The 1998 Movie was better WTF are yall smokin look if you watched the series then you know they wrapped up all the alien stuff towards the end
this was a great movie digs into both mulder and scully's personalities and relationship a great ending to a great series and i felt it was well placed
i want to believe was absolutley awful.. i was a huge avid xfiles fan.. I almost feel they couldnt have done more to submarine the franchise. how is this possible? did chris carter lose his marbles? who knows.. the movie was nearly a parody of itself. what a crap plot ... i mean really? I walked out of the theater after 25 minutes....
The hardcore x-files fans is still drinking the kool aid and still insists that this film is good. I'm a x-files fan and i thought this movie sucked hard. The story was stale and unimaginative. I knew this movie would be a stand alone story but evil russian doctors, a psychic priest who molested young alter boys, and a two headed dog is not what I had in mind. After the TV show ended that's the best story that Chris Carter And Frank Spotnitz can come up with. What were these two thinking.
The murderer and the case are only the excuses so that Scully could meet father Joe and face crisis of faith. Even the name of her patient is symbolic: Christian. And he is diying. In other words: her faith is dying. At the end of the movie she recovers her faith, so it is deducted she actually saved the boy.
I think that most of the people who say the movie is bad did not really understand the movie! If you're a true XF fan watch the episode Beyond the Sea! Only then you'll understand this movie isn't really about the murderer kidnapping FBI agents, but about faith!
I don't know why they would have gone in this direction. I bought the DVD used and now I'm going to give it away. It was nothing more then a two hour tv episode. And not even one of the better ones.
xfiles rocks. It always had and it always will. We needed to know where to characters are at right now, so that they can hopefully set us up for the third one wihcih will deal with the series. and if you knew the budget that fox gave them it would most likely change your opinion. they did excellent with what they had to work with. XF3 army...believe in the future
Well i thought it was great at first, because i saw IWTB 1st then it got me into the series, bu now that im hardcore X-Phile, it does seems kinda disappointing
x-files is the best and nothing can top it, you know if they sadly make a bad movie or episode it dosn't matter because x-files fans will keep on watch anyway, becase it the BOMB!!!
The proof was in the pudding. . the very bad ratings overall, the disappointment of hard core fans. I am NOT so extreem that I will let anything go as stunning just because it has the X-files stamp on it. The movie didn't have to have the mythology but it did have to have some resemblance that I expected. It's like people who vote for one a canidate because it's in their party even tho' they don't like the canidate!! Nonsence.
I can't understand people. People were told that this was a stand-alone episode, not related to the mythology... and yet everybody I talked to after watching it (all self-professed fans who followed all the commentary leading up to its release) were disappointed that the mythology wasn't covered... were they not listening? Perhaps they hoped that the mythology would have been snuck in by the conclusion of the film...
I thought the movie was good, but I didn't go in expecting aliens.
i'm a big x-fles fan, watched all the eps and movies. This is clearly the worst of all of them. I was dead bored. And the religious under and overtones really pissed me off. 1 star.
Worship you piss me off. I am a way out there X-files fan and I came home from seeing this(one of the first person in our city) and deleted masses of my X-files files.I even wrote to studios to get this made. This was a cold, horror film. I couldn't believe CC had anything to do with it. He had years to write a good script. I feel that there were too many fingers in the pie. When it was obvious that the end was nearing, I couldn't believe it. This is it? I too felt cheated. You are delutional.
Songsmirth, It hurts to see fans rebelling so much. They took a risk on re-introducing the X-Files in a way that would hopefully lure in new fans that didn't know the mythology and to test the waters for future X-Files creations. Luckily, there still making another X-File movie (I hear rumors it might not show in theaters), this one dealing with the Mythology, but damn, fans like you really needed to support it at its time of need.
I understand why fans are a little upset but than again I am going to go ahead and say they werent true fans to begin with, hell half the episodes were "monster of the week" stand alone episodes which had nothing to do with the main storyline anyway. The first movie followed the main storyline of the show and I dont think it was that good. "I want to believe" on the other hand was a great film, I suggest anybody who is a mystery/thriller fan see this film.
Critics be damned, this was a GREAT movie. You did not even need to be a fan of the x-files to understand it and enjoy it. The whole film was about faith, "I want to believe" was obviously in reference to faith and God and not aliens. I thought it was pretty neat.
I was a Long time fan of the xfiles. And I have to say that it was bad.... really bad. Some parts.... I loved, but only becuase I loved the mulder and Scully relationship, and the characters. The plot, was utter nonscence.
And I doubt whether many non xfile fans even bothered to watch it. except a select few
I was really disapointed. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this tripe.
It was bull. And I'd rather watch the blare witch project on silent, and I really hated that film.
Rowan, what exactly was it about the film that you thought was so bad? The plot was completely understandable and coherent I do not know what you are talking about.
im an x files fan and i wasnt impressed ether. i just wrote a review on IMDB and gave it 3 stars. boring movie! it may have been an ordinary movie without mulder and scully and it would have been the same. crap
the movie was pretty slopped together but I got free tickets cause I worked at a theater I liked the movie not because it was a good movie I just liked seeing my faverate show come out with something new I'm not saying i wasn't very disapointed cause I was but its still the xfiles and still will be front and ceter (along with the rest of my xfile collection and harry potter collection)in my movie shelf.
