WIKIPEDIA – The Free Encyclopedia grazie (GMT) giovanni
Listened to Marty in the 60's and still love hearing his music. Reminds me of my mom and dad when they would dance in the basement while I rode my tricycle through the water that drained from the wringer washer!!! Precious moments!!!
This was my always my grandma and grandpa's favorite song. I used to play it on the piano with my grandma while my sister would sing and my grandpa would dance with my mom around the room. My grandpa died on valentines day. This song was played with his picture slideshow at his funeral.
Another childhood memory comes rolling along!! Thank you TARQUIN45 for posting this video. Thank you MARY ROBBINS & BOBBY SYKES & DON WINTERS for sharing your talents with the world.
I too am a srilankan who was lucky to hear and appreciate and enjoy listening to a voice that will be long remembered as one of best . Jim Reeves was another singer in a similar class to Marty. Sri lanka is a country that loves music of this genre. Sadly we now seem to hear a very new country music . I am one that longs for the talent of entertainers like Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves . It is good to know these two greats have left us such a rich legacy of music to listen too.
What great comments you made about Marty. If you are Sri Lankan I'd just like to compliment you on your use of the English language that puts many native English speakers on youtube to shame.

Great performance. Yeah, there was nobody like Marty Robbins.
I have a question about this song. Does anyone know which Red River it is referring to? I think I have seen a "Red River" in at least 3 different states.
Today's country singers need to take a lesson from Marty. They over-sing in a country twang which sounds like shit. Marty's voice is effortless and pure - totally unaffected.
Apart from his wonderful vocal ability, I think a lot of people don't realize what an incredibly gifted songwriter Marty was, plus the undoubted charisma he possessed.

My dad used to sing this song in the shower all the time when i was younger. I hated it so much, it was so annoying and I hated hearing him sing it. Now hes gone, and I would give anything to hear him sing it again.
@canadiandcute : Hi. My mom died on April 20 this year. I leaned over her hospital bed and sang this song to her : It's the song she would sing to me when I was a little boy. It's one of only two that I remember her ever singing aloud. I'm glad you have the memory of your daddy howling in the shower and someday, your sadness will fade into the sweetness of your memories.
OH the memories this song brings back!! I was in 4rd grade, 9 years old...and our class & the class next door would get together to learn *box* dance steps! There was a boy that I could not stand (the typical boy/girl thing of that age), and every time he would ask me to dance! I HATED that year in school! But...I LOVE ALL of Marty's songs! My most favorite is 'Don't Worry', but Marty was my favorite male vocalist...it broke my heart when he died!
it is a shame that most people my age have never even heard of marty robbins. for those of you who are wondering, i am only 20, but i grew up listening to the greats the marty, hank williams and patsey cline. hell when i was seventeen i was a board operator at a classic country radio station back home.
wow! somehow people forget about marty robbins when the greats are mentioned.........this song alone puts him in my hall of fame........his voice and pure delivery have no equal.......his name is written in pure gold, right there in hillbilly heaven.
@tarquin45 Waylon Jennings was from Littlefield, Texas, just down the road from Lubbock, which gives you an idea why he was with Buddy Holly on Buddy's last tour. Rex Allen was from the small town of Wilcox in far eastern AZ.
I totally agree with you,he also wrote many songs,in different syles,Marty was without doubt a giant in the music world, and yet was largely passed-by,it is very hard to understand why!
@tarquin45 Not sure which Waylon you are referring to, but I hope it isn't "Jennings", he is not an Az native. Born and reared in Littlefield, Tx. and worked in Lubbock, Tx radio before moving to Az.
This was my grandfathers favorite song... He was a real cowboy and from a simpler time. It recons back to a time when family and friend singalongs were commonplace, before Radio and TV replaced it from homes across the land. American folk music fading into history. God rest your soul Grandpa!
obviously some ""IN HOUSE"" joke going on but 3 great voices thanks for posting anyone know who theother 2 guys are they seem to have been with Marty a long time
@beleudovice it makes me cry too everytime i hear it... my grandpa used to sing this to me when i was lil... now i bawl like a baby even more when i hear it lol
I heard and liked a song called Red River Rock by Johnny And The Hurricanes... Then my dad told me that there was a christian version too.. Anyone see it on You Tube, here? It starts off as "I don't care what church you belong to".
This song really reminds me of my dad that came from that area of Oklahoma, thats' the reason that he had a red neck, it was from farming in the sun and red dirt of the valley. They were one of the thousands of families that lost their farm to the dust bowl, and moved to California in the 1920's.
Only in America could you go from rags to riches in one generation. As for Marty, that second version truly hit home.
I too come from ireland, but live in england for 45 years. This is one of the first songs I remember my mum singing. My dad sang too when he was drunk. brings back so many memories.
My basketball coach made me dance with the ugliest girl in school during a rainy day in PE back in Jr. High to this song. I think he knew none of the guys would dance with her and I would if he made me! Ha! He was a great basketball coach and I was a lousy dancer!
One of the greatest voices to ever grace the music industry. There will never be another like Marty. His songs bring back such great memories. Wish I could have told him how much I enjoy his songs.
My choir instructor asked me to sing this song for Contest this year, she also wants me to learn the guitar part.
Just thought I'd tell you how I came across this song :]
To be honest, though I like the song very much, I believe I will change the style completely. I plan to give it a slightly more relaxed, and yet almost Renaissance feel. I'm excited to cover this piece :]
This is a really nice song....i know it because i played it in piano....Hey actually i posted it on youtube...pianokeys246 or red river valley on piano is what its under!!! sup to u! i love it
Wonderful presentation. Thank you very much. Superior job by Marty Robbins. Love his music. It also reminds of of Roy Rogers and the suns of the pioneers who sang this song and many, many other beautiful cowboy songs.
One of my favourite people (R.I.P) used to sing this to me. Anny time i here it i am taken back to my chilhood, a wonderfull safe place.. I Miss you.The too Pats? Thank you for a lovely song......
This song was my grandpas favorite song (although he always like it by Gene Autry) we played it his funeral. I love it too, and i'm only 21. Not all my generation is boogered up
Agreed. As you can see, I'm back again today to play the song for my grandfather. I plan to play this song at his funeral too. Perhaps they'll be friends in the afterlife.
I don't listen to much modern music. This era is my favorite. Honestly I don't like much in my generation. Cars, music, movies etc were so much better back then. I relate to my grandparents generation so much easier than I do my own.
Thoughtplacebo, I am not as old as your grandfather, but much older than you. This new technology is a wonderful way for us oldies to revisit our musical past and find stuff we thought no longer existed. Reading your lovely comment gives me hope for the future, for your generation, and for all the new technologies you use to reach out to others. Here's to Youtube, and to you for your thoughtfulness, and to your lucky grandfather
I am 28 years old. My grandfather loves this song and it makes him feel sentimental and reminisce about my grandmother. I play it for him quite often here on youtube. He is having a birthday next week. He turns 75. I figure I should use my capability to use the technological advancements of this generation to enrich what remains of his life. May I be remembered as a good grandson. May he be remembered as a good grandfather. :)
It seems to think Americans believe this song was written in the U.S. It was actually written in the Red River Valley in Manitoba, Canada.

