@AnimeFreak9684 I think it usually hurts, but in varying degrees. This guy was amazing. I wish we could have him each time. I think it depends a lot on the phlebotomist and just how it's placed sometimes. I get a lot of blood draws too. Ask for the butterfly needle! It takes longer to do the draw, but it's a smaller needle. They always roll their eyes when I ask for it for me. Good luck. It's mostly just the first pinch. If they do it fast, it's usually best. :)
@Mariamparker It may be because of my size, but the bigger the better. They can tell when they're palpating whether the vein is likely to roll. (I've had enough experience with needles...)
I just got about 17 blood tests done today about an hour and a half ago so now I'm watching people get their's done. :D That was the most I ever had. I hope I never have anymore than that. :<
Caleb is very brave, but the fact remains. There is a way to get around the pain. Or at least reduce it. The medical people should use a topical anesthetic as much as possible. Especially with kids & infants. 50 to 100 years ago, that was impossible. Now, it's not.
I liked the tech's distraction technique. If that was me sitting in the chair for my blood test, I talked to her and I got one of those cool bandaids.
I'm one of those big patients that gets antsy. I'll take my free hand and do all sorts of things with it... over the mouth, over the eyes... and I do NOT look...
When they're doing TDM (I take Depakote and Synthroid) they usually do four tubes. I watch them switch tubes out of the corner of my eye and count them off. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center phlebotomists are used to hearing me asking how it's going. If they would take me for platelets they have a screen on the machine.
@lifesaver173 Gave blood Saturday. They took 450 mL in a plastic bag, one red tube (so they could get clotted serum), and three lavender (anticoagulated) tubes.
Awesome job Caleb! I always watch too! I'm in nursing school and even though I get to do the sticking now, I still have to get stuck! You are such an inspiration! I recently went through another rebellous "I don't want to be diabetic anymore" phase but you give me the strength to keep fighting and get my a1c back down!! Thanks Caleb!
This video needs to be shown to Lab Technicians BEFORE they graduate. This young man had great bed side manners, talked to Caleb like he was an Adult. Heck, he even did a high five while drawing blood. Most techs go in, tell the kid not to look, have that "get in and get outta here" attitude. The fact Caleb said "Thank you" speaks volumes. Amazing child, great attitude.
That was awesome! Caleb rocks!! The phlebotomist was great at keeping a little conversation going "what kinda video games do you like to play?" Just when Caleb was thinking it hurt, the guy would get him to talk/distract him--great job!
@singtheirelegy3 My last phlebotomist had the hots for my sneakers. On the other hand, you don't see metallic silver/red/black Nike high-tops every day. (I didn't comment about his black Shox but I did notice them.)
He is so cute!:) poor thing. it's never fun to get bloodwork. I have to get my blood work done a lot too cause of my celiac. He's brave, including with the diabetes!:) Feel better!:) Good job!:)
just did this today! checking for thyroid problems :( how long has he been on the omnipod? im looking at getting my first pump (im 15). right now were leaning towards the OneTouch ping.
Caleb- you remind me a lot of myself when I was your age.. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 3 and they used to have to draw blood to check my a1c (haha that rhymes). I still have the yearly blood tests. You are really brave and did an awesome job. Same with taking care of your diabetes. It's really inspiring to me, and I am 17 years old. Good habits now will keep you healthy later if you continue the way you do in your videos with checking your blood sugar and listening to your mom.
Wow what a brave little boy! I am 28 and I am TERRIFIED of getting needles. Been known to go down a few times. I'm just looking at blood draw vids to try to desensitize myself to it and I came across this. Great job kiddo!
you are a brave kid..that made the hair stand up on my neck..ive been doing this for 32 years and i found looking at it beats the fear.. well done Celeb
you are so brave, especially to watch the needle poking your arm so intensely... these kind of blood draw "sticks are so different than the arm/finger "sticks" you obviously do many times a day... Congratulations! This is something so many kids need to see; your bravery in the face of a painful, and traumatizing procedure...
I passed your comments along to Caleb - you made him smile. I'll have to remind him the next time we go how his bravery was a great example. It might help it go smoothly again! Thanks for your kind words!
And he's how old? awesome, young man... I get allergy shots every few weeks, can't stand them; though they help... The lab tech is right, he did/does a lot better than many adults who have blood drawn! (a round of applause for Caleb!)
I have to get one on Tuesday and I'm eleven. Does it hurt or am I over exaggerating?