i completely disagree, i thought it was amazing. they cant do every movie with conspiracy, anyway, how can they do a conspiracy movie when they have left the FBI?! they cant, i love the x files, watch it everyday and will keep watching it and watch the movie (when it comes out on dvd) 20 times a day!
I loved the film and I am a total x files fan and loved the fact that you didn't ave to be to go see it!! What are they on about about there not being a conspiracy how on earth could there be one if they no longer work for the FBI, u muppets!!!! I can't wait for it to come out on DvD so i can get watching it again!! Good work David, gillian and all cast & crew what a fab movie and i hope theres more to come!!
It was a total let down :( Not half as good as the first movie & nowhere near some of the most entertaining TV Episodes like "Bad Blood" & "Dreamland"
Saw the movie last night, was looking forward to it but, alas, it seemed they just found a couple of "average" scripts left over from the Scully/Mulder tv years and dusted them off, nice to catch up on old friends but not compelling...
Huge disappointment !!! The idea of creating a standalone movie, leaving only scully and mulder as a part of the x files was the biggest misatke. This movie should have been done for the fans, not for the people that have no ideea waht x files means. When I saw scully and mulder in bed together,I just watched the scene trough my fingers;for a relanshionship that have developed over 9 series,I don't believe that that's how the scene should have been made.
I think that people have been very hard on this film. It wasn't made as a big ass hollywood blockbuster type because they knew that wouldn't work, you can't have to forty somethings running around like they did when they were in their early thirties. Plus the writers screwed the series so they had to make the best of the botched ending the series had.
Why are you complaining, Carter said it was going to be like another episode so everyone could undertand it! I look forward to see it, in my countrywe have to wait till august 14...
I did not want to believe! sorry I so wanted to see this movie but I came out of it saying WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? I thought the movie was going to be like the tv show that we all loved but it kind of suck sorry! David is still hot and he and gillian was great back together I was happy to see that but get a better story line please it was bad. so that what I think of the movie.
That's so not true!!!! this movie is awesome... just for smart people anyway,,, if you say is stupid.. well you just didn't get it... go see it!!! is amazing...
I felt very cheated too. I kind of thought i would feel that way. They could make a hundred movies and not one would be as good as the show. They just cant go back now. Still it was nice to see where the characters are at this point.
I would watch this sexy duo read a phonebook, so to say that this movie is worth seeing is a mass understatement. GO. GO NOW! We need a third movie, y'all!!! =D
Did it bother anyone that the black market organ thieves were plotting to do a "body transplant" on their sick comrad using a young womans body? The fact that he was gay, is that to suggest that this would be a radical form of sex change?
You see his severed head with the blood tubes and then her body is being prepped to remove her head---what conclusion would you draw?
How about a real conspiracy? That is the essence of the x-files.
Don't knock it till you've tried it, my friend. What the movie first then decide if it's crap. It is very different from the first movie and the series.
Any episode of season 1 to 7 is better than this. It's like the script and production were made by 80-year-old men. There are pretty decent teams out there like the smallville one. I would have hired those guys to make the movie.
Hey, Mr. Chris Carter!!!! Bring back the series and you'll make up for the money and time we (and you) wasted on this film. Ok, so seeing Mulder and Scully back together again was awesome.. though their chemistry seemed a bit awkward and seemingly waning. They should have cut Gillian's hair too, that hair length threw me off and made her look way older, and Scully has the same haircut in x-files throughout the seasons. It was hotter, she was nerdier - the film lacked that spark.
I just don't understand why they had to make the movie so "blah", it's almost like Mr. Carter was all excited in the beginning of making this movie - just as most of us fans were at the mere first notes of the theme song we heard on the trailer months back - but you can almost see how what started out as a great idea turned into a dull, uninspired, mediocre thriller by the roll of the credits. They could have told this story in a 45 minute episode... and it would have been better delivered.
I gave this movie a 4. You ask what kind of rating system is that? It goes from 0 to 5 with 0 being the best and it is based upon the number of times I look at my watch during the movie. This one could have earned a 5 if it had lasted any longer. What do you all think of my rating system?
i love the movie!!! far better than that joker movie with the other guy in his new suit. i bet y'all disappointed just coz u've just seen the dark knight, and expected another action packed flick. to quote roger ebert: "the movie works like thrillers used to work, before they were required to contain villains the size of buildings".
I've been an X-Files fan since day one. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. The worst episode of the TV series was light years better than this movie. The plot was awful. Lots of snow and darkness. Really bad.
If a friend of mine told me he spent the last three months watching all 9 seasons of the X Files in preparation for the movie, I would bet my lifes savings that he was going to be disappointed. Kind of hard to live up to that kind of hype. I was kind of glad that the movie was getting bad buzz, because I just got back from seeing it, and I thought it was good solid entertainment.
I BELIEVE that the sense of this movie was actually to prepare the audience for more movies to come! It was like setting the scene for the two main characters, because that is important for the continuation of the show. The next movie, if there's gonna be one, will for sure be a mythical one, with lots of conspiration stuff! I'm sure as hell!
But apart from that, I think the movie was nice! Like the good old episodes.
the film was meant to be released in 2001 but it was experiencing a movie industry problem called development hell and the movie was in development hell for 6 years
