  • Zelda. I'd save her.

  • @Zabai I agree, I could understand 73,017 likes and 0 dislikes. But the 4 who disliked this obviously need to get their eyes tested or a better mouse :-)

  • I cant believe anyone would dislike this..

  • This is the most beautiful song I have heard in a verrrrry long time. I may not understand a word of it (being a Southern American). But this just proves good music speaks to your soul. Love it~ I wish she came somewhere near home

    Florida.

  • a very strong voice wiht a great feeling that make my heart are crying

    i Love it

  • I think this might be my favorite song in my 60 years of life.

  • Nam bheachd-sa seo fear de na h-òrain a's binne 'san dualchas Gàidhealach gu léir... agus tha mi fìor-thoilichte a chluinntinn air YouTube

  • ts awesome

  • @Inoitspointless I appreciate your point. I appreciate the origins of Julie's language/culture and music. I love the influence of Norwegian/Swedish fiddle playing on Shetland culture and in turn the influence of Scottish/irish/sea shanties/Cape Breton music on New world music (La Bottine Souriante etc) I love the way that pure musical streams can run together and create something different but beautiful.

  • @Inoitspointless Fair point although i think great musicians influence each other equally.

  • magic.

  • With this voice and in this language she could sing out the telephone directory of Edinburgh and it would still sound like a love song full of ancient wisdom.

  • ' S math sin!

  • The cuckoo will sing

its song to us from the trees,

the brown stag and its roaring

will wake us in the morning.

  • Is tù gaol mo chridhe!

  • When you hear music as beautiful as this it comes as a shock when people 'dislike' it.

There is something about Julie's music which goes so deep.

To me her singing, her performance and her spirit make this music extraordinary.

I think the Transatlantic sessions create special magic. I love Julie with her own band but with the American/Canadian influence this is really really special.

  • @Zabai Never mind: some will click dislike just for the fun of it. Or at least for what they think it's fun.

  • I understand matter of opinion and all that, but how someone can bring them self to click dislike is beyond me. Julie's voice is excellent, to say the least, brightening, as close to perfect as a mortal can get, is as close as I can get. The house band is particularly good here. (well, they're good every where, but...)

  • @sinjin480 Maybe because she's not the only one :). (I'm not speaking about myself, obviously.) But you are very kind to defend her - it is really rare.

  • Tar ar ais arís go hÉireann agus déan turas thart ar an tír ar fad leis an cheol galanta seo---spreagfaidh thú na mílte mílte

  • Amazing stuff. I apologize if I'm not the first to ask but is there a translation out there. I would love to put the words to this incredible song.

  • @matts213 On her official site, go to the songs link and the latest two albums have lyrics, including this song. For the earliest one, go to celticlyricscorner. :)

  • @matts213 I found one on google, I think I typed "Julie Fowlis Bothan translation" It's all about a man with golden hair and kisses like honey who buys her gifts from London. :)

  • @matts213 I don't want to be mean, but would you want to translate it ? This song is just about perfection, and I like ambient glitched up electronic music. Theres nothing as powerful as this.

  • Julie Fowlis sings from her heart and it goes straight to my heart with divine clarity. I feel my Scottish ancestors speaking. Thank you for the posting.

  • all i can say is simple brilliant - really fantastic song music and a voice of an angel!

  • Julie Fowlis Linda voz ! Linda Linda!!! Bothan Àirigh am Bràigh Raithneach Uma das Canções scocesa gaélica

    Linda!!!

    gostaria de saber a tradução?

  • gives me the shivers every time i hear this song, dont think anybody could sing this as good as julie !!

  • Julie also recorded this song on her latest album, Uam, and there are other youtube posts, but this one is the best. All the others in the room are among the absolute best in traditional music and even they seem amazed at her singing. I can't imagine any way that this could have been better ... it is perfect.

  • I don't understand a word, but this song is beautiful and Julie is wonderful and I'm in tears. Thanks from this sassanach from south of the border.

