  • I don't consider it weird, just very allegorical. It shows her range of vocals very well, especially het lyric soprano descant in the recording. =^..^*=

  • she sang that, just lovely!

  • I've been listen this in to some point in my life... Its the first time that I saw who sang this song :D

  • I love this song!!!

  • I was a soldier for a long time, most of the time all we had was music, different kind of whore

  • This song is such a story of my life in many forms right from the beginning of it... Actually in the throes of writing my biography with the same title...

  • WInes are better aged...I never thought that it could also be true when it comes to this song and this wonderful singer.

  • this is a do over

  • To have a family is a kind of sacrifice, for both men and women. Selfish people today will not understand the feeling. They will only take but never give. I love this song and I love the bold statement in the lyrics.

  • this is my all time favourite song.. Its so meaningful!

  • Charlene - I've Never Been To Me (Live)

  • y'all dont really get it- she's talking about her relationship with her mom, which is not what she wishes it should be. due to that she's been searching for herself all over the world basically, but never found herself. until she realized she's not gonna find herself by travelling to all these places, but only by reevaluating her relationship with her mother/parents.

or maybe, thats how i interpret it because thats what my life is like. but i'm pretty sure she meant it that way

  • @amyyyamy sorry i think you read into it what you wanted to read...........i think this is about the characters wasted life...............make peace with your mom if theres still time........

  • she's talking about my life!!!

  • i just love it

  • Good song!

  • love the song ..reminds me a lot back t in my high school days

  • I love this song so much for more than 20 years. Great performance

  • God this song always gets to me! **sniffle sniffle**

  • It would take me some years to like this song and when I finally bought a Motown Complation of hits in the late 80s I was laying on the couch dozing off to sleep and this song came on and i fell in love with it. I forgot what year it was a hit but it still holds up and its one of those songs that makes you really listen to. The words are very strong and Charlene sings this wonderfully.

  • BIG WOW!!!

  • One of the best songs in history...fuck all the negative bullshit to each his own...dont like it go listen to the shit music eminem, rhianna, britney sucky ass music.!!!! You Go Charlene beautiful voice...God Bless our country for music like yours and have mercy for whats out there today lmfao ha!!!!!

  • @onesecond2sixty AMEN! Give Charlene a break! I have to say this song isn't the best, and most definitely not her best. She sings much more beautiful songs than just this one.

  • Leave this song to the Temptations

  • @raglandcarl1

    word!

  • @raglandcarl1 The Tempts sang this very well. I have to say Charlene didn't do a bad job either. It was a bigger hit for her then it was for the Temptations. She still looks good for her age!!

  • "a weird song" discription from who uploaded this rare vid??!!!

  • it really is a pretty song.......and 2:36 to 2:44 is the very reason it's not popular today.....sing it louder Char', sing it louder!!!!!

  • @MrChicago891 which is a joke in my opinion, people think it's about abortion which it's totally not! It's means that she gave up the thought of having kids so she could do other things in her life without having the responsibilty of needing to care for her kids

  • @Defensewhiz ........yes a selfishly enjoying ones life & findindg out you have nothing & accomplished nothing but wasting your life

  • Thumbs up if you're only here because of Black Books.

  • At a certain point in life, especially when the decade numbers are getting higher, just about everyone -men or women- looks back & assesses things, & often there is a lot to be proud & a lot of things you'd do differently. She took the independent route of going where she wanted, doing what she wanted, not answering to anyone & not letting anyone control her, & yet she is still kind of empty. You can only live one life in a lifetime. It's not anti-woman-it's simply "The grass is always greener".

  • @jacquesjunk So Well Said...........this song brings a tear to my eye everytime i listen to it.......i wish for everyone to listen to this & consider thier lifes paths.....

  • The moving finger writes and having writ, moves on.

  • what a fabulous lyrics,..the message of the song is so touching.,.best ever!

  • what a fabulous lyrics,..the lyrics so touching.,the best ever song of charlene!

  • Way much better version than the 82nd version. I just love this song.

  • What an sappily idiotic piece of anti-woman propaganda this is. I'm not surprised to learn it was written by a man.

  • @LanguorousLass You are clearly full of shit.

  • cheese

  • Charlene truly shows her talent in this "unplugged" version. The song has mellowed along with the artist. Love her vibe-a beautiful woman who sings with great passion.

