Ancient Rome was popular when US gained independence, and it was again popular in Italy during the fascists - hence the name. The linkage is not between fasces and fascism. The point is, that ancient Rome has been admired by completely different regimes for very different reasons. - I do'nt understand your point with Maltese cross?
