  • awesome.

  • Just checked my CD where this version was: It's called "Tenderly," Ella and Louis Armstrong. Kay Star has a more little nasal tone...this is my Ella!

  • It's definitely Queen Ella! In one of her earlier albums. Absolutely not Kay Star. Just listen to those lower notes, and the diction...it's just unmistakable! My grandfather had this album, I grew up with her...

  • she is the only one who can properly sing this song

  • this IS Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Also, my intuition and knowledge of Ella's voice tells me it's not her, although very close.

  • It it really Ella singing?

  • One of the GREATEST voices ever.

And this version of "Stormy Weather" is long time history.

Only the few "big" lady's of blues from the 50's can "really" sing "such".

  • This is a young Ella Fitzgerald!

  • still miss ya

  • I still miss ella!!

  • sorry, dis ain't Queen Ella.

  • This is not Ella Fitzgerald

  • doesn't sound like ella. but very close

  • Yup, it's Kay Starr - beautiful, and she should be appropriately credited - why doesn't the poster change the credits. This does have similarities to Ella, but the drawn out vowels are very atypical for Ella.

  • @shysmiling or anyone who knows - PLEASE let me know what album this version is from. I have been searching for this version for years. Thanks.

  • @Cenoteazul63 the comment above yours says it's Kay Starr

  • After listening from 2:32 to the end, I'm gonna guess that it is Kay

  • WHO IS THIS? Kay or Ella?

  • This is Kay Starr!

  • oh my oh my I want music like this in my generation NOW!! I demand it! its not fair that the young ones can have this kind of music! REALMUSIC

  • I wish someone would post the one from the Harold Arlen songbook of Ella's on Verve, when Norman Granz was her manager. This chick's voice is clearly inferior to Ella's - but beyond that...singers have trademark vocal stamps imprinted all over their performances. In that spirit Ella just doesnt express herself in this manner...Ella is almost always more complicated vocally(rhythmically) and expressively than this performance.

  • This is actually not Ella, sorry to say. I can prove it. youtubedoubler(dot)com/26HL . Here are the two versions (Kay Starr's and this one) played side by side. They are identical other than the quality of the audio on this one. All the timing, vocal ornaments, and instrumental parts are exactly the same, and in case you think Kay Starr's is the mislabeled one, look on the Amazon preview for Kay Starr's version- it's this one. The only one for Ella is much different and more clearly her

  • You all really need to get your hearing checked, this is Ella without a doubt.

  • @shysmiling: This is absolutely NOT Ella Fitzgerald.

OMG, I can't believe how you all can argue just a second if this is Ella or not. This IS KAY STARR singing. This was recorded in 1945. In her early years Kay Starr was one of the most black-sounding singers I've ever heard. Listen to Charlie Barnets recording of "Sharecropper's Blues" made in 1944 here on youtoube. It's Kay Starr, the same voice. Her Voice had a strong resemblance to the early Dinah Washington but not a tiny bit to Ella.

  • Completely Ella.

  • That's Ella.

  • I've listened to both recordings by Ella and Kay Starr and they sound very similar but not exactly alike, Kay is obviously a very good singer. Is it possible that this is a case of two recordings being made of the same song because Ellas version was successful, but couldn't be played on the radio in the southern states so the record company got Kay to make a version in the same style to be played down south? I've heard of that sort of thing happening at the time.

  • This is the same version that appears under the name Kay Starr on youtube, posted by benbop1965. The trumpet solos make this quite clear. Assuming that post is accurate, this isn't Ella. When I heard the first notes of the singing, I said, that sounds a lot like Ella--but not quite. I think the difference is that Starr doesn't have Ella's top notes, and while the lower register is very similar, Starr has a little more vibrato. When you listen to the amazon sample, you can hear Ella has more top.

  • the best version for sure!

  • Very good version...I also like her song "AT LAST"....

  • This definitely is an early Ella version, and is NOT Kay Starr.

This version comes from the album "Tenderly" which is a collection of songs Ella recorded in the 1930's and 40's.

Go to amazon.com and listen to their snippet of "Stormy Weather" from the Tenderly album, and you'll see for yourself that the recording posted here is indeed Ella.

  • @aimpointvw , As you suggest , I went to Amazon, but I can't find this track on the Tenderly album. I found the kay starr track on Youtube, and it sounds almost exactly identical. This track is more HiFi, but the other is REALLY similar. Most of the available Ella versions are quite obviously newer, and different-Very clearly Ella. So I can see why there is a difference of opinion.

  • this is most definitely Kay Starr, not Ella Fitzgerald.

  • this is not ella

  • This is Kay Starr. It's absolutely beautiful, but please give the right songstress her credit. They don't have the same style anyway. Any Ella fan should be able to tell the difference.

  • very very young ella.. if ...