  • best song ever! love the spoken bridge!!!

  • this new version has so much emotion compared to the 82 version

  • Why is it that people listen to the hundreds of words in this song and only remember "subtle whoring"?

  • @morgan4xl

    I don't, I remember her being " undressed by kings "

  • @QueenReigns1

Yes, and "slurped champaign from a shoe" might be another fine example

  • @DownNeptune

    I think you'll find it's...sipped champagne on a yacht...unless you've heard an alternative version.

  • The deepest song I've ever heard about distinguishing ficttional sweet from realitiy that could potentially be sweet if we just belive :)

  • this is a really beautiful rendition of this song. Charlene's voice has matured and she shows herself to be a true singer. Love the piano work too. Thanks for posting.

  • Honest songs, are rare. Thanks, Charlene.

  • So Charlene Duncan got back into the business??

  • i love this song thanks....

  • very simple arrangement with just piano she shows a great song is still great

  • my absolute favorite for all the yeras since 1967

  • Great lyrics, is it her only hit ?

  • when did she perform this song on video

  • oh my god, i cant believe she was a whore who had abortions just cos she wanted money and the GOOD LIFE. she looks too young to have done all that. she still pretty though and amazing voice. Whats she complaining for. Id take cocks and money and travelling any day over a wining screaming little brat of a baby. arggghhh, thank god im never gonna have kids. bring on the whoring and getting undressed by kings, drinking champagne. much much more interesting.

  • @jeramiah85

A baby won't always be a whining screaming little brat, but by the sound of it, you'll always be a whore.

  • i really love this song, especially the lyrics. but i prefer the original version. from the videos i watched, i think charlene is even more beautiful now :)

  • MEGUMI SHINA

    Love Is All

  • @thediscerningviewer ... I dont think this is a very weird song at all.

  • Great song but not as great as her original version. Why do artists find it necessary to change something that was perfect?

  • I agree with you. this has been a long-time source of irritation for me. then again, she does not distort the original nearly as much as some singers do with their respective songs

  • Most people today that don't like this song, don't even know why. It's because they're accustomed to being spoon-fed lyrics that are as shallow as a water puddle. This was written in a time when the listener had to put a little thought to what the writer was trying to get across. This writer did an excellent job and the few of us used to "finding" the song meaning like it.

Great piano work here too! This guy plays with a lot of feeling... would be nice to hear him to some instrumental work.

  • no wonder i like this song so much, because I like depth, to have my mind stimulated. also, of course, the music is beautiful

  • when was this performance done?

  • she looks like wowa from agua bendita lol

  • This is a song that Lea Michele should sing on Glee!

  • @Pookatube

    get a grip

lea has some pipes, but no where near the acting ability to handle a lyric as complex as this

  • The song was re-released in 1982, after DJ Scott Shannon at Tampa's WRBQ -- who was one of the most powerful jocks in the country, back when that phrase still had meaning -- started playing the everloving shit out of it, and revved up such a groundswell or popularity that her label re-released it.

  • what doe shit have to do with it?

  • I remember seeing this song on TOTP2 when i was about 12 and loving it.. 12 years later, I still like it but I wish she'd keep her hands still when she's singing! it's really distracting and annoying. She do that THAT much when she was younger.

  • nice

  • always love this song... time after time... original for my age then, this version for my age now... touch!

  • ive never thought that she would live her career so early .. ive miss her singing this song .. one time hit wonder .. T_T

  • she's not a prostitute... as a matter of fact, this is a rich woman talking down to another rich girl... telling her, sex and money ain't everything in this world... yeah... more like Ivana Trump giving advice to Paris Hilton...

  • Comment removed

  • เพลงดี

  • she looks so different here... did she had plastic surgery? i'm just asking

  • This song is about a high class model/prostitute, who regrets the emptiness of her past life of glamour, who regrets the many abortions she did, and who wants to become a little housewife.

  • @corioliscircle

RATFALMAO The song is written by a man. Maybe a woman who was a bit of a socialite. Maybe she made love to a lot of people and never settled down with anyone. Prostitute? Holey Mackerel. She'd pussy-whip you. Unlikely this chick had abortions - probably just on the pill and never settled long enough to turn something into a long-term relationship.

