Netgear is way overpriced, everyone knows that. Especially when buying the business editions that come with harddrives. It's rediculous. Many companies are switching to Thecus or QNAP because of this; the high-end NAS models of these brands are lightning fast as well but don't make you broke!
Thanks for your passionate comment. It is very much appreciated. However, I think it's clear that not EVERYBODY believes that Netgear is overpriced, as they continue to hold a huge chunk of the market. If you scroll through our episodes you'll see that we've reviewed three QNAP and four ReadyNAS boxes. We liked the QNAP, but I wouldn't recommend it for SMB use. (Thecus didn't want to play with us.)
Comparatively, RN was just better prepared to prime time.
BTW... we are NOT monetarily sponsored by Netgear. We DO use a lot of Netgear equipment for storage. (Another point... I can actually edit HD footage in real-time over the network... can't do that with our QNAP).
Well. Qnap only has 1 year warrenty. Netgear 5 years. Some retailers sell extra warrenty on the Qnap's then they are just as expensive as the Netgear.
Good job with the review! I am now a fan of a catholic priest. Never thougtht I would say that.
More related to the topic...How does the ReadyNAS Pro talk to an Xbox 360? I see it advertised to do so. Also, can I back up movies, place them in the ReadyNAS and stream them to my Xbox 360 later when I want my own vs of Netfilx On Demand?
this is a pretty spectacular device ... but if the commercial market is any indication soon someone will release some boxes that can be slaved to each other for more span and faster output.
another nice thing is that this box could serve as an internet server I assume, much like the QNAP machines.
im not real happy with support from any of these companies.
Now this is what I call a review... awesome, my compliments! As a matter of fact, I will recommend buying NetGear ReadyNAS Pro's for projects at work. Based on your review. Again, thank you very much!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found the review useful. Be sure to stay tuned, we should be receiving a few new ReadyNAS units before the end of the week.
Wow, nice stats, well researched, good review ... for $1700 I am going to have to wait for this to come down in price. Since these boxes have been debugged with the smaller versions, the cost of these boxes should be close to the opening cost of the smaller boxes when they first came out. This is fairly close .... but 500GB drives is not that great. Also the flexibility/interface to change the configuration of these boxes is not so hot, at least based on my readynas 4-bay.
For home use I have a D-link DNS-323 with Twonky and 2 WD Green 1TB drives installed, I can stream video without a PC to both my Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, I can also Store all my Files on it to share with my Desk top and 2 Macbooks, I also have the D-link 4500 and can transfer files to my desk top through gigabit faster then USB and it only uses 12W at idle and 24W in use compared to running a desk at 200w or more for Network streaming and storage
1. As I get more and more data (especially video data) I need to access it across more and more machines. I want a central repository for all my files.
2. As I get more and more data, I realize how much of it is irreplaceable. Tape is too slow and lots of hard driver are too impractical. NAS = Accessible, redundant and FAST!
Im still using a older Netgear Storage central, using dual 500gig hard drives. This makes me think it might be time for a upgrade. Looks wonderful. Mine is showing its age and thinks crashing is its job. Great video.
I bought it a while back to use for streaming off of, but now I have a large file server. So it just sits in the corner where it belongs, rarely ever used. Most of the time it was just slow as can be and others it just shows up as blank drives.
You're both right on... one of the best things Netgear ever did was to purchase Infrant. Not only did they get a great product line, but they got all the bright people behind it!
We reviewed the QNAP TS-209 and TS-409 in episodes 66 and 92. While I like the QNAP line and I applaud it for its affordability and capabilities... neither come even close to the performance and expandability of the ReadyNAS Pro. In fact, the maximum transfer speed of the Pro is almost four times that of the TS-409 Pro.
Additionally, the dual LAN ports of the RN Pro make it much more useful as a server, should you decide to run services. Peace, Fr. Robert

what exactly IS the netgear readynas pro? Is it like.. a computer? Harddrive? you didn't say what it was lol

PozzBox,
From the review: "The Netgear ReadyNAS Pro is their latest entry into the Network Attached Storage world."
NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE
Therefore, you might guess that is has something to do with storage that is attached to your network.

why do you like nas's so much?!
blackhole8746 3 years ago
blackhole8746,
Good Question: there are two reasons really...
1. As I get more and more data (especially video data) I need to access it across more and more machines. I want a central repository for all my files.
2. As I get more and more data, I realize how much of it is irreplaceable. Tape is too slow and lots of hard driver are too impractical. NAS = Accessible, redundant and FAST!

if you have the 101 I would dump that as soon as i could if I were you.
anything is better than the sc101.
dlink has a the dns-* box, and there are several netgear options, and the qnap ts-* series is nice too.
themountainviewguy 3 years ago
yeah its a 101, worst piece of junk ever.
I bought it a while back to use for streaming off of, but now I have a large file server. So it just sits in the corner where it belongs, rarely ever used. Most of the time it was just slow as can be and others it just shows up as blank drives.

Yeah, but have you seen the QNAP line. I like it a lot.
The internals of the QNAP are much more accessible, the box is much less expensive and much more capable. Also, you can set up servers on it as well.