I'll take XF2 any day! All that has been put out by the movie industry has sucked for that last few years. The whole Mulder & Scully relationship has evolved & didn't leave me wanting. I thought the movie was suspenseful from beginning to end.
Did I feel cheated? No. I thought it was so freakin awesome to see Mulder and Scully back again after all these years. The plot and the overall X-Files feel is not all lost. I'd give the film a 3/5. Dissapointing though as a 'movie'...
Oh, and if you're reading these comments to figure out whether you should see it or not, just see it. The opinions are very divided, so there's no way to know whether you'll like it or not. Just don't expect anything really "Saw" scary or explosion action-y. I'd describe it as a mystical mystery, lol.
Also notice here that a lot of the people that didn't like it are incredibly mean to the people that did, so you can take that with a grain of salt.
I don't know what these people saw, but I friggin loved the movie. Although, I knew it was gonna be standalone before I went, so I didn't have those expectations.
The guy that watched every single episode again really should have done the five minutes of internet research to figure out he didn't have to do that.
Also, I loved the fact that it was like another episode. That's what I wanted! The episodes were almost always great, and the movie was fantastic.
The X-Files wasn't always about the alien conspiracy, in fact, less than a third of all the 201 episodes were connected to the mythology. Even so, this movie is a complete and total letdown. It didn't respect the characters situations after the series finale, and there are dozens of MOTW episodes better than this. Chris Carter is a disgrace to his own creation.
Horrible movie. Save your money for the rental. There wasn't even any paranormal alien activity. WTF?! Definitely rental quality and this is coming from a X-file enthusiast.
Worst attempt at a movie ever! Considering the X-Files saga has so much potential, this was a complete and utter failure in every way imaginable. Those of you who think otherwise should be abducted by aliens and never brought back to Earth!
Why do people keep saying its like a long TV episode. The first film was no more than a long cheap-looking episode. Why would anyone think this was going to be different?
I loved it too. The fact that they worked so hard to please the fans with Mulder and Scully reprising their roles in such a great way was amazing. I loved the banter. I was waiting for Mulder to need Scully to save him and when that happened, I knew we were home. Let's give them some of the love they gave us people.
Stick to the first 4 seasons of the show, especially the first 2 seasons... That's the real 'The X-Files'. From LA on the show self destructed and became unbearable. This movie is a joke.
I think the 6th season had some great episodes... It's my favourite season... Arcadia, How the Ghosts Stole Christmas, and Field Trip are some of my favourite episodes and they are from season 6... Season 7 had some good ones too... I didn't care too much for seasons 8 and 9 when Mulder left though.
well, if you watch the show more for the standalone episodes, then i think season 6 was actually one of the best. and the mythology was still entertaining but not at it's peak.
I saw this movie not expecting a whole lot because the first xfiles movie was garbage, but let me tell you no movie has ever made me wish I was covered in bees in the middle of traffic as much as this one. It surpasses all boundaries of bad movies, and I don't care how big of a fan you are of the show, you have to expect to at least get some entertainment out of a movie when you go to see it. I would give this movie -5 on any scale. And I saw it for free.
If they had interviewed me, I'd have told them that I loved it. I'm a huge fan of The X-Files, and I wasn't disappointed. If you had read articles about it before it was released you would have known that it was meant to be like a standard episode so that fans could see a sort of bonus episode, and so that non-fans could still understand the plot.
With all of these huge movies like The Dark Knight coming out, people expected this film to be similar, but that is just not what The X-Files is.
I hate it when people think that we have to compare it to other films that come out at the same time. I certainly don't! But I do compare it to other X-Files episodes and this film was very boring and it had a weak plot, too. Out of 126 episodes {plus or minus} I would put this one at 127. I was hoping for more but I got less. And I am sad that this was so lame.
Sorry but I watched ALL 9 years of episodes recently while ill and 90% of the "Episodes" were so much better than this movie. I did LOVE seeing Mulder and Scully again, though so in that sense (only) it wasn't a waste of money but then I'm older and have some money to waste. If you don't - rent the DVD
I guess I'm pretty much alone in this... I've seen every single episode, most of them more than once, and some of the better ones probably over 20 times...
Maybe I was just too excited about seeing Mulder and Scully again after 6 years... but I really liked the film...
NO, you are not alone. This movie was amazing! Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz did an amazing job writing the script, and David & Gillian made it all come alive. This film was amazing! Their on screen chemistry didn't go away after the past six years. This movie exceeded my expectations, and I'm glad it happened. us REAL x-philes will get that 3rd movie.
I'm not sure if they'll want to make another film since so many people weren't impressed with this one. :( Still, I know that I would love to see another one...
I'm glad to see that some more people besides myself liked the movie though. :)
I agree with Phenomenon3Studio and GroundForLife27...This was a waste of money, especailly MINE! If your a die hard fan save your money and wait for it to come out on DVD but even then your wasting your money. I was hoping it would get better but it never did. It was just a dull episode put on the big screen. Chris Carter needed some extra cash so he pitched it and 20th Century Fox bought it...hook, line, and sinker. Great sales pitch, Chris. You should be proud of yourself.
I have to agree with most of what I have read from other fans. This movie was a dissapointment. An I watched all 9 seasons I was only like 9 when they aired for the first time. They could have done so much better.
Yes, he could have. That's the point. Isn't it funny, in life, when your hungry you do your best work. But once you get the fame and fortune the work becomes secondary. eg: Billy Joel, Elton John, Smashing pumpkins, The Simpsons, and Chris Carter.