  • man, i love this song. transatlantic sessions is where it's at. also, julie fowlis is beautiful. erin go bragh.

  • @surfer1124

She's Scottish, not Irish. But good sentiment, and both countries have incredible folk music. :)

  • How I wish I was born in the highlands of Scotland... playing one of those instruments and listening to a girl singing this song. *sad*

  • Wonderful. Really fine all around...

  • @angryliberal

    I agree...

  • I agree with Riccardo, this music means something. i saw Julie Fowlis sing at Sidmouth Folk Festival and was amazed - how can anone make music sounds quite so beautiful?

  • Ich bin ja über den schottischen whisky auf diese wundervolle sprache gekommen. Richtig schade das nur noch 1% der Iren und Schotten Gälisch verstehen und sprechen können. Wundervoll wie der whisky^^

  • Does anyone know the titles translation to English?

    Thanks

  • @mckohtz "A Sheiling on the Braes of Rannoch"

  • She's just priceless. Clear as a fall of sweet water.

  • @manthasagittarius Very well said.

  • An aural treat! Thank you for sharing!

  • She will be at HebCeltFest at Lewis this July. I will be there! ;)

  • I was wondering if she ever comes to Canada in particular the west it would be great to see her band live.

  • @bulldoddle

Julie was here in Vancouver in Feb 2009. It was a fantastic concert. Hopefully she'll come back soon!

  • I can't even explain how this song makes me feel at peace I'm looking forward to gettin her new CD.

  • they say when you hear a great singer you do not have to under stand it to get what it is about this is one great singer

  • so warming to listen to this heartfelt music great voice julie best of musicians

  • riccardorodriguez81 - thank you could not agree more!

  • Have no doubt Julie is as sweet and nice as she appears on video. Met her after her show in Dallas last year, what a wonderful, talented artist, something very special about this one, a remarkable young woman.

  • so sweet to listen to. she's so nice ot watch while you listen

  • beautiful voice.fine musicians too!

    transatlantic sessions was the best

idea you guys ever had!it was wonderful

thank you so much alli &jerry

  • All I can say is,right on!

  • Wow, that just about made me cry and I don't understand a word of it either!

  • For this speaks to my soul and my heart wishes for a better day when I was younger and cared not for the troubles this world can bring, if you can make me cry you have my thanks.

  • from listening to Julie Fowlis and those whom she performs with, I am filled with the joys of music and of its expressive spirit. Thank you so much for sharing these.

  • It gets better and better the more you listen to it.

  • alot of love in it so pretty i love julie i am in america here but my grandpa is so happy i introduced her to him as he moved over from glasgow scotland at age 25 and misses his land over there alot

  • I keep coming back to this, Just heart breakingly beautiful.....And I dont understand a word of it either!

  • A little love song... yet I can feel a whole lot of love.--- Thank you Julie. --- & Thank you mnemonyxx.

  • this tune gives me chills there is real emotion behind it and makes you break out with goosebumps....it is not like that crap teenagers listen to these days..i prefer real music like billie holiday and frank sinatra and of course Julie Fowlis....not britney spears and kesha *shudders*......and yes i a a teenager

  • I agree with you but I like Kesha, but I hate manufactured bands like Girls Aloud who have no soul or originality. Here is real soul and passion right here :)

  • Gahh i cant stand Kesha..but to each his own....i have never heard of Girls Aloud..but i would imagine them to be somewhat like girlicious i would imagine*shudders*

  • They are a terrible British band from Reality TV origin.

All produced by Simon Cowell as you can imagine :(

But this is produced by Julie and comes from the soul and from the land <3

  • @MissAlbaNuadh I'm a teenager too, and I've learned to separate things like Billie Holiday and Kesha. There's real music like this gorgeous love song, and then there's the insipid little pop songs with little artistic or emotional value that you still like to hum along with when they play on the radio. I can appreciate both in their own settings.

