This film is based on a great book of a polish writer - Stanisław Lem, that has the same title. It's always like that - first there is a genius writer and his book and than more famous but less genius director and his film :) =)
A good example of a remake surpassing the original. Much like Vanilla Sky, this version is far superior to it's predecessor. This version deserves a much wider audience. Wonderfully done. One of Clooney's best.
@pizzaisfuntoeat NONONO, i use to say that too, but the problem is, we are thinking they are the same movies but no, in this piece the director aproach it from a different point of view, have you read the book? the original solaris is also different from the original book. The book was faaaaar better, there you really understood Solaris...
True love through true chemistry - the greatest force in the Universe. For two human beings to find each other through billions of years of time, and trillions of light years of space in the Universe, to each be born and to find each other at that specific moment in space and time, on such a magnificent massive planet - - that is your soul mate - your reason to exist. And losing that is the most devastating event a person can endure. But hold them in your heart, they're with you forever.
@CalmCaterpillar I know that. But how do you know he is not Solaris? How do you know he isn't already dead? How do you know if any of us are not part of Solaris? What makes a reality more real than a dream? If you dream of someone, do they still exist? If all of reality is electrical signals interpreted by the brain, than aren't memories reality? My point is (and the point of the movie) is that love transcends reality. Pretty cool huh!
I felt myself being drawn in by this film, culmination of music and cinematography melting together........along with brilliant character portrayals omg just amazes me......
@Gernold1988: Planets like Solaris do exist. We have one right in our own Solar System Neptune read up on it's Astrological value. Every planet has. Psychological value. It's apart of intelligent design. Of all the solar systems scientist have found none have been found like ours. We're here on purpose by the Creator and Earth is the only place in the Universe were Spirit Soul & Matter exist together. Welcome to Earth University training ground for Heaven.
Dlatego zawsze uważałem Stanisława Lema za idealnego pisarza SF.Doceniany za życia ,doceniony po śmierci.Uważam ,że związek ,dramatyczny związek wpleciony w fabułę książki i filmów jest ich esencją
It's a shame that several people have not been able to understand this great film. Natascha McElhone is a terrific actress and Clooney proved to be capable of portraying human beings better than many of his high-profile drama comrades.
This is one my favourite "serious" films.
I read the book after having watched the film and I couldn't enjoyed it as much because it's too technical and derivative for its own sake as it certainly fits the Western-European philosophy of dehumanization of then.
@Voyksed since they were so close to solaris, the energies of the planet brought her back to life, so when george clooney died at the end, the image of them in their apartment together was them existing on solaris, in a completely different form, but interpreted by both as being on earth as normal...
im not religious, but solaris could be defined, as both god and heaven... in a way...
I've seen the movie over 20 times and it's my favorite,
However, the worse part of the film for me was the end when Chris met up with the real Rheya, I felt it did nothing to the movie. In reality, shit happens, what I liked about the movie was the study of the different ways us humans can react to the events that Solaris was causing.
Like the quote said "There are no answers, only choices"
"real Rheya" ...Either I'm misunderstanding your characterization here, or you missed something crucial in 20 viewings, something directly relevant to the quote in your comment.
Hold on, are you implying that we aren't suppose to know who or what the lady who 'looks' like Rheya is, because the director wants to leave us with the question of who it was?
Hallucinating? I guess you haven't watched the movie.. They talk about that in the movie and I very much doubt the director wanted the audience to think it could be hallucinations.
Don't blow it. You start. I did. Ok. I'm going to resist the impulse to ask you about the doorknob. Do you always resist your impulses? Not always... Try poetry. And death shall have no dominion. Hmm. Thomas. Its not a very happy poem though. Well you didn't seem very happy when I saw you on the train. I wasn't. And tonight? Its early...

Reminds me how much I love this film and its soundtrack.
Would anybody be interested in the digital press kit for this film that was sent to newspapers? I have the CD laying around somewhere and it has a bunch of high-res photos from the film/set and more.
I also liked the scene when Gibarian shows up in his dream and talks about them being like puppets. It's so gotten to me that for a few days I was thinking what to make of it.
Hi, coincidentally I have just uploaded the same sequence, only a bit longer. I hadn't see it before. It seems we like that same moment. I couldn't cut it shorter so good it was.