  • i think i like the original version more. this song is very beautiful. the first ever song i recorded from our little radio and tried to write down and memorize the lyrics.

  • ..aha nice song.

  • How sad & tragic. Terrible song that would appeal to lost, needy, insecure women. Let's all breed, stay home in the kitchen, wash our husbands dirty underpants, then die. This is the only way to happiness & enlightenment! Ugh! I feel so ill..

  • To the contrary, she is lamenting the fact that she bought into the lie that is liberated feminism.

  • Great comment ..GBM

  • @missdemeanour555

you are so narrow-minded...for saying those things.

  • @DonLouiVer

    You crack me up Don.

  • @missdemeanour555

Amen! Keep em barefoot and pregnant. let's have a song about a 50 year old stay at home mom whose husband left her for a 25 year old, and now she has no job history or income.

  • @GotTheMethod

Yeah! She also has no house to live in & 4 kids to feed. HAHA.

  • @missdemeanour555 Many people feel this way--men and women. TV says it isn't fashionable, though, so... so what? These feelings must be eradicated? Only insecure people want and need family, loved ones? It's yet more insecure to have--and openly express!--desires not endorsed by everyone else? Or, Might you have to be secure to sing about your individual needs in front of... well, *you*, ...and insecure to heckle those who are brave enough to do so? No worries; no one needs you to breed! <3.
  • donny says i like this song

  • Thankyou. How beautiful

  • i sing this on SINGSTAR my mates think im sad ..but i love it :-)

  • yeah...although i'm no woman ;) just made me sad... made me doubt my plans of "prendre le large" and go away from home... are the things that might wait for me worth giving up the things i already have? ;) ... hope someday i'll be able to say "i've been to me" ...

  • this has always been my favorite song ever...

  • Very meaningful and smoothing song!

  • so 80s

  • its cheesy but cute

  • One of the best songs ever! Good to see that she is still alive.

  • Ive been undressed by kings and Ive seen some things that a woman aint supposed to see. What, like a 12" DONG?????

  • is they not a male version of this song?

  • what's the meaning of 'I've never been to me"?

  • @plaplaandtoto it has a vague meaning individually each person might have a different meaning. For my own definition, I define "I've never been to me" as not giving ourselves the opportunity to truly find who we are inside--knowing who are. See how Charlene refers to all place she'd been and all things she did. All these, it made she sees paradise, but she never know who is inside. Hope it gets you an idea what it means.

  • @plaplaandtoto It means Ive never played with my clit !!!!

  • This song describes practically every movie plot on the lifetime channel.

  • hahahaha!!!! Good one....this song makes want to vomit!!!

  • @mehlert52 Love the comment. As soon as I read it several 'made for TV' movie stars flashed before my eyes.

  • 我覺得呢首歌好好聽呀!

  • its a song its not real life!!

  • unfortunatly it is....more than hollywood films

  • Is it just me who would be a bit wary of taking advice about life from someone who thinks Greece is an island?

  • lol there's a difference between calling Greece an Island or saying "the Isles of Greece" makes me think we should be wary of the advice of someone that doesn't know their geography.

  • Technically, it should be "the sea close to the islands surrounding the Greek mainland, where we sipped Champagne on a yacht....

Although that would lose the melody a bit...

    :-)

  • WTF!!!!@!!

  • just goes to show anyone can be a whore!!

  • She's probably too expensive for you.

  • It's a beautiful song >> I've Never Been To Me ∩_∩

  • This is one of those lost songs for me. I could not think of the name and very few of the words and then in Shrek there it was! I was so happy to find my song at last. It meant a lot to me when I was young and now it means more to me. What I get from this song is not to lose yourself...in relationships or the pursuit of happiness but to realize what you have may be the best for you. Not to say we shouldn't dream.

  • DONE VERY NICE

  • Such a wonderful voice and still as beautiful as in 82. I was only a child but I loved your melody and appreciate 100 times more now.

  • VERY NICE JOB WELL DONE

  • this is someone who can't turn back the clock and would dearly love to change or be giving another chance to be just "me" herself/himself even

  • @f11g9f7 and yet sadly, if she did turn back the clock, it would probably be 'subtle whoring' all over again.

  • She got angelic voice & touching too!!!