More importantly; damn, Julie Fowlis can sing.

  • sorry i meant no digs on teenagers in general..but i do find as you put them "insipid pop songs" take away from the truly great and heartfelt..i doubt kesha is really passionate about going out and getting hammered....compared to that of billie holiday's strange fruit....that is just my opinion...maybe i was born in the wrong generation

  • Sublime...

  • Chòrd sin rium gu mór. Really great.

  • Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

  • oh my god this is gorgeous *cries* x

  • Music is a universal language. I can't understand the lyrics of this song but it still touches my heart, and I know a lot of people who can agree - my boyfriend is in love with an Italian song :)

  • Eat your heart out, Brittney Spears et al. This is real music and it means something.

  • @riccardorodriguez81 Hohohohohohohohohohoho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's tellin' 'em bud.

  • Please rate if you're willing. Exceptional music needs more visibility on youtube.

  • This song makes me cry, every single time I hear it. Just her voice at the beginning: so beautiful, and so full of longing.

  • Lovely song, The most touching voice I have ever heard . I wish i could understand the lyrics !! My first contact with gaelic songs was on a bus ride to highlands, The bus driver put them on I couldn't help asking about them later . I am glad to find them here Thank you for posting .

  • Breathtaking.

  • bring tears to a glass eye it would fantastic

  • Not only does she sing like an angel, she looks like one too. I'm convinced that she is genetically hardwired such that she cannot make a bad song, even if she tried.

  • Stunning singing, I was in tears upon hearing this about an hour ago....

  • Me apaixonei pela voz dessa contora

Julie Fowlis vc tem uma voz celestial

  • Julie is always wonderful and this song, in particular, is very beautiful.

I am so proud to be Scottish and a Gaelic speaker.

Scotland MUST do more to revive this dying language.

  • heh... well, if it helps, I am learning the language, though I am from the US. I am of Irish decent, and I decided to learn Irish Gaelic... I've only been at it for a few weeks, but it is by far the most fun language I have attempted (I speak Spanish, Latin, and smatterings of Japanese as well)... So ar, I have been working exclusively with rosetta stone. Do you have any recommendations of other resources that would help? I am in California, & there are no Gaelic speakers for me to practice with

  • You need to go to some highland games, most likely you'll find a few people (if not a lot) that can speak Gaelic.

  • @talanhawke If you are in the Los Angeles area, the Celtic Arts Center has classes in Irish and in Scots Gaelic. They are located in N. Hollywood.

  • Se glè mhath e a' Ghàidhlig

  • you know rosetta stone do irish AND welsh, but not scots gaelic? how crap is that?

  • wat?

  • Dear Gods... i´m in bliss!

    beautiful song!!

  • Enough to bring tears to the eye's. Well done!

  • Translation Part 1 It was my love and my darling Who was yesterday in Glen Garry, He of the hair like gold And kisses sweet as honey: He of the hair like gold And kisses sweet as honey: You carry your clothes best Of any who have stood on the earth. You carry your gear best Of all the men I have ever seen. You suit your hose best
  • Trasnlation part 2

And the well-fitting shoe with the laces,

A dark blue coat from London

    That costs crowns to buy;

Well do trews fresh from the iron look

    On the thigh of the gallant;

Well does a bonnet with a cockade look

On the tall man with the curly hair.

When you would arrive at the fair,

This is the gear you would bring home to me:

  • PART 1 Gur h-e m anam is m eudail A bha n-dè n Gleanna Garadh, Fear na gruaige mar òr Is nam pòg air bhlas meala. O hì ò o hù ò O hì ò o hù ò Hìriri oho èileadh O hìri riri o gheallaibh o. Fear na gruaige mar òr Is nam pòg air bhlas meala. S tu as fheàrr dhan tig deise Dha na sheas air an talamh;
  • @ElflandsWorkshop As another sasunnach from the states, thanks so much for posting this. Although I don't know Gàidhlig, it's great to try to follow along with the lyrics. I think one could go a little way in learning the language just by doing this with slow ballads. Especially with Julie ... her pronunciation is so incredibly clear.