Huge disappointment !!!
yonodo 3 years ago
I think that people have been very hard on this film. It wasn't made as a big ass hollywood blockbuster type because they knew that wouldn't work, you can't have to forty somethings running around like they did when they were in their early thirties. Plus the writers screwed the series so they had to make the best of the botched ending the series had.

Agreed. Acting, sucked. Editing, sucked. Story, sucked. Directing, sucked. Music, sucked. Please, leave the series alone.

Any episode of season 1 to 7 is better than this. It's like the script and production were made by 80-year-old men. There are pretty decent teams out there like the smallville one. I would have hired those guys to make the movie.

woah hold on there skipper...
smallville is for pre pubescent girls and hormonally challenged teens...
chris carter is 10x a better writer than the smallville team, if THEY were the ones who actually did it it would be too stupid
101piesaregood 3 years ago 2
It was hotter, she was nerdier - the film lacked that spark.
williamslettuce 3 years ago
I just don't understand why they had to make the movie so "blah", it's almost like Mr. Carter was all excited in the beginning of making this movie - just as most of us fans were at the mere first notes of the theme song we heard on the trailer months back - but you can almost see how what started out as a great idea turned into a dull, uninspired, mediocre thriller by the roll of the credits. They could have told this story in a 45 minute episode... and it would have been better delivered.
williamslettuce 3 years ago
I gave this movie a 4. You ask what kind of rating system is that? It goes from 0 to 5 with 0 being the best and it is based upon the number of times I look at my watch during the movie. This one could have earned a 5 if it had lasted any longer. What do you all think of my rating system?
admanwpb 3 years ago
it was pretty weak, if they cut out the romance parts it would be like one not very good episode of any season

I remember watching the first X-files episode and being hooked, but as for this movie...meh.
Its a great crime thriller but the X-files is about conspiracy, aliens, monsters etc and without them it just isn't the X-files.
Its kind of like how they left all the gadgets out of Casino Royal, good story, but just not James Bond.

i love the movie!!! far better than that joker movie with the other guy in his new suit. i bet y'all disappointed just coz u've just seen the dark knight, and expected another action packed flick. to quote roger ebert: "the movie works like thrillers used to work, before they were required to contain villains the size of buildings".

