I have read that they know who is watching them, so there is a kind of conection. Following that logic, try to think in something as you are filming, ask them in silent a question or anything, ask them for an answer with a flash or lights.

THATS FUNNY, I do sometimes tell it to give me a sign, to flash a light when it has a steady light on and it does.. Sometimes you see a constant flicker of strobes, then it turns off..