  • @jwilliam2255 you´re very welcome :D i would love to learn myself but it takes a long time and someone to teach me. And yes, her pronunciation is great!

  • PART 2 S tu as fheàrr dhan tig culaidh Dha na chunna mi dhfhearaibh. S tu as fheàrr dhan tig osan S bròg shocrach nam barrall; Còta Lunnainneach dùbhghorm, S bidh na crùintean ga cheannach; S math thig triubhais on iarann Air sliasaid a ghallain; S math thig bonaid le fàbhar Air fear àrd a chùil chlannaich. An uair a ruigeadh tu n fhèill, S e mo ghèar-sa thig dhachaigh:
  • please god, let me find a girl with those looks and lungs before its too late, in return i'd promise to stop making hollow promises :)

  • This is amazing. Anyone know if this song is on an album somewhere? I need to buy this.

  • New album came out last month with this on it. its the most beautiful song Ive ever heard and Im into screwed up electronica.

:) Breathtaking. There is some good in the world.

  • The always GREAT Julie

  • PERFECT !

  • If this isn't one of the most beautiful, beautiful things I've ever heard ...

This young woman, her voice and skills with the music and the ancient language of the Gaels is a treasure to all of us.

The world is a better place because of her.

  • absalootly botifull song reely touches ya even though i don understant the words i thanks ya for sharin this my frient ---kilby---

  • Aye, the drink is a bad man at times! Replacing last night's drunken posts with a straightforward praise of Julie's singing. Great re ndition Julie!

  • This song is so beautiful it tears my heart out. Why and how does such enchanting music come from this part of the world?

  • You just have to be in Scotland and Ireland and you will see how enchanting it is and how you can almost sense the layers of time around you. Gaelic is an ancient language that seems to haunt and calm you even if you don't understand it. Scotland is the land of Druids and Picts and Vikings....it is magical.

  • I have! and you are right. If there's such a thing as past lives, I definitely resided there once.

  • Tears my heart out to.Guess thats Scotland.Fine fine country with great depths of passion and also compassion. Alba gu brath

  • wow!! she is gorgeous and a crystal clear singer, she is a proper girl ..... i love her.... great stuff!! a brand new fan.

  • Julie is lovely and she has a beautiful, haunting voice. I am glad to have become acquainted with her while in Scotland last summer.

  • We share the best surname, so fair play tae ye! But Julie is soooo special !

  • Excellent surname and Julie is special.

  • It's "MacGhilleBridghe" in Gaelic by the way. Means "son of a follower of St. Bridget", if you didn't know?

  • I did know that actually but thank you. It is one of the rare Gaelic surnames that means the son of "a woman's name". I call her Breed or Breet phonetically.

  • I can't quite fathom how beauitiful this music is.

Julie is my "precious", pure and simple!

  • Wonderful to see Sharon and Jerry featured on this song.

  • *tear* This has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, even if I have no clue what she's saying!

  • Hey look, Sharon Shannon is in this video. I wasn't expecting that. What a really nice surprise.

  • she has this earthy, pure and natural beauty about her. if you're into white chicks, she's definitely a keeper. i'd make a pasty, Gaelic baby with her

  • she looks even nicer now, cut her hair short

  • Reminds me of my wee warrior, far, far away. I will see her someday :)

  • I have always admired the culture and wisdom of the Elven people. Thank you sooo much for sharing your talent and beauty with us. We need more of your kind in our world.

  • I like the song too but I'm pretty sure she isn't a elf :P.

  • LOL!

  • "I like the song too but I'm pretty sure she isn't a elf"

If not she, *who* is? ;-)

  • Something of an "in" joke! Elsewhere on Youtube Julie is described as a Pictish/ Pixie princess!

