This video is very confusing ... this is in Nassau Coliseum right? Like back then, the home team wore their white jerseys? Seeing that the Rangers are playing at the Coliseum explains why the Coliseum is jammed packed...but, then the Rangers get scored on and it almost sounds like the Ranger fans are cheering loudly. It almost makes one think the Islanders have fans.
@ECWnWWF the rangers were nobody back then. aside from being perhaps the most boring team in the NHL. the Islanders were reigning champs, one of the most glorious teams ever assembled at that point. the mighty Islanders of this era often had more fans on any given night in ANY arena in the NHL than the home team; their popularity was that big.
sure, things have changed. but you must be too young to remember any of this. check your history before making ridiculous comments about Islander fans.
On of the best shooter of all time. As soon as the puck hit Bossy's stick it was wristed towards the net for a gal. Alot of modern players could learn something from the great Mike Bossy.
Great clip. Reminds me how those Islanders were probably my favorite sports team of all time. Sad to see the state of the team the last 15 years due to the clowns who have owned and managed the team since then.
In spite of less clutching and grabbing, and even arguably players being more talented, the quality of today's NHL is nowhere near the late 70's and 80's.
@sail027li I just watched it last night for the first time in years. The overtime...
Bob Cole, play by play samples Bossy, Bossy...he missed the net!
Can you believe this action in overtime, in a big game? Maloney in front! Billy Smith, robbed him, I tell you, robbed him! The play goes into the corner. Sutter! Kicked out by Glen Hanlon. Shot, SCORES!
so true, you watch all of the highlights from the old days of hockey and such a large number of goals were scored because goalies were strictly stand-up. If you put Gretzky or Bossy in their prime against the goalies today, there is no way they would have reached the numbers they did.
True, but I could equally argue that, back then there was more clutching and grabbing. Plus butter fly goalies had already started to emerge in the late 70s and early 80s. Glenn Hall was probably the first to use in the 60s and then Tony Esposito after. Then other goalies followed.
@bonorye The goalies back then were stand up because the goalies didn't play with police riot shield armor over every part of their bodies. Today all a goalie has to do is butterfly and his queen size bed goalie pads cover the net. The have blockers the size of cabinet doors and chest protectors that make them all look like Herman Munster. Put them in n ormal equipment and Bossy and Gretzky would do just fine.
@leafyutube Of course he would have. For anyone to argue that Bossy, Gretzky, Perrault, Lafleur, Trottier, Dionne or the rest would not have had success in todays so-called game is idiocy. The 1970's and 1980's were the golden age of hockey, every team had a star and many had multiple stars. The game was just better, todays thing is like soccer on ice, unwatchable with names that no one can or wants to pronounce.
You're right, also because Bossy five times went over 60, with a peak of 69 in 78-79, so even if you took about 10 goals off his stats in today's NHL he's still a 50-goal man.
@sub40 yes they're should be an OT. Maloney's goal was good. Islanders have had lucky break after lucky break-but not for the last quarter century!!! 1983!!!
You are right. He scored so many goals on shots that went five-hole, where the goalie went down and the puck went in just for that reason. These shots were low, almost right along the ice. Check out a goal he scores in Game 4 of the 83 finals against Ednonton. It's a breakaway and he simply shoots it. It seemed almost too easy.
@bottomdogman He would have average more than 57.3 (exactly) if he hadn't missed those 17 games in 1986/87. What do you think? That works out to about 48 in 80 games.
Nah, he'd of turned it on, on the last day of the season and scored those last two for 50 in ten straight years!
The thing about Bossy is that he could be invisible for most of the game then someone would get sloppy with the puck and 2 seconds later Bossy would score.
@JimR541 Another example was in 80/81. Having said, I"m getting 50 in 50, he enters game 50 with only 48 goals. Then gets none for the first 55 minutes of the game, and THEN!

If you REALLY have to go there, the only times they really sucked were 1972-1974, 1995-2001 and 2005-Present.

Perfect example of Bossy's philosophy on scoring goals (and btw, he's the greatest pure goal scorer in NHL history .. averaging 57+ a year)..
Bossy said shoot it where the goalie IS.. and look at this video and where he shoots it.. Shoot it where he IS, cuz he's gonna move...
Bossy the KING OF THE 1-TIMER.
#22 forever.
