You know Anthony Call (Herb) was a wonderful antagonist in this scene. It does take two and though Judith Light is the highlight of the scene, she had help.
One of the best moments in soap television! I was (still am) a huge fan of Judith Light. I remember crying when it was announced Judith Light was leaving OLTL.
@brinpol Correct. The summer before this scene aired, Viki saw Karen in the lobby of the Wallington Hotel with Marco Dane (Karen's pimp). Viki confronted her later, and Karen admitted to Viki that she was a prostitute and Marco was blackmailing her. Viki vowed to keep her secret and warned Marco to stay away from Karen. Shortly thereafter, Marco wound up dead... of course, it turned out to be Marco's twin brother, Mario, who died--- not Marco.

Something has to be done to save this show. OLTL has helped me bond with my mother. I love the Ford brothers and Starr and Viki and Dorian and Rex and Gigi and Todd and Tea. I even like Echo. I've never known life without ONE LIFE TO LIVE. How can we save it? I feel so small - like I have no say. How do we band together to save this show? I've never wanted a miracle more than one to help save this little show that has made such a huge impact on my life. HELP!
WOW!!!!!! Judith is just amazing! It was cool to see her in this scene. I was so used to her in WTB? and her tv movies but damn I got goosebumps watching this! She is my all time favorite actress! I wish we could see more of her scenes throughout her years on OLTL.
Agreed: Reba is an obnoxious, abrasive hick (and her show was one of the stupidest ever on TV), but, Jesus! Judith LIght was amazing as Karen. (I have to say, Vicki needed a better lawyer than Paul Martin!) So glad Judith has had a long career and continues to work.
I totally disagree with your assessment of Reba. Before you label people please make sure you know the definition of the label. A hick is an unintelligent person with no interest in culture. Reba is very intelligent and has more money than you and I put together. Me and my family loved her show and I think she's a very genuine person. It is sad how harsh and mean people can be over the internet. I hope you are a better person in your real life.
Look up the definition of hick. Reba does not fit that label and she like Judith are one my favorite celebrities. At least she carries herself in a positive manner. I don't understand how people can be so critical of someone they never met. You don't have to like her but God don't call her names.
It would be extremely difficult for any actress to pull off this scene without it coming across like overacting. Judith Light managed to transcend acting and make it look like she herself was confessing to being a prostitute rather than her character. It's so raw and real.
I like the pause before she confesses where you can read in her face, "This is a life destroying sentence and I won't be able to take it back."
Hell, this may be the best moment in ALL of television history. At least in television acting. There are no words to describe Judith Light's amazing talent.
do you know what year Marco found out about Niki Smith? That must have been great watching. i don't remember seeing that story--must have been away at school.
Hands down, one of the greatest actresses ever in daytime. She is an elite actress. And there are very, very few on that level in daytime today -- actresses like Susan Flannery, Erika Slezak and Robin Strasser are at the elite level.
But you are hard pressed to find any others. This is one of the greatest scenes in daytime history.
Interesting thoughts...yes i think they finally gave Lucci the award b/c she was nominated so many times and even though Dierdre always had a following i don't think she was ever nominated; however i have seen some clips of Dierdre where her acting scenes were very emotional and realistic and i thought quite good.
this was on of OLTL best court scenes. Both Judith and Calison were both sensational. He was brutal to her, but J. Light showed her true talent.Fantastic. And yes, Tina (Andrea Evens) was shown near the end. But Y was Vicki on trail 4 murder?? Did Nicki Smith supposedly do it? I remember when Vicki became Nicky in the 'secret room'!! (I loved the secret room, near Eterna??)
Normally I find scenes like that in soaps over the top but Judith must have reached inside herself and pulled those emotions out of her. That was brilliant and completely believable.
This brings back so many memories, I watched this episode with my mother and noone was breathing! Judith Light was and still is a stellar actor in the industry! Does anybody remember her Lifetime movies?
What happened to the other clips of Judith as Karen that were up? I want to see more of her during here time on the show, especially scenes with her and Larry and Karen and Marco.
my god!!!!!!! This scene is so good I need a smoke!!!!!!!! I remember watching this when it first aired in 1979.Judith light and the late great Gerald anthony were the best things to ever happen to oltl. The show was never as good before or after they were on it!Gerald anthony never got the credit or recognition he so richly deserved, the media choose tony geary as the poster boy for changing daytime as the anti-hero luke spencer.Marco dane was the first anti hero of daytime!Karen and marco rock!
Man, I loved this episode! What a reveal! Soap Opera as it ought to be! Judith Light delivered one hell of a powerful performance! She was broken down on the witness stand, but she also was kicking butt and naming names! Talbot Huddleston, one of the most wealthy men in Llanview, had his reputation destroyed nice and proper and was also sent to the slammer! Good riddance to him! Also loved Reba McEntire's commentary! She had a lot of fun doing that.
Judith Light deserves her own star on the Walk of Fame. She's a brilliant actor, has incredible staying power and does so much for different social causes. It's high time corporate Hollywood gives her A-list recognition.
Herb Callison & Karen Wolek...wow, I remember being completely gripped by this storyline back in the 70s. If OLTL were still like this, I'd still be watching :)