About 20 minutes into this nonsensical snooze-fest, I turned to my friend and said, "The X-Files: I Want To Be Leaving."

Oh, and if you're reading these comments to figure out whether you should see it or not, just see it. The opinions are very divided, so there's no way to know whether you'll like it or not. Just don't expect anything really "Saw" scary or explosion action-y. I'd describe it as a mystical mystery, lol.
Also notice here that a lot of the people that didn't like it are incredibly mean to the people that did, so you can take that with a grain of salt.
oywidapoodles 3 years ago
I don't know what these people saw, but I friggin loved the movie. Although, I knew it was gonna be standalone before I went, so I didn't have those expectations.
The guy that watched every single episode again really should have done the five minutes of internet research to figure out he didn't have to do that.
Also, I loved the fact that it was like another episode. That's what I wanted! The episodes were almost always great, and the movie was fantastic.
oywidapoodles 3 years ago
The X-Files wasn't always about the alien conspiracy, in fact, less than a third of all the 201 episodes were connected to the mythology. Even so, this movie is a complete and total letdown. It didn't respect the characters situations after the series finale, and there are dozens of MOTW episodes better than this. Chris Carter is a disgrace to his own creation.

RexLaboro 3 years ago
I loved it too. The fact that they worked so hard to please the fans with Mulder and Scully reprising their roles in such a great way was amazing. I loved the banter. I was waiting for Mulder to need Scully to save him and when that happened, I knew we were home. Let's give them some of the love they gave us people.

Stick to the first 4 seasons of the show, especially the first 2 seasons... That's the real 'The X-Files'. From LA on the show self destructed and became unbearable. This movie is a joke.

5th season had some great moments as well. It was the 6th season that went downhill.
theplaneshift 3 years ago
I think the 6th season had some great episodes... It's my favourite season... Arcadia, How the Ghosts Stole Christmas, and Field Trip are some of my favourite episodes and they are from season 6... Season 7 had some good ones too... I didn't care too much for seasons 8 and 9 when Mulder left though.
queequeg8942 3 years ago
well, if you watch the show more for the standalone episodes, then i think season 6 was actually one of the best. and the mythology was still entertaining but not at it's peak.

NinjaBunny75 3 years ago
If they had interviewed me, I'd have told them that I loved it. I'm a huge fan of The X-Files, and I wasn't disappointed. If you had read articles about it before it was released you would have known that it was meant to be like a standard episode so that fans could see a sort of bonus episode, and so that non-fans could still understand the plot.
With all of these huge movies like The Dark Knight coming out, people expected this film to be similar, but that is just not what The X-Files is.
queequeg8942 3 years ago 2
I hate it when people think that we have to compare it to other films that come out at the same time. I certainly don't! But I do compare it to other X-Files episodes and this film was very boring and it had a weak plot, too. Out of 126 episodes {plus or minus} I would put this one at 127. I was hoping for more but I got less. And I am sad that this was so lame.
fmscribs 3 years ago
Sorry but I watched ALL 9 years of episodes recently while ill and 90% of the "Episodes" were so much better than this movie. I did LOVE seeing Mulder and Scully again, though so in that sense (only) it wasn't a waste of money but then I'm older and have some money to waste. If you don't - rent the DVD
nancydrew50 3 years ago
I guess I'm pretty much alone in this... I've seen every single episode, most of them more than once, and some of the better ones probably over 20 times...
Maybe I was just too excited about seeing Mulder and Scully again after 6 years... but I really liked the film...
queequeg8942 3 years ago
NO, you are not alone. This movie was amazing! Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz did an amazing job writing the script, and David & Gillian made it all come alive. This film was amazing! Their on screen chemistry didn't go away after the past six years. This movie exceeded my expectations, and I'm glad it happened. us REAL x-philes will get that 3rd movie.