  • 47 year old male now but I bought this when it first came out. Northern soul 'cool boy' at that time but nothing will hit me as this record does. You enjoy life and then it's gone. The only fool was you but you never knew it. ... Brilliantly sad!!!

  • i agree, its a song for those who have regrets about life, those who spent their youth on the superficialities of life.. only to realize their folly later on... it's a nostalgia on the folly of youth... sad but wonderful...

  • You must have one wierd mom!

  • zapkvr ~ i interpret this as her trying to find herself (inwardly). You don't have to be all the things she is and has done. The secret of life is getting to know your Inner Master ~ the God Within.....

  • L-O-L!!

  • I want to meet Charlene. Is there any possibility of this?

  • Anything is possible. Go for it!

  • @englishman1960 SURE - her real name is Charlene Marilynn D'Angelo - and this song was released (by Motown) TWICE - the first time - nothing - the second time it was a milion seller!!!! Then Cahrlend Duncan became Charlene Oliver - married Jeff Oliver in England where she lives today!!!!

  • @Earthlinked Also - the song was originally written by a man - for his point of view - but changed - Charlene DID NOT write the song!!!!!!!

  • @englishman1960 NO ABSOLUTELY NOT! GET BACK TO WORK!

  • @englishman1960 yea i'm her agent give me your details and i'll try and arrange it

  • This is one of my favorite songs but you have to read between the lines. This came out back in the day when women had very set roles and responsibilities and to stray from the "norm" was frowned upon. Women today, thank God, have more freedom to act on their desires.

  • lol what you on about? back in the day when women had set roles???? it's only the bloody late 70's early 80's!, the days your on about was the 50's, Flower power in the 60's fcuked all the stereotypicical BS away for ever

  • Never been to me? it's a story of people that put others before themselves, even today people get into relationships and are then stuck there, never having time to enjoy themselves or do the things they need to do, i'd have thought that with the many teenage parents today, this song is even more significant, especially when they get to a point when they realise they have missed so much in life, sorry to those that are happy with that way of life, but the songs not about the contented ones!

  • DEEP

  • the very nice, tender song, with a deep sense within

  • "..i shared my problem to his friend and he let me cry in his shoulder..and i was tempted that time...and we "MADE LOVE THAT NIGHT

  • Gosh! Why say this is a weird song?

It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I think she's trying to communicating something right from the bottom of her heart and all women should try to listen.

  • agreed u can play this song on Wii Music

  • she seems depressed all the song is about having a baby/ making love she is a freako?!?!

  • she seems to have changed her style of singing. Now seems like more R&B to me

  • Wow, I didn't realise Jerry Springer was such a good piano player!!!!!

  • i bet the suicidal rate was high when this song came out.

  • Lmao.

  • what's with all these bad comments

i mean like all she's saying is about material pleasures geez

--and its not a weird song o_o

  • maybe people today are too literal (dumb?) to read between the lines (heck the meaning isn't even *that* between-the-lines) to figure out what the lyrics are about?

  • Or maybe... today's women are generally far ,pre unrestricted than even in the liberated 70s so people don't really get what she's singing about anymore.

  • far *more* unrestricted...

  • I personally think it's the adage 'learn from other people's mistakes' put into song...

  • i have been to paradise but i have not been to myself

  • Guys, this song bacame a hit because it is so ridiculous that it becomes funny. It is CAMP. It tells the story of a high class prostitute who teaches a housewife how to enjoy her life and be happy with what she has.

  • Camp is an aesthetic sensibility wherein something is appealling because of its bad taste and ironic value. When the usage appeared, in 1909, it denoted: ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical, effeminate, and homosexual behaviour, and, by the middle of the 1970s, the definition comprised: banality, artifice, mediocrity, and ostentation so extreme as to have perversely sophisticated appeal. (per wikipedia)

  • I thought that camp meant a week in the woods.

  • shortened version of mellancamp

  • She the original singer of that song . kind of big name in 70-80"s.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!! it's kinda weird and she's not the best singer, but the song is deep.

  • its a good advice from a expirianced "free" woman to a joung one that is about to throw here live away folowing the same invanitys as the elder one.....

  • Yes, because women are only truly completed by being domestic slaves and subscribing to their gendered role in a patriarchal culture that dictates what they do and all that they can be.