I'm a early-fifty Korean but this song conjures up memories of the good old days.

I heard and liked a song called Red River Rock by Johnny And The Hurricanes... Then my dad told me that there was a christian version too.. Anyone see it on You Tube, here? It starts off as "I don't care what church you belong to".
BobTheHumanBeing 2 years ago
This song really reminds me of my dad that came from that area of Oklahoma, thats' the reason that he had a red neck, it was from farming in the sun and red dirt of the valley. They were one of the thousands of families that lost their farm to the dust bowl, and moved to California in the 1920's.
Only in America could you go from rags to riches in one generation. As for Marty, that second version truly hit home.

My basketball coach made me dance with the ugliest girl in school during a rainy day in PE back in Jr. High to this song. I think he knew none of the guys would dance with her and I would if he made me! Ha! He was a great basketball coach and I was a lousy dancer!

Is it red because the dirt is red and it flows into the river making it look red too? Oklahoma and Texas border, the Red River Valley

Hauntingly beautiful! I've really liked Marty's music since El Paso. I think that was 1959, if my memory serves me correctly.

Wonderful presentation. Thank you very much. Superior job by Marty Robbins. Love his music. It also reminds of of Roy Rogers and the suns of the pioneers who sang this song and many, many other beautiful cowboy songs.

This song was my grandpas favorite song (although he always like it by Gene Autry) we played it his funeral. I love it too, and i'm only 21. Not all my generation is boogered up
ntrowbridge 2 years ago 3
Agreed. As you can see, I'm back again today to play the song for my grandfather. I plan to play this song at his funeral too. Perhaps they'll be friends in the afterlife.

Good for you kid! I am 70 and despair when hearing modern music, far too aggressive, especially that rap rubbish.
INKATS22 2 years ago 4

I'm back again and my grandfather is singing the tune behind me. It's a nice day.

thoughtplacebo 2 years ago 16
What nice comments. You must be a very caring and decent person. Hope he has a great birthday.
