For all the young bucks out there (fyi), Blue Thunder was a movie in 1983 that kicked off these super copter TV series i.e, Blue Thunder and Airwolf. The idea of a kick-butt helicopter was a novel, exciting idea at the time. (still is I guess)

Loved this show! Used to hear a lot about how this was an imitation of BlueThunder, but I was like, "So what!". Blue Thunder didn't last that long in Nashville, coming on on Friday nights (Miami Vice stole all of it's thunder and sent it to play with the dinosaurs). But, Airwolf came on Saturday nights, and lasted for a good little while. And, it was one of the best shows that came on on Saturday night!

I remember this episode from years ago . The bad guy duels Airwolf at the end in his highly inappropriate piston engined plane. At one point the question is asked, won't airwolf easily beat that thing and the planes owner says something like "It's the plane that gives me the edge" Never forget that.

Actually - that was Mach 0.8 displayed in the intro. It was known to exceed the speed of sound sometimes - decidedly not something that's going to happen with the blades intact - mach 0.8 is still about 500 knots, give or take. The fastest choppers are around Mach 0.3. (Lynx and Mi-24)

There actually was a helicopter that could do it. The only problem is it never went into full development.  A variation of the "Cheyenne" design, the helicopter was more of a pusher gyrocopter (meaning the main blades weren't always powered) that was more manueverable than the Apache. But, the apache won, and the variant was scrapped.

actually it seems to reach a colossal mach 8, what you probably don't realise is that there are huge fuel tanks that power those little rockets on the side hidden within the helicopter and it is aerodynamically designed to break orbit from earth if neccessary. If only the design for this chopper hadn't been lost in a freak boating accident involving that guy with the massive eyebrows.