  • ella, lena, kay, dinah,billie...none compare to ethel waters..here is something which might be of interest to story weather fans: This is a re-release of the original recording. It was first sung at The Cotton Club by Ethel Waters in 1933 and her 1933 recording was the first.

"Ethel Waters recording of the song in 1933 was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and the Library of Congress honored the song by adding it to the National Recording Registry in 2004." (from Wikipedia)

  • search ;the mischiefs - im trouble' big tune that is aha

  • If this IS Ella, and there does seem to be a few notes and turns that ONLY ELLA does with her voice in this song, then it's an EXTREMELY YOUNG Ella!!! If not, WHO THE HECK IS KAY STARR, and where has she been all my life?!?!?

  • I bet this is not Ella

  • Kay Starr for sure.

  • ya know not even bothered whose singing it.. its great !

  • It's for sure Kay Starr!

  • I'm all with you disbeliever's - I don't have this piece in my collection! But all in all it doesn't sound like Ella!

  • ella ella ella ella xoxoxoxoxo

  • Sorry, this is not Ella....

  • @decastrobarbosa

Yes it is, buddy/lady. Ella Fitzgerald sings Harold Arlen. I've got it and it's all over the place.

  • Of course this is not ELLA, is easy to know it if you have listen to Ella, her voice is completely different !!!!

  • wow! u all know your music! you think it'd be easy to tell but I guess not - they were all good I thought; I just love this song and still listen to it today...and I just reached my 3rd decade on this earth and still love this music!!!

  • Etta James version is better.. sorry ella :)

  • @SteeRnschNuPPe

Different styles. Blues vs jazz. If you've ever heard Etta James try and sing Nearness of You, you'll know what I mean.

  • Uh, you better check that recording again 'cause this is definitely Kay Starr —Ella's voice is much richer; even in her youth and her vibrato never had that quick oscillation to it —Go to amazon and do a search in mp3 downloads and listen to Ella's version and Kay's —They're both there...

  • oh yeah ... this is THE best version. rich and real......... sweeeet

  • for all the ppl that are young like me (18) and are lucky enough to know and appreciate this music... show it to your kids!!! they will love it too and keep the chain going. dont let good music die. Especially THIS good music

  • This Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler tune was first performed in 1933 by Ethel Waters, The premier live performance by Ms. Waters was at the Cotton Club and was a huge event.

  • Stormy Weather was actually first sung by the Five sharps.

  • This is definitely ELLA FITZGERALD! No one else can sing it like this. Also, this exact version is on one of my older Ella Fitzgerald cds, it's one of her early recordings. It's Ella.

  • This is most definitely ELLA FITZGERALD singing. It's an older recording and it's on one of my cds. It's Ella.

  • This is most definitely ELLA FITZGERALD singing. It's an older recording and it's on one of my cds. It's Ella.

  • This is most definitely ELLA FITZGERALD singing. It's an older recording and it's on one of my cds. It's Ella.

  • i have the collection. this is ella. either way. fantastic song

  • Ella sounds so much better

  • type in "Stormy Weather Kay Starr" into the Youtube search box and the channel "Benbop1965" has posted this same song and it is by Kay Starr. I Pinky Promise it's not Ella folks. :-) Nevertheless, Kay Starr has a beautiful Infectious voice...I love this version.

  • @10Euphoria Benbop1965 is a dope.

  • I love this version.. I'm so sorry that a few people think that this is Kay Starr or Lena Horne as they really dont have similar voices vibrato's or singing styles as Lena is far more legato, Ella tends to sing things hott... anyhoo Lena Horne's Version "Stormy Weather" by cleesonis correct

Please give Ella the credit she most certainly deserves...

  • this ella in her 20s anyone who cant hear it aint a true fan.its the same sweet voice on tiskit tasket

  • ella sings this way better

  • bueautiful!

  • Very, very nice and soothing. True too.

  • No one...can articulate a melody line better then Ms. Fitzgerald!

    5 Stars.

  • I am glad the original poster screwed up and put Ella as the singer because otherwise, i wouldn't have known this version existed. It turns out I actually love Kay Starr's version more.

  • This is most definately Kay Starr. Please correct the name.

  • sounds like Ella

  • Hey! That's not Ella!

  • It's Ella. Love i n sound.

  • I don't care who this is, it's a great version.

  • Beautiful version, but it is NOT Ella. I have all her released recordings and this is not one of them. Very nice version though.

  • u may be right. too light.

  • No, it's Ella. I forget the date and details of the recording but with this version being on more than one Ella boxset I'd be extremely surprised if this isn't in fact her!

  • this is Kay Starr's version, i have it on a damn original cd....this ain't no Ella Fitzgerald

  • She sounds similar to Ella, but I have checked it out and this is most certainly a lady called Kay Starr. Its still a lovley version though!

  • OK. Who is the picture of then?! Same Lady different name?

  • This version of "Stormy Weather" is not by Ella Fitzgerald but by Kay Starr. It needs to be re-posted correctly.
