1:06 When he puts his left hand in front of the right hand(basically near the nut of the guitar) while the right hand is doing hammer-ons and pull-offs, is the left hand finger-tapping too, or people put their left hand there because its just another place to put it while doing hammer-ons and pull-offs?
for the right hand use a full finger and place it behind a fret as if you're playing it, its almost like a capo, so if the guitars in standard if you put your finger across say the 2nd fret you're in F# tuning.... love this technique.
actually grabbing the neck makes the strings stable and you get a cleaner or better sound out of stuff you do soley with your right hand, legattos, hammer ons pull offs ..ect.

Fuck Steve Clark? Steve Clark was the most important member of Def Leppard's early music. The guy wasn't the greatest player ever but he did right some amazing riffs. The reason people mention Steve Clark when Vivian is mentioned is because they would like to see Viv make similar contributions to the band. The reason they "favor" Clark is that they are still waiting on Viv to make any kind of musical contribution to the band.

@colter000 You must not be familiar with Dio's first 3 albums, then. He's on songs like "Holy Diver", "The Last In Line" and "Rainbow In The Dark", just to get you started.
He sold out and makes great cash so he stays quiet like a good boy. LOVED him on Holy Diver, just awesome. He is one guy that went DownHill. Instead of getting better he got worse, or at least never shows he is good.
I saw Leppard last summer and I was so disappointed. Viv didn't take one solo. I think he played a short little something in a slow song but that was it. Phil Collen is one of my all time favorite guitarists, but I just expected more from Viv. Like some past rainbow in the dark stuff....
I've been a VC fan since his first work in DIO and copped all of his solos. I owned this VHS (along with just about every Hot Licks one) but damn....time hasn't been especially kind to this one. Viv plays with "feeling" for sure but a lot of what I just heard is woefully sloppy. Still love the guy's playing from that era but damn...go from this to any vid by MAB and it's like going from Mr Pibb to Dr. Pepper.

A bunch of hammer-ons and pull-offs is not "legato." There is mininformation about that. Legato is a MANNER of playing "smoothly and fluidly" which on guitar (typically) employs strict hammer ons and pull offs. Every hammer-on and pull-off sequence is NOT considered "legato."
i think he's very talented. I know my opinion doesnt count for a lot because im not an advanced guitar player, but i can definitely tell that having guitar skills like that takes many years of practice

He plays well here. His riffs are very linear and show no single key. It's constantly modulating and it would have been cool to see him play less tricky or more straight forward. I can't hear much of those in a song, but it looks cool.
Vivian pesonally has an excelent style. The material in Riverdogs is great and Dio.....cmon, no one could do it better(he made a shitload better job than craig goldie) Vivian is about feeling...the true feeling.
I think your right, Vivian should use some of that irish style into Def Leppard. I bet it it would shine big time rather than them songs that all sound the same.

This isn't tapping dude, what he does in this video is called legato. It's still pretty easy though. & yeah, I agree with you about his technical stuff.
No, the technique he's using in this video is legato, not tapping. Legato is when you use your left hand, & either just use hammer ons & pull offs to get the sound, or use very little picking like he's doing in this video. Tapping involved using both hands, primarily with the right hand higher up on the fret board than the left hand.

Yes they are, but at times it seems he is playing second banana to Phil. He is in something of a Scott Gorham type role as "second lead guitarist" which is a role that allows Scott to shine, but if you look at Vivs lead playing in Dio, when he was sole guitarist it seemed, to me anyway, far more free, and more inspired. Just my opinion, obviously as a big DL fan your opinion may be different. I am a fan of Steve Clark by the way, my all time favourite of that band. I love their earlier stuff.

Viv is a complete ass for not even acknowledging Dio's death. Grow up Viv, it's been almost 30 years!! This video SUCKS BTW. I used to think Viv was a shit hot guitarist, but his playing on this is laughable!!!

Rock is not about cleaness, but feeling and instinct. Nowadays there are plenty of clean rock young guitar players, great tecnique bvut zero emotions. None of them can be compared to Vivian

Viv is the only person (that i am aware of) that talks shit about him so I'll have to go with the majority opinion. That said, Viv played his ass off with Dio and I wish they had stayed together,

A bunch of hammer-ons and pull-offs is not "legato." There is mininformation about that. Legato is a MANNER of playing "smoothly and fluidly" which on guitar (typically) employs strict hammer ons and pull offs. Every hammer-on and pull-off sequence is NOT considered "legato."

He plays well here. His riffs are very linear and show no single key. It's constantly modulating and it would have been cool to see him play less tricky or more straight forward. I can't hear much of those in a song, but it looks cool.

Vivian pesonally has an excelent style. The material in Riverdogs is great and Dio.....cmon, no one could do it better(he made a shitload better job than craig goldie) Vivian is about feeling...the true feeling.
I think your right, Vivian should use some of that irish style into Def Leppard. I bet it it would shine big time rather than them songs that all sound the same.
Vivian rocks big time....he should shine like he was always meant to be!

No, the technique he's using in this video is legato, not tapping. Legato is when you use your left hand, & either just use hammer ons & pull offs to get the sound, or use very little picking like he's doing in this video. Tapping involved using both hands, primarily with the right hand higher up on the fret board than the left hand.

Yes they are, but at times it seems he is playing second banana to Phil. He is in something of a Scott Gorham type role as "second lead guitarist" which is a role that allows Scott to shine, but if you look at Vivs lead playing in Dio, when he was sole guitarist it seemed, to me anyway, far more free, and more inspired. Just my opinion, obviously as a big DL fan your opinion may be different. I am a fan of Steve Clark by the way, my all time favourite of that band. I love their earlier stuff.
