you know, I watched your video a while back, then actually took some classes in college which went smoothly for me, thanks. It sure is nice to reflect back on a video to catch the little details that may be overlooked. For example, multi coat application is far better than one thick coat. I learned the hard way as I was put on a "Bondo" job. Tried to say filler they were like we only use bondo and walked away. They had evercoat. go figure.
@invisible634 I am glad you find these videos useful. I also agree, it is good to refresh often, as we all learn more. Learning never stops...Thanks for watching!
I would go ahead and sand them out. If you hit bare plastic, remember to spray plastic adhesion promoter before applying primer. At the store you buy your products from, ask them about it. Every paint brand is a little different.
Hey mate i just sanded my bumper and have alot of chips in the paint from stones, would i just bog over all the chips to try smooth out or would putty be better 4 bumper? cheers
@budzag I would go ahead and sand them out. If you hit bare plastic, remember to spray plastic adhesion promoter before applying primer. At the store you buy your products from, ask them about it. Every paint brand is a little different.
@wyatt3flip I would try to get it within 1/4 of an inch. However, if you can't, you don't want to overwork the metal. You may consider applying the first coat with fiberglass filler that comes in a can.
Why would you apply filler directly to bare metal? I always thought the metal underneath the filler is going to rust causing the filler to crack and ruin the paint.
I've seen a lot of older repairs on cars that had cracked filler/paint so something went wrong.
@MrZdvy Body filler is designed to be applied on bare steel. I have seen what you are talking about too. This is probably due to the filler being too thick, the metal started rusting before the filler was applied, or improperly mixed filler. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have other questions.
@alpinelover7170 No, you do not want to apply etch primer before the filler. You can apply body filler straight to the bare metal. The only primer that body filler can be applied over is epoxy primer. I have always just applied it to bare metal.
can body filler be used on plastics such as bumper lips - polyurathane? i have some pretty deepish scratches that need filler but it still has the paint on it, does the paint have to be removed to apply filler? Dont know how to get that paint out its on a bad curve and too much sanding will ruin the shape.
@eric31291 I would not use body filler on plastic. I would use plastic repair adhesive or a flexible parts putty for a scratch. If the scratch is down to raw plastic, it may need a thin coat of adhesion promoter before applying the material. Thanks for watching.
No you can't. Putting it over another paint will overlay across the paint causing corrosion and bubbling. So be sure to sand down and clean the surface before application. You can do it with paint on but in the long track it will show up.
@jvisaplayer831 No, you apply body filler straight over body filler. The only thing you want to do is sand between coats. Be sure to sand the low areas as well to rough it up before applying another layer. Thanks for watching!

@Bertziethegreat I am not a big fan of using an orbital sander on body filler. It tends to round the filler instead of level it. I would use hand or straight line sanders.

hey i got a question why does my bodyfiller show when i primer it but it looks straight and feels smooth its looks as of it a high spot can u tell me hoto fix that
@romannaputi the key is to cross sand when block sanding. sand in one direction, than the other. This will help level. You may be using too fine of sandpaper. Use 80 grit until level before smoothing with finer grit. Lastly, you may try using a rag to feel the surface. This may help you feel highs and lows better. Oh, don't forget to use guide coat either.
My truck has cracked paint through 50% of the body.Is there any other solution than to cout it down to bare metal and start fresh?I started with the rear fender and had no idea how time consumng it would be.
I've poured some Acetone in a can of body filler that was almost completely hardened and mixed it, it got loose to its original constancy and worked just fine soon after.
Wow how long you been doing auto body repairs...I mean teaching ...those that 'can' do ,those that can't teach....BTW plastic honey is made to thin polyester based auto body fillers [bondo]