Classsic thats all i can say, i was only 2 1/2 years old at the time and i am glad to be able to see this. I use to love this soap i stop watching it when they changed todd
I remember this as if it was yesterday. I was in college and took lunch at 1 pm to watch this with other students. Today's storylines are nowhere near as compelling. Today's young actors could take a page from this video. Judith Light rocks!
thank you so much. I remember Jenny and I forgot her name? She had to give her little girl up because Karen switched her baby with another when it died right? Whatever happened to Jenny I can't remember did she die or leave town?
jasoncarly...for the life of me I can't remember what happened to Jenny...I remember Karen and Marco switch Jenny's baby with Katrina Carr's baby because Jenny's baby died * or was it that it was REALLY Katrina's baby that died?*...I remember Karen ran off with Steve *Judith's real life hubby*...that's about all I can remember as by this time I didn't get to see OLTL except when school was not in.
Oh its ok I do understand because i was in school too at that time so i feel ya? I do know that it was Jenny's baby that died and Karen begged Marco to switch hers with Katrina's . When the switch happened in 79 I was 2 and a half years old so I didnt see it but I did see that online on here daytime to remember but when it was revealed I found that all out and I was about 6 or 7. Thats why I cant remember what happened to Jenny cause I was still elementary school when she left I think lol
I was about 5 or 6 when Karen gave her testimony...I remember this time period can't remember what time of the year it was...but I would say it must have been summer for me to remember it unless they had it on at the daycareI was in because I began Kdg. in Fall of 79' and would not have been home to see it.
I wonder if the other clip is still up..the one with Karen confessing ALL to Viki...I think I like THAT scene even better than this one. They truly need to bring back Karen.
jenny left with david renaldi, cassie's biodad. when Zaslow returned to OLTL in a wheelchair, I believe it was said that Jenny had died in a European avalanche.
Thank you so much. I've always wanted to see Judith's superb performance in OLTL. I wasn't born till '79 so I missed her soap opera days. Her performance could really teach aspiring actors how to naturally portray a character and render dialogues in a remarkable and astonishing manner.
no one could ever perform like this on soap operas today the actors and actresses are so sloppy.i challenge any of them today to top judith lights performance.THIS IS SOAPS!!!!!
I wasn't born when judith played karen wolek could someone please tell me did dorian and karen ever have any interaction with eachother did they like eachother or hate eachother or what just curious
Wait a minute folks !! If Marco Dane was supposedly killed, why is he clearly sitting in the court room audience (alive and well I might add) @ 1:51 ??????
if judith light was still on oltl during the late 80's into the 90's imagine the rival chemistry between her character karen and other characters like gabrielle medina, tina lord, lindsay rappaport, blair cramer, alex olanov the possibilities would have been endless
Incredible! I remember rushing home to watch this with my Mom after school. Judith Light was fantastic. Watching this after all this time is still riveting. They sure don't write stuff like this any more on the soaps.
I remember rushing home from school and getting my TV turned on by 2:30EST to catch the last half hour of OLTL. JL is amazing!
WHY CAN'T THE WRITERS WRITE GOOD STUFF LIKE SOAPS USED TO WRITE? They try to be so "real" now and they forget that it all starts with GREAT writing and ACTORS WHO CAN ACT AND NOT JUST LOOK GOOD! WANT A GREAT SOAP? GET GREAT WRITERS AND ACTORS!
i too was a big fan of OLTL and i agree JL was fabulous. i am also blessed by being the son of one of the great driving forces of daytime drama in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's,; the co-founder of OLTL and writer of this scene, Mr. Don Wallace.
I remember these scenes like it was yesterday. Man, OLTL was fabulous back then.. I could't wait to come home and watch! JL was amazing and the s/l were human stories, not the crap they spew as s/l's today! I loved Karens friendships with Ed and Marco Dane. I loved Edwina, Larry, Herb, Carla, etc.. those were the dame days of soaps.. Writers could take a lesson from these clips..
I saw this episode when it first aired, and I cried then. I still get tears in my eyes when I see it again all these years later. Judith Light's performace was excellent! Thanks for posting it.
WOW! I never knew Judith Light was ever on soaps, much less gave performances like THIS! No wonder TV had her doing double duty this year, on Law & Order: SVU and Ugly Betty. I wish her luck with the Emmy!!
POWERFUL!! I can certainly see why Judith won back to back emmys, but also note Erika Slezak's reactions in the background. So realistic and raw! Take note current younger OLTL actors (if I may use the term loosely) this is how you WORK IT!!
the characters oltl could do without are jessica, natalie, marcie, starr, todd manning unless its roger howarth, michael and john mcbain, antonio vega, cristian vega, marty saybrooke, miles laurence get rid of them all they are boring and their story lines are weak oh and get rid of nash too
Wow! Though I disagree with you on Jessica, Natalie, and Marcie and perhaps Michael (though Jessica since her intergration has gotten on my last nerve) but the rest if they left I would cheer!!! John doesn't really bother me but he is boring! I would also like to add Layla, Vincent, Adriana, Rex, and most definitely Blair Cramer!! Goodbye Goodbye!! And yes, bring back Karen, Jenny, Edwina, Mitch, and oh, gosh Gabby Medina and of course Tina Lord Roberts!!
I wish oltl would bring back the following characters, asa, karen, jenny, edwina, alex, mitch, victor lord and gabrielle medina they all could rock llanview oh and max holden and alex olanov oltl would be hot.

