From Airforcetimes website: crash investigation of Osprey in Qalat Afghan. April 2010 revealed engine failure. Military wanted chief investigator to change his report to "pilot error". "The stresses of flying in the dirt and dust of Afghanistan probably caused the engine problems" BGen. Harvel, chief investigator said. He was not allowed to brief the families of the 4 KIA onboard. Maybe Airforce wants to coverup the reliability problems of this overpriced $67M helo?
my comment has nothing to do with fuel efficency and everything to do with the fact that reguardless of speed when I flew on CH-4s we had to stop for fuel every few hours and in combat that reduces your combat efficency I could care less what the fuel efficiency is. The V-22 full gives us much longer flying time and the V-22 is twice as fast as a CH-46.
@v22crewchief "it can fly farther becuase it carries 9,000 more lbs of fuel that a CH-46E" - so why didn't you just say it can fly faster and longer? when you say it flies farther using up more fuel then it becomes a fuel efficiency issue since fuel efficiency is distance over fuel consumption. Obviously airplanes are more fuel efficient than fixed rotor helos so the V-22 is somewhere in between.
AS far as the engine failure are you serious?? thats what you want use to hate on this plane?????
EVERY JET ENGINE IS EATEN BY THE SAND
2003 Iraq the good old CH-53Es (same bird the osprey replaces in the AF) Could not keep up with the demand for good motors the sand was erroding the compressor blades. If anything happend to that V22 in AF The engine failed at high altitude and fuck man shit happens in combat. Most familys are never "briefed" on how their loved ones died!!
@v22crewchief go argue with the BGen. who was the chief crash investigator - why u barking at the messenger? I'm just informing you of what the airforforcetimes website reported. You reflect the attitude of some Top brass who want to protect the V-22 more than soldiers lives. Most families never briefed?! Wow that's news to me. So that shit about informing the families is propaganda too?!
@v22crewchief so are you saying a CH-46 is more fuel efficient? I would guess a tilt-rotor would have more forward flight fuel efficiency than a static-rotor helo.
