I think money is the sole reason for the state of the community. Back in cod 4 days it was about entertainment value but today its about maximizing likes, favorites, and views through giveaways and drama.
For the record..hutch did WAY WAY WAY more than just "speak his mind". People were right in taking a stand for or against him...and strongly I might add.Because his statements were very strong themselves.

Just make good god damn videos that are entertaining and have great quality. What some directors do (xJawz) honestly disgusts me, and its a shame that money and greed has overcome a community built around having fun, relaxing playing some games .
I think the major problem is with partnerships, it's good that people get paid to make videos, but some are treating it as a business, which harms the output of their channel and in a domino effect the standards drop. It also treats the viewer as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself. As the viewers enjoyment seems to secondary to the money that is being made.
You know, this is like the third commentary from different commentators that I've seen addressing "youtube drama". It confuses me, don't people have better things to do with their lives, like play games? Maybe it's just me.

I agree with you on a lot of what you say, but Hutch was, as an employee of Machinima, required to "not comment" on issues relating to employee conduct and the like. He is allowed to have an opinion, but he has an obligation to his employers that trumps his personal feelings. I recognize he's an outspoken person, but the professional world involves discretion when it comes to your job. This is just my understanding, though.

Focus on the positive side of the community more. It's what the Starcraft community has done and it seems to have a lot less trolls. When commentators get into flame wars then it draws all the subscribers attention to that issue, perpetuating more negativity.
As soon as a community is over say, 100 strong, there is a huge sense of anonymity as its not really possible for everybody to know everyone else on first name terms. The sense of this anonymity means it is EXTREMELY easy for people to hate without feeling anything at all, and not having any repercussions. I think that ignoring these douchebags would deter the majority of them as they like seeing a replies to their comments etc. and people getting REALLY stressed over what they have said.
I really felt a decline in the youtube community last night, I was on a video of the Japan Tsunami and was amazed at all the ignorant and pathetic people making jokes or being general arseholes towards the poor Japanese people who suffered such a tragedy :(

About the whole giveaway thing, people seemed to be hung up on the fact that youtube should be fair. So what, Whiteboy and xJawz thought of a way to make more money via a creative investment before everyone else. Also, Lets be honest, small channels for the most part are not getting "snubbed" from the top favorited, the big guys are still going to get that spot. I don't see why people get so butthurt about it.

I think that making money of of Youtube should not be abused: check out gamingforsickkids , which is a great example of people helping out other people using their influence in the community.

Yeah, when looking at the whole commentary business, often times the younger people will agree with someone no matter what it is, it's like having a 12 year old listen to Onlyusemeblade 24/7 and just love him, eventually, he'll start thinking of him as a person who's never wrong, and we know that's never the case, since noone can achieve that. So emphasizing that, those people are often the ones we call "Trolls" and the ones that bad mouth other people for disagreeing with blade or anyone else.

I agree, I personally used to rage at anyone who i thought was being a complete douche in the community, but in the past weeks iv realized that it just isnt worth it. If someone is a douche, i just stop associating myself with them (if was associated with them in the first place) and then just ignore the problem. what is slightly more disappointing than the actual douchebaggery of the giveway shenaguns, is how some of the other youtubers responded. Not just speaking out against it but trolling the people in question in a very aggressive and offensive way.
I've gotta say I agree across the board. PAX kind of solidified it for me, I really value the friendships and connections I've made through youtube and video games in general. For me personally, the drama isn't a problem because I choose not to associate with the people involved. Yea, we all discuss the effects things have on the community, but for the most part I get to sit back with my buddies and watch the train crash happen.

If we have a really crappy day, if things just arent going good, we come onto youtube looking for some entertaining videos and want to just have some fun and forget about the negativity in life. I think some people really lose sight of that. Its great to see you and John trying to settle things in the community and help us get back on track. Youtube can be an incredible place and we need to remember that and not let it get to this point again.

Yeah, when looking at the whole commentary business, often times the younger people will agree with someone no matter what it is, it's like having a 12 year old listen to Onlyusemeblade 24/7 and just love him, eventually, he'll start thinking of him as a person who's never wrong, and we know that's never the case, since noone can achieve that. So emphasizing that, those people are often the ones we call "Trolls" and the ones that bad mouth other people for disagreeing with blade or anyone else.

I agree, I personally used to rage at anyone who i thought was being a complete douche in the community, but in the past weeks iv realized that it just isnt worth it. If someone is a douche, i just stop associating myself with them (if was associated with them in the first place) and then just ignore the problem. This community is wayyy too hostile to begin with, from now on il try to not fuel that fire anymore than it already has been :P

I've gotta say I agree across the board. PAX kind of solidified it for me, I really value the friendships and connections I've made through youtube and video games in general. For me personally, the drama isn't a problem because I choose not to associate with the people involved. Yea, we all discuss the effects things have on the community, but for the most part I get to sit back with my buddies and watch the train crash happen.

Unfortunately, it seems that the people who have any influence are more concerned with whos in their group of friends, and their own person self image, then actually making anything better. I think that at this point in the community, several people have stated whats wrong with it, now its time to talk solutions and actually act like an actual community and not just a bunch of people being out there for themselves.