to rosannasfriend.......YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT KNOW ACTING SUSAN HASKELL AS MARTY SUCKED IN COMPARISON TO THIS SCENE WITH JUDITH LIGHTS ..KAREN.THERE IS ABSOLUTLEY NO QUESTION OR COMPARISON.
charlotteguy7 I don't look at oltl anymore either the show has gone to the dogs literally like most of daytime now days these untalented teenagers are taking over and I have never liked the buchanan family the story lines involving them are weak and not written very well
I remember that episode. That was back when head writers were allowed the space and time to craft compelling stories. So many great characters back then - although Larry Wolek left me flat.
Not only was this the greatest performance in the history of Daytime Soaps....it can easily go up against anything in Primetime TV!! Judith Light is PHENOMINAL!!
I remember this primo performance...I used to come home from high school and watch OLTL. OMG, my heart bled for Karen and Judith Light was awesome! I quit watching OLTL when Karen left Llanview. Enjoyed Judith in "Who's the Boss" and not so much in the skin care infomercial...I noticed somewhere here said she's on "Ugly Betty" now.
She's also been on Law and Order SVU as the DA...she's STILL FANTASTIC...BTW...I can't remember the circumstances involving Karen leaving Llanview...I know she left with the guy that Judith Married in real life...or was it the one who played Jenny that was married to him in real life...anyway can y'all explain that s/l...thanks
Oh an dRE: soap actresses today...I'd agree with you except I think Nancy Lee Grah is a close second...even with crappy material she turns it into sunshine.
really? That's awesome!..It explains while NLG can be so damn good..cause she learned from the best..judith light =) I woulda given money to see a scene with Judith Light and the amazing Sarah Joy Brown =)
Almost 30 years later, Judith Light is about to go on the witness stand again, this time as Claire Meade on "Ugly Betty". Let's hope that she's just as compelling now as she was here!
Thanks so much for posting this. If I'm not mistaken, Karen's final freak-out at the end of this clip made TV Guide's 'Top 100 TV Moments of all Time' list. I saw Judith talking about it on a talk show, and when they showed the clip Judith was very obviously moved.
WOW!!!This is just as Powerful as when it first aired on March 06, 1979. I wish ABC would release a DVD regarding this storyline..from the hit and run accident of little Brian Kendall to Marco/Mario's murder and Viki's trial.Judith consistently displayed stellar acting as Karen Wolek
You know Anthony Call (Herb) was a wonderful antagonist in this scene. It does take two and though Judith Light is the highlight of the scene, she had help.

