Is metering necessary? I'm in school and I believe they haven't mentioned to turn this option on in my camera. Doesn't this metering work like the exposure compensation button?

If I am metering for a bride's white dress, and I'm told I, therefore, must add fill light to her face (flash), won't the flash change the metering reading and overexpose the dress?
