Brian was in the studio when they worked on Jigsaw Puzzle. He contributed what sounds like a mellotron or autoharp. Bit parts that he believed nobody heard or paid attention to.
My favorite song from Beggars Banquet. And I think Brian Jones was on slide guitar and Keith on acoustic, or vice versa. I know many may disagree but I like the Stones' 60s work better than their 70s. In my opinion the Stones were at their best when Brian Jones was in the band, and this was his last album. Sad he died so early.
@MyGoodOldDesk well he was kicked out of the stones before he died so it wouldnt have made much difference.. brian is on slide im quiet sure, keith dosnt play slide..
@alijav091 That's true but i'm sure if he'd have lived longer they would have eventually invited him back for one of their reunion tours. And I think you're right about Brian on slide..I saw an earlier comment that someone thought Mick was on acoustic, but I thought he just sang, so Keith must have been on accoustic
@MyGoodOldDesk Yeah i am reading keith's book too, brian used to be on slide and then mick taylor.. but from the book I also doubt that they would have made new music with him. on the other hand brian might have made a new band who knows..
@alijav091 Acutally Keith does play slide, but he plays more a blues slide, switching between picking and sliding. This is most likely Ry Cooder who was playing with them covering for Brian, but asked not to be credited after a dispute with Keith over song writing credits. In the credits Brian plays slide on No Expectations, all other guitars being Keith. You're right that this doesn't sound like him on slide.
No matter what era I always go back to the Stones who transcend and remain timeless and pure even if they do tap into other styles(disco, new wave, reggae etc.) theirs still stands 10ft above the others. This sounds more fresh and inspired then anything of today. We will still be listening to this years from now and it will continue to to be a discovered gem by generations of today and tommorow. The groups of today, probably not so much.
I think this songwas very underestmated. Its totally out of their realm . It should have gotten more play time just like Dead flowers and White Horses. Do people actually listen to these. They are missing out on a lot. Just Like Exile on Main street never got proper recognition and some of their greatest songs came off that album. What can I say?
Why are the Stones a great band? Certainly talent but lack of fear to just write good music where ever it took them. Hit makers never interested in riding the hit maker machine just for the sake of it. Classic.
So nice to see comments that are all positive. No bitching about this band "ripping off" this or that or puerile remarks from people that are just dying to find someone who is wrong about some trivial thing no one cares about and feel compelled to correct them. Nope. Just people with taste listening to music that is timeless and enjoying. Of course if anyone does have anything negative to say I WILL HUNT THEM DOWN AND MAKE THEM LISTEN TO "STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH UNTIL THEIR EARS BLEED! jk,afayk
The Beatles wrote many average songs but they grown up to make proper music before they split up for good. But The Rolling Stones always wrote mature songs and till now. I love both of the bands and both had different style of their music.
yeh, does sound fresh ... many argue that the beatles were "greater" than the stones, but the stones music does still sound fresh, unlike the beatles, which sound VERY dated ...
@imakeawishforapotato The Stones always kept their music more bluesy than the Beatles. I have respect for the Beatles, but the Stones will alway be The Greatest Rock and Roll Band ever.
I heard a rumor that the re-release of this LP on CD was quite a task as the producer had recorded the tracks at a strange rate. In fact, this sounds a tiny bit slower than the 'modern version' I own... still, this is such a damn underrated song! Thank you for posting!
@MultiRandom32 - Thank you for posting this classic song! I once "favorited" eight (8) different versions of this song, and, ALL were eventually deleted by YouTube in all of their great wisdom!?!? This song is so good, that every version was, and is, better than each other in one way or another. What a great tune!! :)
@ls1959 Interesting how the Rolling Stones' music has held up over time. It amazes me how they've continued to gather a new grop of fans with every decade that passes. If only the twenty-somethings who are just hearing this stuff for the first time knew he impact this music had on the rest of us.
@Tubernaut True, but to me it is the bassline. I found a reason and way to blog this last night on a legal blog, Chris King's 1st Amendment Page, peace.
Christopher King, J.D.
PS: I believe this is the first time Mick used the word "shattered" in a song, also.
@KingCast65 You are right about Mick using the word shattered for the first time. Bill Wyman was able to keep near perfect time in this song as he was an amazing bassist.