CORRECTION: THAT WAS MARCO DANE!!!! It was found out later that the guy who was killed was his twin.
koollatter 4 years ago
Marco's twin brother was Dr. Mario Corelli.
koollatter 4 years ago
That was Marco's twin brother.
koollatter 4 years ago
Wait a minute folks !! If Marco Dane was supposedly killed, why is he clearly sitting in the court room audience (alive and well I might add) @ 1:51 ??????
ALLEN0955 4 years ago
well the shit is about to hit the fan in Llanview this year shocking secrets will be revealed

If the writers strike continue through next year I hope they show classic episodes

Can't believe I found this treasure. I watch Ugly Betty, and could never shake the parallels between Karen Wolek and Claire Meade.
I think Judith Light will always be my all time favorite actor.
tonybklyn 4 years ago 2
You know...you're right...Claire does have qualities of Karen.
MsTexas73 4 years ago
Jack Nicholson must have watched this before A Few Good Men

if judith light was still on oltl during the late 80's into the 90's imagine the rival chemistry between her character karen and other characters like gabrielle medina, tina lord, lindsay rappaport, blair cramer, alex olanov the possibilities would have been endless
denvercarrington07 4 years ago 3
Incredible! I remember rushing home to watch this with my Mom after school. Judith Light was fantastic. Watching this after all this time is still riveting. They sure don't write stuff like this any more on the soaps.
szqsk8 4 years ago 2
Wow. What a perfomance.
SoapFreak 4 years ago
I remember rushing home from school and getting my TV turned on by 2:30EST to catch the last half hour of OLTL. JL is amazing!
WHY CAN'T THE WRITERS WRITE GOOD STUFF LIKE SOAPS USED TO WRITE? They try to be so "real" now and they forget that it all starts with GREAT writing and ACTORS WHO CAN ACT AND NOT JUST LOOK GOOD! WANT A GREAT SOAP? GET GREAT WRITERS AND ACTORS!
cigar212 4 years ago 5
Right On!
MsTexas73 4 years ago
i too was a big fan of OLTL and i agree JL was fabulous. i am also blessed by being the son of one of the great driving forces of daytime drama in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's,; the co-founder of OLTL and writer of this scene, Mr. Don Wallace.

Judith Light is fantastic, thanks so much for posting this.
jenron12 4 years ago

Judith was JUST TREMENDOUS!I remember this one SO WELL, the tears never stopped..OMG!

Is that Michael Mckean from Laverne & Shirley?
bloodpoole 4 years ago
WOW! I never knew Judith Light was ever on soaps, much less gave performances like THIS! No wonder TV had her doing double duty this year, on Law & Order: SVU and Ugly Betty. I wish her luck with the Emmy!!
valsadie 4 years ago
POWERFUL!! I can certainly see why Judith won back to back emmys, but also note Erika Slezak's reactions in the background. So realistic and raw! Take note current younger OLTL actors (if I may use the term loosely) this is how you WORK IT!!

