@Sensates85 It really depends, there are several good solution like this one that is real nice but not for any use (Cruiser don't play like a real single, for example, but with some saturation is a great pickup). My all time favorite neck single coil is the Fender Texas Special telecaster pickup (rather different from the strat Texas Special), i mount on another strat and is just wonderful for my ears. I like very much telecaster singles. On bridge it really depends, anyway the JB is one

@Sensates85 of most versatile choice you can do, suitable of lot of things, and i like it vert much. On mid position, i trend to not use alone so i like mixing in guitar has a central pickup (sometime i put out, to have 2 pickups has their advantages). I like so very bright pickup, because the mixing with an humbucking NOT splitted is so interesting for me and contrast is needed, even if it is an unusual choice. In stratocasters i trend to like more neck and mid identical, for the 2 position.

@olivacaliente i don't write this mod but it's very easy, you can add a bridge on mod on the free pole in the push pull (is a 2 pole switch, but for splitting use just one switch on the JB)

@JJengineering Thank you. Cruiser is a good pickup, play very well with some amp tones but not so well with others so it really depends (on taste too). Is not so similiar to a single coil, it seems in crunch sounds but as i said it really felt different in others tones. Play nicely on this guitar, it was too bright with stock pups. Beware, is not hot at all, is just a bit more than a standard strat pickup and less than hot single coils (and i'm using the bridge version, with more output).

I need some serious between Vintage,less noisy and a not too hot pickups for my strat,But as you said you're using the Bridge version in the neck? so thats a DP-186 then with ceramic magnet,the way I undertand it, is that the Dp187 with the standard magnets= Bridge and the DP186 with the ceramics =Neck......

you know Dimarzio makes TOO many pickups, I'll have to try them both I guess :)

@JJengineering neck and bridge Cruiser should be almost identical, ceramic magnet with a very light output difference. The neck is tuned for stay at very similar output level than a vintage pickup strat, it seem hotter in value said in Dimarzio site but in real world is not, respect a texas special is much less even the bridge one. For ex the Timmons models (old and newer one) has 2 bridge model on mid and neck to try to compensate the AT1 which is almost a copy to the JB with boosted basses

@giosim75 i never change pots on those guitar so i'm not absolutely sure, anyway i eard it mount a 500k volume and a push push 300k pot (this have some sense as the original setup is very, maybe too bright for singles coils, even respect a stratocaster, and the jb remains very bright similiar to other guitat i tried with a jb on 500k pots)

how much did the picks cost to replace?? I have an old pacifica, the model before yours and I dont know whether to try and get that worked on, or get a new fender. I think it would be a shame to never use it again if i can make it sound good. What would you suggest??? I really like the tone of your guitar really really nice! Its really unique! Rich

@kingbabycakes Thank you. Absolutely if you guitar is in good condition use it. Yamaha do very good instruments, and instruments play even better in yeas as wood become older. If you say me exactly your model (there are lot of pacificas) i try to be of any help. Price of pickup can be really variable, depending on what you search on tone. And you need to change pickup it wont play nice now?

@rafport Well, Its a Yamaha Pacifica 012, its pretty old now. I bought it myself when I was 12, Im now 20, so its an old guitar! At the moment it doesnt play at all, the Jack socket is broken, so I would need to get that serviced too, I love the sound you achieved from your modification. The sound I really want to achieve is a really good clean sound, I like how Telecaster clean sound, really smooth tone. If i could fix the guitar up for around half the price of a new fender, it would be worth..

@kingbabycakes i searched on the web, i'm not sure because it seem the 012 is the starting pacifica (under 112, 212, 412 and 812 i used, not still on sale) but maybe you have a different model because it has 8 yes old. for sure if wood is ok, your guitar can be repaired. components has variable price, but it realli depends, pickup are expensive parts, you can buy a new selector, pots and jacks from 20 to 40 dollars (from decent to high components) so rather cheap. pickups can costs

@kingbabycakes costs more, but it really depends, there price and value are not so connected. for start, maybe your pickup are yet good, maybe not it wont play but that shouldn't mean all parts are broken. so you can repair just changing the broken part, maybe 5 dollars components. maybe you can change just pickup dont like, for ex put the seymour jb on bridge (almost 80 dollars i guess). some nice pickup like wilkinson or tonerider costs much much less, and are pretty good too.

@alenv3 i'm not sure, i think the volume is a 500k and the push pull tone a 300k one; for the cap, i really dont know. i mod the wiring, but except for the dimarzio cruiser on bridge i leave all original electrical parts (i change nut and somethingelse anyway). with the original 2 singles, it was really too bright respect to a strat for the pots values, so now it is better balanced in my opinion

@markdocker i'm not sure to understand, you got a pacifica 112 and you're going to buy a second one? it is a very nice guitar, but if you don't need a backup for intense live session maybe will be better buy a different guitar or plan some radical pickup change in one of the pacifica

@michaeljipi no i just achieve this results with original wiring. i don't write anything about it but i'm capable to say how mod your guitar (i did varius different mod on this guitar, it really depends on taste, you can get any tone so you should choose the one you prefeer)

@patugart i'm using the vox ac30 simulation in the pod xt, all with default settings (the ones appear automatically when you put the amp) except for the volume, set to max. you can change the gain to taste, depending on guitar output. no compressor, no stomps, no equalisation, no modulation, no dilay. just reverb (the first i don't remember the name, i've not the pod just now) with a quite high value mix and others setting default. bye!