While she's most definitely a Gael, she does have "Pixie" or fairy fine features! The epithet just stuck! And you have to admit, she is very, uncommonly and delicately pretty!

  • lmao.

  • Her ears do look a bit pointy, ceart gu leor.

  • Elven people? this isn't middle earth

  • Comment removed

  • No of cause it's not...but the language is similiar......and if you close your eyes you might see f´the forests of Lothloria

  • Whilst I admit that Julie does have an Elfin beauty about her, the model that Tolkien used for "Elvin" was Cymric, (or Welsh) to us! "Galadriel, Rohan, Lothlorien", were all lifted from the Welsh/Breton language.

The whole linguistic model, British Isles, with Welsh, the ancient tongue of the elves, Latin the lingua franca, and Anglo-Saxon, what the Orcs speak!

  • Again...... Julie Fowlis... I am from Skye and still live there...You really do Gaelic music proud. There is no doubt the songs are amazing but the way you sing them would bring tears to a glass eye! Gur math theid leat a' ghraidh, tha na h-orain agaibh gu math araid! le durachan bho Stafainn xx

  • Maravilloso, que puedo decir. Guapa, y una voz tocada por los dioses. Desde la Tacita de Plata: Cadiz

  • I just cried like a baby for five minutes. Wasn't expecting that! Came here after hearing her amazing version of Blackbird. Wow.

  • If you type your DVD player's Make & Serial No into Google You can get the code to make it Multi Regional

  • This is absolutely beautiful! I love the song, the instrumentation, her voice, everything! Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to this song? I have looked all over the place, but I cannot find the words! Any help would be appreciated! Thank you for posting this! :D

  • You can find the words in a book called "Songs of Gaelic Scotland" by Anne Lorne Gillies, published by Birlinn, price 30 pounds. Lyrics and score for Bothan Airigh am Braigh Raineach is on page 330 of the book!

This song is apparently from Perthshire.

  • Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! :D

  • ابدعتي الصراحه

  • When will we in the US be able to purchase a copy of this DVD that we can play on our DVD players? If you are from the US and you're interested in petititioning the producers of this fine DVD for release here in the u.s. then e-mail me and I'll tally all comers.Really.Let's see if we can get this on a region 1 DVD.

  • I agree, but if you buy a copy of the PAL region ? dvd you can easily rip it to play on NTSC and region 1 players

  • ravishingly sublime.

  • This piece touches the sweet-sad depths of this world. My Island off the coast of Maine feels very connected to your Scottish Island. Very well done, thank you! John Follis possibly use to be spelled "Fowlis".

  • that send chills up my back.

  • yes I agree it's an odd expression, but I wouldn't attach any specific meaning to it. Certainly does not distract from what is great interpretation.

  • @amandaberesford I agree. Jerry Douglas (the lap steel guitar player) has performed in the Transatlantic Sessions ever since the first one and was co-musical director (with Aly Bain) on this one. I think he was just glancing over to make eye contact since his introduction was over.

  • Brill song and in the little intro she looks so radient

  • This is wonderful. They treat the song with so much respect, such sadness and beauty. Touches the half-Irish heart of me.

  • umm.. this is scottish... sorry.

  • yes but the Gaelic of ireland and scotland are of the same origin and that link between the cultures is still palpable in those that speak the languages

  • It shows those that can do,those that cant talk about it.What im trying to say is dont the spice girls and the like talk a lot.

  • Does anyone no* if she sings any more of these songs without her folk like voice. Cuz this song is very good n' it sounds like international material. Im surprise that there is very little views from her. Cuz i just found her today.

  • mne

thanks for this. never heard it before but it is truly beautiful. i love JF and everything she sings. mum was born in glasgow (as was i) and she used to sing songs in Gaelic to me when i was a child. so this brings back so many good memories.

  • angelic!!!

  • THANKYOU VERY MUCH !! Brilliant

  • Mate, this is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much.

  • Simply wonderful.

  • Julie could sing the Tibetan phone book and it would sound good