Nancy Lee Grahn...Alexis on General Hospital
MsTexas73 4 years ago
the characters oltl could do without are jessica, natalie, marcie, starr, todd manning unless its roger howarth, michael and john mcbain, antonio vega, cristian vega, marty saybrooke, miles laurence get rid of them all they are boring and their story lines are weak oh and get rid of nash too
trumeaning07 4 years ago
Wow! That is the kind of drama soaps really need nowadays. Real, human, stuff, with GREAT actors.
Judith Light gets a lifetime pass in my book.
fossefan 4 years ago
And yes, bring back Karen, Jenny, Edwina, Mitch, and oh, gosh Gabby Medina and of course Tina Lord Roberts!!
dereka79 4 years ago
totally agree with everyone you said. They can all go. I could love Todd again if Roger comes back.
KanyeLove 4 years ago
I wish oltl would bring back the following characters, asa, karen, jenny, edwina, alex, mitch, victor lord and gabrielle medina they all could rock llanview oh and max holden and alex olanov oltl would be hot.

to rosannasfriend.......YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT KNOW ACTING SUSAN HASKELL AS MARTY SUCKED IN COMPARISON TO THIS SCENE WITH JUDITH LIGHTS ..KAREN.THERE IS ABSOLUTLEY NO QUESTION OR COMPARISON.

charlotteguy7 I don't look at oltl anymore either the show has gone to the dogs literally like most of daytime now days these untalented teenagers are taking over and I have never liked the buchanan family the story lines involving them are weak and not written very well
kwolek1979 4 years ago
Judith Light was Awesome and so was One Life to Live. They were like family when I was kid- I missed school to see this!!!
ham4ut 4 years ago
I remember that episode. That was back when head writers were allowed the space and time to craft compelling stories. So many great characters back then - although Larry Wolek left me flat.
charlotteguy7 4 years ago
Not only was this the greatest performance in the history of Daytime Soaps....it can easily go up against anything in Primetime TV!! Judith Light is PHENOMINAL!!

I remember this primo performance...I used to come home from high school and watch OLTL. OMG, my heart bled for Karen and Judith Light was awesome! I quit watching OLTL when Karen left Llanview. Enjoyed Judith in "Who's the Boss" and not so much in the skin care infomercial...I noticed somewhere here said she's on "Ugly Betty" now.
alexisdiva9 4 years ago
She's also been on Law and Order SVU as the DA...she's STILL FANTASTIC...BTW...I can't remember the circumstances involving Karen leaving Llanview...I know she left with the guy that Judith Married in real life...or was it the one who played Jenny that was married to him in real life...anyway can y'all explain that s/l...thanks
MsTexas73 4 years ago
yes judith's character left with the character of the guy she is married to in real life. thats robert desiderio.
dynamic27ph 4 years ago
thanks...he played...ummmm...was it Steve?
Oh an dRE: soap actresses today...I'd agree with you except I think Nancy Lee Grah is a close second...even with crappy material she turns it into sunshine.

As far as I know this is the only soap opera performance that is used in acting classes. Judith Light was absolutely riveting.

She was out of this world, wasn't she? That show really never has been as good since she left. Personally, I always felt the Buchanans drug it down.

I always wanted to see these old clips too...I wasn't born until '81 so I never got to see all of this....Judith rocked!!!

Almost 30 years later, Judith Light is about to go on the witness stand again, this time as Claire Meade on "Ugly Betty". Let's hope that she's just as compelling now as she was here!
DMMeltzer 5 years ago
OMG, I remember this episode! Awesome...bravo Judith Light! I loved her in OLTL!!
vigilance77 5 years ago
Thanks so much for posting this. If I'm not mistaken, Karen's final freak-out at the end of this clip made TV Guide's 'Top 100 TV Moments of all Time' list. I saw Judith talking about it on a talk show, and when they showed the clip Judith was very obviously moved.
johnc1970 5 years ago
WOW!!!This is just as Powerful as when it first aired on March 06, 1979. I wish ABC would release a DVD regarding this storyline..from the hit and run accident of little Brian Kendall to Marco/Mario's murder and Viki's trial.Judith consistently displayed stellar acting as Karen Wolek
cityboy420 5 years ago