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD non so di quali pickup stiate parlando, mi sa che avete rimosso il commento iniziale, comunque ne ho provato parecchi di seymour duncan designed e non sono affatto male. il fischio con saturazioni esagerate ad alti volumi è tipico di molti pickup con placca in metallo (tipo paf), anche di altissimo livello tipo i seymour fatti a mano che costano un occhio, quindi se fossero placcati il problema è quello. verificate anche di non aver inveritto positivo e negativo nelle

nelle saldature, cosa che li fa funzionare perfettamente ma tende a far fischiare di più (a volte molto di piu) i pickup perche si trova la placca inferiore che anzi di andare a massa è sul positivo. i fender dei set custom shop per esempio, per assurdo che possa sembrare, hanno il positivo sul cavo nero e il negativo sul colore, e se mettete roba tipo telecaster sicuro che vi fischia in distorsione. se non placcati e ben saldati e schermati, allora è la paraffina del pickup... amen :)

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD se il problema è nel pickup probabilmente si. fai bene attenzione alla polarita (segui le indicazioni del costruttore) e alla massa, e se il pickup non ha placca sopra tipo PAF non dovrebbe fischiare. se il problema invece è altrove, cambiando pickup non risolvi, ma di elettronica non è che ce ne sia molta, nel caso c'è qualcosa da schermare o che non va a massa.

@rafport me li faccio montare dal liutaio, cmq invece degli shadow ho preso un hambuker air norton di marzio per il ponte e un di marzio air norton minihambuker per il manico, il middle lo lascio così lo userò per i puliti per ora sempre che risolvo il fischio agli altri due.

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD l'air norton full è un ottimo pickup, ha un suono delicato, poca tendenza ad impastare, uscita media non particolarmente aggressivo, quasi sul jazz per alcune sonorità, ottimo come complemento al manico per un pickup di alto output al ponte. messo al ponte immagino suoni bene ugualmente, anche se il posto classico è al manico. il mini air norton, che ho lo stesso provato, invece è molto più spigoloso... direi che è più aggressivo del full e non gli somiglia tanto

@rafport con i pick up nuovi ora al pulito si sente friggere mi sto disperando... l'air norton al ponte suona molto peggio del seymour dancan coreano e penso mi farò rimettere quello. E ora non so se è un problema dell'amplificatore lo devo provare con altre chitarra qua rischio di buttare 2000 euro di strumentazione che non posso permettermi di ricomprare, che rabbia.

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD mi spiace per questi inconvenienti... io ti avevo detto prima che per risolvere un problema è necessario prima stabilire quale sia la causa, e che tu lo avresti risolto solo se era nel pickup. cmq se il pickup è nuovo e tu senti rumori, qualsiasi cosa hai è una cavolata, o son saldature o selettore o potenziometro o jack rovinati/ossidati, nessuno di questi pezzi costa più di una decina di euro circa. ti avevo anche detto che i duncan design che ho provato io erano

@rafport Io ho una pacifica 812 e i seymour che montano sono fatti in giappone e alcuni dicono in corea infatti la scritta seymour duncan è un po' più piccola del normale. In ogni caso ho tolto degli ottimi pick up... ora ho provato l'ampli con un altra chitarra e fischia ugualmente! Sarà un problema di valvole scariche ora dato che è nuovo di zeccha vado li e se non mi risolve il problema mi faccio ridare i soldi.

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD cacciavite (occhio a non toccarle o ti ustioni) sulle valvole ad ampli acceso e udibile. non dovresti sentire nulla o quasi nulla toccando il vetro della valvola (ribadisco... piano!). se invece senti che il colpo produce anche del suono, sono microfoniche e vanno cambiate, così come prendono quello pescano anche tutta una serie di segnali, sia del pickup ma a volte vanno in feedback da sole fra loro

Si dicono valvole microfoniche quando captano cose esterne alle valvole oltre una certa misura, il tuo problema mi sembra differente, c'è un problema di schermatura sembra e anche serio. Domandona, la massa ce l'hai in casa? Non è che stai attaccando l'amplificatore a qualche adattatore o ciabatta malfatto, e sei senza massa?

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD fa molta differenza la massa che manca, e non sono per propria sicurezza (che non è uno scherzo, in caso di guasto e dispersioni rischi molto grosso senza, specie con una chitarra elettrica). La messa a terra fa da schermatura, le parti metalliche della testata che ospitano i circuiti vanno a massa, riduce sensibilmente i rumori di fondo e la sensibilità esterna. Magari è anche microfonica la valvola ma la mancanza della massa puo creare ronzii, fruiscii e interferenze

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD no figurati non mi disturbi, è normalissimo. la seconda bobina degli humbucking è nata appositamente per evitarli, la maggiore potenza e il diverso timbro sono diciamo emersi dopo ma lo scopo era di evitare la cattura di interferenze varie dei pickup singoli. humbucking vuol dire appunto che cancella il rumore (buck the hum). comunque se non usi suoni esageratamente saturi, e non ti metti vicino a fonti di interferenze tipo neon o tubi catodici, è più che sopportabile

@GuybrushThreepwoodMD tutti più che discreti o buoni. il "made in" è una cosa che non andrebbe presa in grande considerazione, il problema è nei materiali perchè a lavorare delle calamite e bobinarci un filo di rame attorno ci riescono ovunque, dipende solo da cosa ci mettono e da quanto (poco) vogliono farli costare. ogni cambio di pickup può essere un miglioramento, una modifica del timbro ma a volte anche un peggioramento... va valutato con attenzione caratteristiche alla mano

@Ilchitarraiomatto direi che nel manico della pacifica siano dei medium a occhio e confrontandoli con le altre chitarre che ho, ma non li ho mai cambiati quindi non ne ho la certezza. magari cercando le specifiche di questa chitarra lo trovi scritto da qualche parte. ciao!
